During Advent some 27 households volunteered to open a numbered Advent

Window each day. There were some very creative efforts and families had great

fun thinking up ways of decorating their window.

The Post Office kindly offered to give out Advent Maps for a voluntary donation.

A fantastic total of £105.50 was generated for the Foodbank in Beverley.

Thanks to all who took part and to all who generously contributed over the

Christmas Period. The general feeling is that this is worth repeating next year.

Good fun, in a good cause, at Christmas.

11 November 2017- Respect and Remember

The extremely effective and poignant display of handmade waxed poppies was produced by the Fitta Group in Tickton. The display commemorated not only those who served, and made the ultimate sacrifice for this country, but also the 100-year anniversary of women’s direct involvement in the armed services. The poppies were made by attaching crepe paper petals to wire and dipping them in melted candle wax.

EDITORIAL AND THANK YOU

Tickton Diary was launched by the church under the previous editor, Richard Powell, in December 1989. During that time, almost 30 years, the Diary has been a great vehicle for news, services and celebration within the village. I would like to personally thank Richard for all his hard work over the many years. I know that many people in Tickton also greatly appreciate his efforts on behalf of both the church and wider village community. Thank you, Richard.

TICKTON DIARY - THE FUTURE: Having never done anything like this before, producing Tickton Diary will take me well outside my comfort zone. I aim to produce a high-quality publication that is of interest to everyone in Tickton. However, the Diary can only be as good as the quality of the village news and adverts it carries, so I will be relying on members of the community to provide the articles that are of interest to the wider village. The Diary should provide a valuable link between the different generations with news about Tickton School and the myriad of organisations within the village. Celebrating achievements of the village from the very young to the not so young and promoting village events will be strong emphases, as will be village issues and developments. Anyone with ideas about future articles should make contact at;

BEST WISHES FROM THE FORMER EDITOR

I am overjoyed that Jon has picked up the job of keeping Tickton Diary ‘on the streets’.

Many people have said to me since I retired from the job in the early autumn that it would be a great shame if the village lost its own regular periodical, and it’s great that this is not going to happen. Many, I hope, will be pleased, not least the many advertisers who have supported TD over the years, and the regular contributors who keep their groups ‘in the public eye’ through its pages.

So, please continue supporting the Diary, and thanks Jon, and best wishes to you and everyone involved from now onwards.

Richard Powell Editor of Tickton Diary, 1989 to 2017.

Dear Friends,

I am a new boy in the community. “Boy” is stretching it just a bit, given that I am a couple of days short of my Biblically allotted “three score years and ten”, but then I don’t feel that much different from when I was a lad. Admittedly, the joints creak a bit and I am, unfairly I think, accused by some of dithering. I run more slowly and I have promised my wife (actually myself first) that I shan’t tackle any more marathons, only half-marathons. From the beginning of September 2017, as a Methodist minister, I have shared in the care of souls of the Church in Tickton. I have already met quite a few people in the village and look forward to making the acquaintance of more of you and sharing stories with you.

We live our lives in and as stories, some factual, others happy or unhappy figments of our imaginations, but, each in their own way, true. Certainly, each life-story is valid and it is through respectfully sharing our stories that we become community. I believe that it is being able to share stories that makes us human beings. As a start here is part of my story and hopefully proof that I am human!

I was born in Johannesburg in the same year that the Nationalist Party came into power. So, from my birth the Colossus of apartheid bestrode my life. Implicit and explicit indoctrination resulted in an unquestioning acceptance of its validity until my late teens. The indoctrination wasn’t much tempered by spending ten of my formative years in the then colony of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Through encounters with people of different races at university and in a banned Christian movement the realisation dawned on me of what an abomination the system of apartheid was. From my experiences generally, through my concern for social justice and the transition of South Africa to a democratic system of government I have been humbled by being able to share in many personal stories of triumph, tragedy, sorrow and joy.

