Those who’ve been out in the job world for anumber of years already know certain things:what to wear for different types of job inter-views, how to handle ethics problems on thejob, how to craft a resume that gets responses, and how to handle bosses. Those who are aim-ing for their first business job, especially thoseright out of college, don’t know those thingsyet.

“Business Success in Your 20s and 30s” isone of the “Complete Idiot’s Guide” series.Despite the unfortunate title, the book is wortha look, as it’s loaded with valuable advice. Jobseekers in their 20s embarking on their careersare likely to appreciate the book’s attitude andattention to how-to detail. Thirty-somethingswho haven’t been as successful as they’d hopedwill get something out of it, too.

“Business Success” starts off with the plusesand minuses of being young in the businessworld. It doesn’t pull any punches on the nega-tives, but outlines the steps required to workaround them.

Getting the job is only part of the battle. Do-ing it well is ... work. The book walks first-timemanagers through dealing with difficult subor-dinates, getting respect from superiors, actinglike a manager, becoming confident, dressingfor the part and more.

Appendix A is loaded with resource Web sitesthat pertain to each chapter. The one dealingwith resumes is valuable, as it includes the big-gest Web sites as well as tools for creating aresume. One listed site, www.razume.com, of-fers a resume builder as well as a way for oth-ers to critique resumes before they get sent outinto the world. Appendix B is devoted to the100 best business books of all time. Brokendown into business categories, that list is worththe price of the book itself. Appendix C is fullof sample resumes.

“Business Success” uses the standard extrascommon in the “Idiot’s Guide” series: graphicsand boxes pointing to important information,in this case called Best Practice and Heads Up.

Have a college student about to graduate inthe spring? No matter what the major, he or sheis going to need a job. And “Business Success”can help.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally an-swer reader questions, but will incorporate them into hiscolumn whenever possible. Write to him in care of KingFeatures Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Marcos Ambrose’s achievements have beensomewhat obscured.

Juan Pablo Montoya is in the midst of quitea breakthrough. Drivers with road-racing back-grounds have seldom fared well driving stockcars on ovals, andMontoya made

the 2009 Chase for the Sprint Cup.Ambrose is another ex-road racer who has shown con-

siderable progress, but his achievements have been over-shadowed by Montoya, the Colombian who competedsuccessfully in Formula One before turning his atten-tion to NASCAR.

Ambrose — a native of Tasmania, an island off thesouthern coast of Australia — drove touring cars in Aus-tralia before giving the States a shot. Touring cars areshaped somewhat like American stock cars, but are moretechnically advanced.

In his first full season of Sprint Cup competition,Ambrose finished in the top five four times and finished17th in the point standings. He finished second inWatkins Glen, N.Y., and third in both Sonoma, Calif.,and Bristol, Tenn.

“It was a wonderful year for me,” said Ambrose. “Itwas a year that was either going to work out how it has,or I was going to pack my bags and come home.

“I needed to have a breakout year. When you get tothe Cup level full-time, you really have to make an im-pression, and I think I did that.”

Ambrose said his next goal is “win a race and con-tend for the Chase.”

He hopes his success will draw other Australians totry their hand at NASCAR.

“I think raising awareness of Australia and Austra-lian racing in the U.S. is working really well. People aresaying ‘Marcos Ambrose ... where did he come from?’... Being an Australian in NASCAR has worked outgreat.”

Ambrose stressed, though, that the transition hasn’tbeen an easy one.

“I took on a huge challenge, and I didn’t expect it towork out,” he said. “As it did, I started to see blue sky in

“On the race track, it took a lot of time to actually gain the respect from mypeers, and I got picked on for quite a while, but was able to hold my own, and Ididn’t step out of line too much whilst I was trying to learn and get to the front.... It hasn’t been any master plan; it’s just been keeping to the fundamentals.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend and I havean ongoing discussion about how we catch colds.I believe the only way is by being exposed to agerm. My friend agrees, but also says you canbecome chilled, and that results in a cold. Pleasesettle this once and for all. — L.G.

