The aim is to conveniently enable passengers to simply use a single eTicket for buses, trains and other public transport facilities throughout the country. A passenger can simply hop on and ride without thinking about the service provider or tariff systems. But a system that is extremely convenient for public transport users requires clever technology in the background. Here, sensitive per-sonal usage data must be reliably recorded and safely processed. All companies involved must be secure in the knowledge that their services are precisely determined and invoiced. To do this, a wide-range of requirements must be taken into account in detail, from cash-free payments via eTicket and tariff systems, a range of role models and usage types, different requirements from in-dividual companies and transport authorities and to data protection for passengers and companies.

The dream of an interoperable electronic fare management (EFM) system is becom-ing reality. In 2006, the basis for a uniform eTicket for the whole of Germany was im-plemented with the VDV core application. Since then it has been tested in a number of transport associations. Now work has begun on a country-wide non-proprietary interoperability network (ION) which will launch in 2010. The network must fulfill a wide range of requirements with regard to scalability, data throughput, data pro-tection, security and reliability. highQ has been involved in the development from the very beginning and supplies background systems are convincing in every way.

The opportunities afforded by computer technology must be exploited to the full in order to meet the wide range of require-ments made of interoperable background systems.The most demanding element is, surely, the rapid processing of high volumes of data at peak times of data comparison. Security standards and data protection must not be neglected during this process.And highQ does not allow that to happen. The company considers the guaranteeing of data security and data protection to be one of the primary goals of the software development process. Invoicing is carried out at the end of the day, even in an interoperability network. According to analyses by highQ, extremely high data volumes are to be expected between 2.00 and 4.30 o‘clock. In order to process these volumes it is necessary to implement intelligent and ex-tremely scalable load distribution. After all, we must as-sume that the user figures for the country-wide interop-erability network (ION) will increase rapidly. Accordingly, the service requirements and the data throughput will continue to increase further.

Cloud Computing ensures flexible computing power

In order to be well equipped for these developments, highQ makes use of Cloud Computing for its back-ground systems. This method uses free computing ca-pacities that do not need to be tied to local systems can be expanded constantly. Extensive process model-ling enables the expected loads to be simulated and the systems scaled accordingly. At the end of the day, this makes highQ solutions extremely powerful, flexible and secure. The practicality of this method has already proved itself in many ways.