My love story is one which involves a happy marriage of forty-seven years to Ailsa which has resulted in four sons and daughters-in-law and six grandchildren; the families spread around the world in Beverley, France, United States and Mexico. Together and separately we have camped, hiked, sailed and shared many hours of fun and mischief around campfires and barbecues (well, actually, as South Africans they’re braai’s) in all these countries. This story is brightly coloured and invigorated by the revelation to me at the age of forty that I, alone of my four siblings, had been adopted as a baby. The subsequent journey of discovery of my Irish roots, wonderful encounter in America with my birthmother after six years of searching and the continuing engagement after her death with my large extended Irish family has been both terrifying and exciting.

My spiritual story involves a Damascus-like experience in my late teens followed later by a desert of unbelief and confusion, eventual re-engagement with the Divine, entry into ministry and presently embraces living with the mystery of unanswerable questions, particularly since a diagnosis of multiple myeloma in 2013. I have found that there is nothing quite like a face-to-face encounter with our mortality to cause us to review the priorities of occupy our lives. As a minister, I have met and engaged with a vast range of people and count myself very privileged to have been able to share in the stories of great courage and sacrifice of people of different races and classes, most of which have been inspirational and humbling. More stories are yet to unfold and I look forward to their opening as we get to know each other.

Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in everything That's how the light gets in.

Pleased to meet you, Leonard Cohen

The Church in Tickton – Church News… In the last 12 months, our church and village has seen a complete change of clergy. We’ve lost Jeremy, the Vicar, who moved on to Hampstead in London in March, and then Gareth, our Curate, moved to be Vicar of a benefice (four churches) in rural south Lincolnshire. Meanwhile, Methodist minister Revd Peter Clark arrived in September to fill the post left vacant since 2016 when Ray Coates retired, and then in early December Revd Jonathan Baker became Vicar of the Beverley Minster benefice, including Tickton and Routh. We know that both Peter and Jonathan have already met quite a few people in our village and hope both they and us will enjoy working with them over the next few years.

Also joining us in September as Children’s and Families Worker was Karen Eyre, and she has already become a regular presence at Tickton School, with a lunchtime club (the Incredibles), and at Youth Kaf. Welcome Peter, Jonathan and Karen.

Then in October, we had a special service at St Paul’s, led by Peter, to celebrate the completion of the development project, which as many will know, incorporated the building of a toilet and kitchen, and also the provision of a level, accessible entrance and brand-new doors. The church now looks good, and the antique fittings on the new outside door, with due thanks to John Morris and Harry Norman, and Brian Fell, the contractor, look absolutely splendid.

So to Christmas with our Carol Service in St Paul’s, carol singing in the pub and the Christingle Service at the Methodist Church all very well supported with substantial charity collections we make at these events going to Action for Children, the Children’s Society, and Crisis, the Christmas homelessness organisation. Thank you to all who supported these events.

We’re now looking forward to Lent and Easter. Karen is organising an Easter Tree festival, mainly involving children and with help from the school. This will involve a display of small, decorated trees in St Paul’s for two weeks from Wednesday 21st March to Monday 2nd April, during which time the church will be open during the day, with refreshments available some of the time. More details via the notice boards and our website and the school newsletter in due course.

You can keep up to date with what the church in doing via our website where you will find details of planned events etc., and you can download the current weekly notice sheet, which give details of our Sunday services and events both here in Tickton and at our partner churches in Beverley.

Tickton and Weel Neighbourhood Watch… Tickton and Weel Neighbourhood Watch Group is active here. It is the largest geographical neighbourhood watch group in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The aim of neighbourhood Watch Groups are:

▪ Reduce crime and the opportunities for crime. ▪ Help and reassure those who live in fear of crime. ▪ Encourage communities to work closer together with local Police and Authorities. ▪ Encourage community spirit

Alongside your Parish Council and the local Police, East Riding Council Services, Fire and Rescue we actively pursue these goals. Often in the background we do so, not for personal glory but for a safer community. We cannot deal with crime reports but can collect information, this background information may be useful to the local officers/PCSOs that cover our area. We work with the ‘services’ to enhance the protection of our communities. Challenges in Policing and local services mean that it is essential to share information with other groups locally. We provide advice on campaigns, sometimes around specific crime or recovery initiatives. We are currently looking for a contact in Esk (vacancy). If you are interested please contact us. Try www.immobilise.com – a national registry of property, which has a proven track record of returning property to their rightful owners. Used by Police nationally. Local Police advice: Lock it or lose it!