ANSWER: The only way to catch a cold is tomeet up with a cold virus. But let’s kick this arounda little while it lies there quivering.

Rhinoviruses are responsible for many colds. This virus is passed from one person to anothermost often via the hands and fingers. An infectedperson invariably will have virus on his or herhands and fingers. If that person touches anotherperson’s hands or fingers, the virus is transferred. All the second person has to do is touch his or hernose or eyes and the virus has found a new home.(The drainage channel for tears siphons virusesinto the nose.) It’s also possible to spread a coldthrough sneezing or coughing, but that’s a sec-ondary route.

Many colds are preceded by a body chill. That’spart of the infection symptoms, and that might bewhat your friend refers to.

Once a virus lands in a person’s nose, the timetill the development of cold symptoms is short —eight to 12 hours. Runny nose, nasal stuffiness, scratchy throat, cough and sneezing are typicalsymptoms. They peak in 48 hours and are gone inabout one week. A person is most contagious dur-ing the first three days of symptoms, when nasaldischarge is at high volume and when it containsthe most viruses.

If by “chilling” your friend means being in acold blast of air or getting your feet wet in frigid

Catch a Chill,Catch a Cold?

weather and shivering as a result, she has a slightpoint. That kind of chilling constricts the nose’sblood vessels and decreases mucus production. Itmight, therefore, permit cold viruses to mount amore effective attack and can contribute to the easeof catching a cold. All the same, without the virusthere is no cold.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 34 and have been

jogging for 10 years. I do it year-round.I’ve noticed this winter that my knees feel stiff

before I run. They don’t hurt during the run orafter. Could this be a sign that I’m getting arthri-tis? — B.C.

ANSWER: It’s not likely that at age 34 you’recoming down with arthritis. It’s more likely aweather thing. Cold weather thickens joint fluid. That makes joints stiff. Warming the fluid by ex-ercise relieves the stiffness.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As a calorie counter

from way back, will I lose weight if I eat 1,500calories a day? How about if I eat 1,200 caloriesone day and 1,800 the next? — K.T.

ANSWER: If you burn more than 1,500 calo-ries a day but take in only 1,500 calories, youshould lose weight.

You can still lose if one day you take in slightlymore and the next day slightly less. You can countthe calorie deficit over a week’s time.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer in-

dividual letters, but he will incorporate them in his col-umn whenever possible.Readers may write him orrequest an order form ofavailable health newslet-ters at P.O. Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Top DogsBy Sam Mazzotta

The American Kennel Club recently teamed with AOL’s PawNation.com to find outwhat the top 125 dogs in pop culture were, and how they ranked. The criteria for makingthis list included how loudly students at certain colleges cheered for their mascots, andreader polls at PawNation. I’m not entirely sure their research methods were sound, but Iguess it was fun.

Topping the pop culture list was Snoopy. Do kids today even know about this “time-less” Peanuts comic strip character? I can’t argue with it — I’m a big fan of Snoopy, particularly his endless Sopwith Camel dogfights.

Texas A&M’s mascot, Reveille, made No. 2 on the list. This was the dog who was“cheered” into the rankings. Hmm.

Other rankings seem fine: Scooby Doo rounded out the top three; Eddie, from thedefunct “Frasier” series, was next; and Brian, the talking dog from “Family Guy,” got theNo. 10 spot. I was a little confused by other rankings. Two songs made the top ten, “HowMuch is That Doggie in the Window” and “Who Let the Dogs Out.” Okay, I guess ifcartoon pups can make the rankings, a completely abstract use of dogs in a symbolicmanner by a rap group is fine, too.

Anyway, I’d love to list the top 25 or 50 or 125 claimed on the AKC/AOL list, but it’snot to be found on either site and no actual link was given on the release. Way to go,AKC/AOL. Here’s the top 10, anyway:
