AREA OF APPLICATION

This Technical Information applies in respect of the assessment of the visual quality of laminated safety glass with a digitally printed interlayer. The guidelines are applicable to all products manufactured within the factories of FLACHGLAS Wernberg GmbH. Tolerance levels and requirements as set out in the guidelines are applicable, in particular, in instances in which no special arrangements (drawings, technical regulations for delivery etc.) have been made between the customer and FLACHGLAS Wernberg GmbH. Where insulation glass is being used, the panes of glass should be assessed separately in respect of their specified characteristics.

PROCESS

SIGLA® Motive (SentryGlas

® Expressions

TM) is a type of laminated safety glass that conforms to DIN EN ISO

12543, with a PVB interlayer containing a digitally printed photograph (up to 1440 dpi). The colours and the interlayer are coordinated in such a manner as to permit all of the safety features of the glass to remain fully intact. Motifs may be made available as a graphics file (MAC/PC), slide or original, either in colour or black/white. Various different coloured interlayers are available as a background; when combined with toughened safety glass or heat strengthened glass and additional screen printing, we can also offer numerous extra colours from the RAL-, NCS- or Pantone range. We can also print the motif colour “white”. The quality of results is impressive. Our close links to our graphic designers ensure that customers’ wishes are fulfilled in an optimal way. Test samples should always be drawn up for comparison purposes. SIGLA

® Motive is suitable for indoor and outdoor use and in insulated glass, and can be combined with many

other basic types of glass. Weathering tests show good colour stability and brilliance of images. The maximum dimensions for one motif unit are approx. 2.390 mm x 4.270 mm.

1 A large format poster, for

instance, can be made up of many small individual motifs to form one overall image. We can, on request, edit individual images of this kind graphically (tiling) so as to achieve the best possible fit. The strength of the glass depends on structural requirements.

1 Longer motifs can be arranged by special agreement.

SPECIFICATIONS RELATING TO FEASIBILITY TESTING

The following information is necessary in order for us to be able to advise on the feasibility of any method of digital printing: • Description of the object • Total m² • Number of panes of glass - units • Where the glass is to be installed (outdoors or indoors, backlighting, bonding, framing) • All pane measurements (template panes) Formscheiben) and methods of treatment (edge grinding, drill

holes) • Number of designs • Draft design (image/drawing: .jpg, .tiff, .eps, .ai format) • Colour systems (RAL, RAL design, NCS, Pantone) – It is possible to deliver a proof. • Overall view of the object (necessary for tiling jobs) • How will designs be made available? (CD/DVD, server download, e-mail)

REQUIREMENTS IN RESPECT OF THE GRAPHIC MATERIAL

Artwork All artwork provided to us for processing should have already been optimised in respect of dimensions, resolution and colouring, or else a charge will be levied for any graphic image editing required. We ask that you speak to our preliminary print department prior to drawing up any new artwork. Original artwork of images or paintings should be photographed digitally or scanned in with a high resolution, as well as being colour corrected.

COLOUR SAMPLES

We recommend that you send us an original colour sample or a proof. Please ensure that all colours are specified. Please consult our pre-press department in advance. A sample is necessary compelling for the testing and release of the imprinting. The original print-file is neces-sary for the production of this sample.

FILE FORMATS

Alle Spezialzeichensätze müssen eingebunden sein: Adobe Photoshop (MAC/PC) EPS, TIFF Adobe Illustrator

2 (MAC/PC) AI, EPS (with fonts included)

Adobe Freehand (MAC/PC) editable EPS Data provision CD, DVD, BD (MAC/ PC) USB stick, external hard drive http/FTP uploadable or downloadable from our server or homepage E-mail attachments up to 10 MB

SCALING AND IMAGE RESOLUTION

The files should be created as vector or image files. Vector files can be scaled down (e.g. 1:10), for image files scaling of 1:1 and a resolution of at least 150 dpi are needed. Please consult our pre-press department before creating the files.

IMAGE WALLS

Large image walls

Large image walls are made by breaking up the image into smaller sections. Please take into account the grooves required between the panes of glass so as to avoid glass to glass contact.

DEGREES OF TRANSPARENCY AND MAXIMUM SIZE OF INTERLAYERS

1. Clear The same3 motif on both sides, colours not opaque (TL = 55 – 60%).

The individual finished image must not exceed 2.390 x 4.270 mm². (Panes of glass up to a length of 5.800 mm available on request.)

2. Soft white Contours are still visible in the background. Light transmission approx. 80%. The

reverse side appears diffuse. 3. Translucent white Contours are no longer visible. Light transmission approx. 60%. The reverse side

appears to be matt white. 4. Coconut white Contours usually no longer visible. Light transmission approx. (indoor use only!) 30%. It is possible to have different motifs on each side. The individual finished print, using either matt foil or extensive monocolours, cannot be larger than 1.800 x 3.800 mm² or 2.300 x 3.500 mm² (manufacture by means of a rubber ink sack). Larger panes of glass are available on request.