• keep doors locked even if you’re at home,

• leave lights on timers so it appears someone is home,

• don’t leave valuables on display,

• don’t leave garage doors open so would be thieves can see your items, Statistically speaking this is a very low crime area, but do not be complacent.

- Look after your things before someone else does.

If you live here (Tickton, Weel and in between) you are a member, you may even get reductions on insurance. There are other schemes locally, Farmwatch, Riverwatch and Routh NWG. Email: [email protected]

We should capitalise on this as a community and come together to celebrate by planning a weekend of village activities and events for everyone to enjoy. Can any of you think of activities etc. we could do? Can we decorate bikes? Have a cake sale, table top sale, treasure hunt etc……. Any ideas please do share. Come on all you community groups organise your event and let’s make a weekend of fun and community spirit for everyone. Please let me know your suggestions and let’s organise a celebration. My phone number is: Nikki 01964 501990.

Tour De Yorkshire Comes to Tickton...Appeal… …

On Thursday 3rd May 2018 we will have the opportunity to see the men’s race here at Tickton. The opening ceremony will take place in Beverley town centre and then the men will race towards us as they head to Hornsea, go around the mere and then return via the A165 and back past Tickton and Routh on A1035 before heading off through Beverley and up into North Yorkshire. What an opportunity!

A New Garden Pavilion The gardens at Tickton Grange are very special for us. Happy

family memories, and lots of memories of times spent with

our guests too. After much deliberating, we decided that the

bottom lawn would look pretty stunning with an outside

structure, so work began into researching what the original

Georgian owners might have envisaged. A folly perhaps, or

Here is a photographic

artist’s impression of our soon to be Georgian Garden Pavilion. We hope

you will like it.

something akin to a bandstand or even a cricket

pavilion? No, it had to be stone and reflect the

gorgeous Georgian home that we are lucky enough

to have. So, where do we source something

suitable? Strangely enough, after plenty of ‘surfing

the Internet’ (isn’t it amazing), our journey took us

to a company just outside Northampton where we

grew up. More interestingly, we all remember as

children the excitement when we headed off with

our parents to Haddonstone to pick up various stone

urns and features for the garden at our childhood

home, Hillcrest Rising.

So, it seemed very appropriate that the stone

pavilion offered by Haddonstone was the one that,

we felt, architecturally fitted the bill for us here at

Tickton Grange. The phone call was made. The

gentleman who answered the phone was full of chat

about his wife who, it transpires, had gone to Notre

Dame High School in Northampton with Debbie

and Helen Whymant. Small world isn’t it!

The spec for the Garden Pavilion arrived, Andrew

Turner and his great team of builders did plenty of

head scratching, planning permission was obtained,

and in a couple of weeks time work will begin on

laying the base and erecting our very special garden

space. Our aim is to offer it for outdoor wedding

ceremonies, but we also hope that guests will enjoy

simply sitting in it and enjoying the peace, the birds

and the gardens - no doubt to be joined by Bert the

dog on occasion too!

Have a wander down if you are passing to see how

we are progressing...