DEGREES OF TRANSPARENCY OF COLOURS

The hiding power of our colours is between 40% and 45%. This equates to a transparency of approx. 55% to 60%.

COLOUR IMPRESSION

Extensive monocolour prints may experience localised clouding caused by pigmentation shifts. This may be visible in certain situations depending on where the glass is installed (overhead or backlit, etc.), however this does not constitute a reason for making a customer complaint.

COLOURFASTNESS

Tests have shown that our products are very colourfast and resistant to fading (light fast). Colourfastness and “light fastness” are expressions used by the printing industry to describe how images may “fade”. The main causes of “fading” are light, moisture and air pollution such as smoke, ozone etc. SIGLA

® Motive is a type of laminated safety glass with a printed PVB interlayer. Colours are therefore protected

from moisture and air pollution. In addition, the PVB interlayer itself protects colours from UV rays. The special colour pigments are so stable in themselves that they are even used in paints in the architecture and automobile fields on surfaces that will be exposed to the elements. In order to test their colourfastness, SIGLA

® Motive glass planes were placed in a special piece of equipment

that powerfully concentrates the sunlight. The Arizona desert (USA) was chosen as a test environment because it displays extreme climate conditions. Until this day this continuous test has achieved a lightfastness equivalent to 10 years (this does not, however, apply to the colour “white”). Test conditions Source of light: concentrated sunlight, Arizona desert (USA) Test norm: ASTM G90 cycle Fading criterion: ∆E calculated using the CMC

4 (1:1) formula

Test results: < 5 ∆E for a 10-year period Test results show that pigments tend only to fade slightly; further, an ordinary observer, without comparing it side by side with the reference sample that has not been subjected to the elements, will not notice any fading. Resistance to light Test carried out in Arizona desert (USA)

COMBINATION OPTIONS / TYPES OF GLASS

All types of glass and combinations thereof are possible, provided they can be used for SIGLA® laminated safe-

ty glass or SIGLA® made from DELODUR

® toughened safety glass.

The glass edges must be protected from: o Permanent moisture and dirt o Incompatible materials (i.e. sealing materials should be agreed with the sealant supplier)

We recommend the use of glass that is low in iron, such as Pilkington Optiwhite

TM, in order to guarantee

optimum colour reproduction.

INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS

The printed interlayer should be inspected in relation to flaws and colour by observing the print from the side from which it will be viewed. If there are specific guidelines for installation, it is imperative that these be noted on the purchase order. Inspections should be carried out from a distance of approx. 3 m through reflection under diffuse daylight conditions without direct sunlight or backlighting. Panes of glass which are intended for use in an area that is to remain see-through should be inspected from both sides under the aforementioned inspection conditions. Use for this purpose, however, must be agreed with FLACHGLAS Wernberg GmbH in advance and specified at the time the order is placed.

QUALITY FEATURES

The visual quality of the glass should be inspected from a distance of 3 m. Flaws that are not discernible from

this distance will not be noted. The inspection must not place any emphasis on complaints.

Dot shaped features ∅ < 0.5 mm will not be noted

∅ 0.5 – 1.0 mm max. of 3 per m²

at a distance of ≥ 100 mm

∅ 1.0 – 3.0 mm max. of 2 per glass pane Burnt-in foreign bodies permissible up to a length of 10 mm (fluff, hair etc.) (max. width of 0.5 mm) Seamed edges 3 mm all around all printing defects and Indentations in the foil

are permissible

Polished/smoothened edges Indentations in the foil of no more than 2 mm are permissible.

Patterns visible within the print Slight streaks when looking through the glass are

permissible.

TOLERANCES

o Non-alignment of the glass with SIGLA® Motive 2 mm

consisting of 2 x toughened safety glass or 2 x laminated safety glass: (Any finishing that needs to be carried out in relation to edges can only be carried out on the individual panes of glass).

o Location tolerances in relation to the design within the pane of glass: +/- 3 mm

o Colour tolerances: there may be some deviances in colour, particularly in relation to extensive

monocolour prints, up to ∆E ≤ 5 (when compared with sample panes of glass, and within manufactured panes of glass which make up an object).

o Non-parallelism: a non-parallelism of up to 2 mm is permissible for all types of edge finish

o Fitting tolerance when “tiling” (motif crosses over from one pane to the next): 0,35 %

~ 3,5 Running metres

Fitting tolerance

The “Guidelines for the assessment of visual quality for the construction industry” are applicable, particularly with regard to backlit motifs, as are the glass tolerance levels as applicable to SIGLA