Everyone who lives in our Parish will agree we are so lucky to live in such a nice place, however I think most of us would agree that the state of our pavements in Tickton are particularly horrible with Dog Mess. Many residents have complained about individuals treading in it, children on their way to school, adults walking down the street, dog mess on people’s flower beds and borders and I have even moved some from right outside someone’s front door! Other concerns raised have included dogs being allowed out to simply roam, children/teenagers walking the family pet and making no attempt to clean up. What is going on? Does nobody care? I disagree, many of us care but feel helpless to resolve the situation. What has been done? During 2017, the Parish Council installed two dispensers for waste bags for our residents to use when they forget their own bags. They are situated around both bus shelters. No excuse! We have also over recent years increased the bins within the village to accommodate where people walk their dogs to stop people throwing the bags into the hedgerows. We do listen and respond and thank everyone who picks up their dog’s mess and bins it appropriately. The Parish Council met with the Dog Warden during Autumn last year and discussed the concerns raised by residents. Generally, residents are reluctant to report others because they don’t want to be given a reputation or fear reprisal. We can understand this. So how do we tackle this issue that is so close to many of our hearts? What can we do? The Parish Council have agreed to take reports from residents and pass these onto the Dog Warden anonymously if there is certain information included such as a description of the dog and/or owner, possible names and addresses, or a pattern of behaviour such as ‘Everyday at 3pm’ or every Saturday afternoon between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. The Dog Warden can then act. The Dog Warden won’t necessarily begin with court proceedings or criminalising individuals, but may write to them, pointing out their behaviour or may pay the accused a visit. They will also then know when to visit the village and where about they need to be if they are to catch people ‘red-handed’. The person concerned, may not know they have been caught by a tip-off so reprisals shouldn’t be an issue. The Parish Council can then also monitor the situation and identify ‘hot spots’ too. It would be lovely if we can work together as a community to eradicate this anti-social behaviour. The law is clear and people flouting this should be taken to task. Let’s reclaim our village and put and end to dirty, unsightly pavements, gardens and green areas. G L Cullington Field Refurbishment…

A new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) has opened in Tickton, after the Parish Council allocated £10,000 own funds and received over £25,000 of grant funding towards this community project. The MUGA replaces the existing tennis courts and will offer activities including tennis courts and a 5 A-Side football pitch. The adjoining MUGA offers football and basketball for the local community, and will be available for people to access all year round. The MUGA will be officially opened in Spring 2018 and dates will be advertised on the Parish Council Noticeboards and website www.ticktonandrouth.org.uk Following consultations with local residents in 2016, the report identified the need for Tickton & Routh Parish Council to refurbish the tennis courts to incorporate a multi-use games area (MUGA) to support several sports on the same surface to meet and benefit the needs of users. The development work would transform them into the community amenity that they once were. The first stage included the installation of land drainage, this was completed by the Parish Council in 2016. Early 2017, the Tickton & Routh Parish Council Grant Committee commenced the process of securing funds to complete the tennis court refurbishments. Approval for grant funding was received from the following providers;

• £2,000.00 – East Riding of Yorkshire Sport, Play & Arts “Active Creative” Grant

• £17,840.00 – Routh Wind Farm Community Fund

• £5,691.30 – 4GoodFund

Tickton & Routh Parish Council is extremely grateful for the generous contributions made by each fund provider. Without this funding, the much-needed facility would not be available for the benefit of the community. The courts will offer flexibility for a range of games potential users want to play. Use of the facilities by the public, clubs and schools can only improve health and wellbeing and facilitate social support and cohesion in the community. It will offer the opportunity for all to learn new skills and has the potential to nurture new talent. Tickton & Routh Parish Councils Chairman, Cllr Howard Sinkler, said: “This is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when we work together with local communities. The new area is a fantastic asset for Tickton and will make a real difference to the lives of local people.” The new facilities belong to you all, and with a little care, will last for many years to come. During the winter months, the tennis nets and posts may be stored to enable the courts to be used for other sports. Please do not hesitate to contact the Clerk to arrange for stored equipment to be set up. Michelle can be contacted on Mobile No. 07563 155095 or Email [email protected]

Parish Council News…

Anaerobic Digester on the Leven bypass An update: The planning application for the Anaerobic Digester on the Leven bypass has now gone to appeal. This is the first planning application from around a year ago. This was rejected on visual impact and you may remember this was due to stand at the height of three double decker busses. (The second application was rejected on the grounds of visual impact and public amenity late last year). Our Parish Council, and those of the adjoining villages have requested that the appeal is heard by public enquiry. This gives all those interested the opportunity to become involved and voice their opinions for and against. This request was made because of the sheer weight of numbers of residents opposed to the plans (over a thousand were received by ERYC). In the meantime, the land involved has had an incredible discovery made on it in the form of Catwick Henge. This was a wooden structure of considerable size, dating back at least 4,000 years ago in the late Neolithic to Bronze Age. It is the only one ever found in East Yorkshire. Currently the archaeological teams are working on the site to catalogue it all before it is gone forever becoming an extension to a gravel pit. Tickton Bowls Club…

Happy new year from the Bowls Club.

We play in the village hall Mondays and Thursday evenings at 7pm. We are still busy playing our competitions. Monday evening is the open pairs league playing for the chairmanship cup. It finishes in February 2018.

The draw triples which is for the Jean Dean Trophy has just finished and the results of all the competition will be at the end of the season. The Humberside League (Tornadoes and the Titans) which are played in Division Two North are still ongoing. We have had some sad news to start the new year. Mr Alan Howbridge who was a founder member of the bowls club safely died aged 93, he was a lovely gentleman and thinking of his family at this sad time. Well that's all for now Happy bowling

We enjoyed a good year of golf at some of the region’s finest courses, as reported by Captain

Chris Reeves at our annual meeting on 17th January at The New Inn, and are looking forward to

the forthcoming year and some new and some old challenges.

Our schedule will include Skidby, Grimsby, Selby, Cave Castle and Pike Hills so please look out for our dates in Tickton Diary and on Facebook. Captain’s Weekend is hoped to be played at KP Club in August.

At our meeting we decided to forego dinner following our matches, partly to help keep costs down, giving players the opportunity to eat back at The New Inn after prize giving at the venues.

Thanks once again to Bev and Hazel for putting together a very good menu for the meeting and we would like to welcome any new members to swell our ranks and to enjoy our golf days.

In the meantime if any golfers wish to join us please contact Ian McKenzie at [email protected] or 01964501778.

ANNUAL MEETING AND REPORT

It seems such a long time since we last reported for TD but here goes and thanks to Richard and John for all that they have done. I won’t bore you with all of the details of our end of 2017 matches other than to congratulate Captain’s Weekend winner Douggie Lloyd as the first to hold our Les Booker Memorial Trophy at Forest Pines.

Tickton School PFA… A big THANK YOU!

Tickton Primary School PFA would like to thank everyone who supported their Annual Christmas Fair on Saturday 2nd December.

The event was a huge success with more stall holders than in previous years adding to the variety of gifts to purchase as well as the very popular tombola and raffle. Thank you to everyone who kindly donated prizes.

This year, as something different, the Y5 and Y6 children at the school had been asked to design games for the fair and this added to the enjoyment, especially for the children attending. These were very popular and helped contribute to an amazing total of £2000 which was raised by the event.

Special thanks goes to Mrs Ridsdale for providing the festive food and to Father Christmas

Youth Kaf Celebrates Burns Night with a Scottish Evening

Youth Kaf…

From making your own sporran, to haggis tasting, putting the bean bag and even expert tuition in tossing the carpet. Youth Kaf were determined to celebrate Burns Night. Even if it was a day late. Many of the children (and adults) tried the haggis for the first time and most agreed the taste was fine. There was another good response for the Food Bank collection.

Youth Kaf and Friends have raised over 350 items for the East Riding Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. The target for the year is 1,000 items.

This term, Year 5 have been learning about volcanoes. We decided to recreate an eruption of our own using the resources we have in school: salt dough, a plastic bottle, straws, washing up liquid, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, red paint and orange food colouring. The result from the experiment

Volcanoes can be very destructive to the surrounding area and to the people. Though we couldn’t use real trees, people or buildings we used the straws and salt dough to make our own. They were left in shambles after the

main explosion of lava (orange food colouring and red paint) from the crater (the top of the volcano) and the side vents. What an amazing experiment!

Tickton School - Indoor Athletics Stars…

Tickton School Indoor Athletics team came first in their match against a number of other primary schools from Beverley. The competition took place at the High School. The team were a credit to the school and put in some very impressive performances. Well done to all that took part.
