IN THE COLD! (continued):• Because Canada has long winters, it is no wonder that they have a lot of people who like to ice fish. It is home to the greatest number of participants in the sport. In the year 2000, Canadian anglers spent a combined total of 4,489,296 days ice fishing!• A small fishing village on the south shore of Nova Scotia, West Pubnico, was named for the native Mi’kmaq word, Pombcoup, which means: “a hole that has been cut in the ice for fishing.” • More than 60% of the fish Canadians catch beneath the ice are caught and released. They eat less than one third of their catch. They practice CPR: “catch, photograph, release!”• Minnesota is nicknamed the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” There are actually 11,842 lakes in the state that are 10 acres or larger (4 ha). With so many lakes and cold winters it is no wonder that ice fishing is a popular sport. • Minnesota is known for its abundance of ice shelters set up on the state’s lakes. If you’ve ever flown into or out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport you have probably noticed all of the dots on the lakes! Each year it is estimated that around 150,000 ice fishing shelters are set up. The state’s Department of Natural Resources estimates that about 30% of the fish caught in the state are caught when the lakes are frozen. • Ice fishing is a risky sport and the depth of the ice is something to be taken very seriously. In 2009, over 100 people were stranded on the Great Lakes. They became stranded when ice broke away where they were fishing. The Coast Guard rescued all, however, one died in route to the hospital due to hypothermia. This life threatening condition occurs when body temperature falls below 95° F (35° C).• It is imperative when ice fishing to get expert advice. Knowing the area and the ice conditions can make the sport fun; not knowing can lead to disaster. It is recommended that ice thickness for someone fishing alone (not really advisable) be almost four inches (10 cm). For groups, where more are standing on the ice, the ice should be about 7.5 inches (18 cm). When vehicles are taken on the ice, which does happen in some cold climates, the ice should be 11-12 inches (28 cm).• Icebergs are much thicker than the ice that freezes over lakes in the winter. Icebergs are chunks of ice that developed on land, then break off and float in a lake or ocean. The word "iceberg” originates from the Dutch "ijsberg", which means ice mountain. • Icebergs are found in all shapes and sizes, from very small pieces to ice islands that can be the size

of a small country. The term “iceberg” actually refers to ice larger than 16 feet (5 m) in diameter. Smaller icebergs are known as growlers and bergy bits. Even though they are smaller, they are harder to spot and therefore very dangerous for ships. • Even though most icebergs are found floating in oceans of salt water they are made of pure fresh water. Most of the icebergs on earth are found in the frigid waters surrounding Antarctica and in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Most icebergs originate near the west coast of Greenland.• “Iceberg Alley” is the name given to an area from Baffin Bay, off the west coast of Greenland where many massive icebergs break into the water, to the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador area is known as the Iceberg Capital of the World. • Approximately 90% of the icebergs that are in the waters near Newfoundland and Labrador originated from the glaciers of western Greenland. They are among the fastest moving icebergs in the world. Even so, by most standards, the four miles (7 km) per year that they tend to move seems slow. It takes an estimated two to three years for the massive icebergs to cover the 1600 nautical miles (2963 km) and reach the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. If icebergs reach the Atlantic Ocean before melting, they melt rather quickly in the warm waters. • After the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, near Newfoundland, the United States, Canada, and eleven other countries formed the International Ice Patrol. The patrol uses airplanes and radar to track icebergs that make their way into the major shipping lanes. The U.S. National Ice Center monitors icebergs larger than 5,400 square feet (500 sq/m) near Antarctica using satellite data. Icebergs are not just studied and watched to protect ships, scientists use them as tools for studying ocean processes and climate. • A way that some inventive Canadians have chosen to use the abundance of icebergs floating in their waters is in creating vodka and other alcoholic spirits. The Iceberg Vodka Corporation, based in St. John’s Newfoundland, produces spirits “made from naturally pure 12,000-year-old icebergs harvested off the coast of Newfoundland.” They use Ontario-grown sweet corn in making their beverages as well. They also make Iceberg Rum and Iceberg Gin. • The largest iceberg ever recorded was found near Baffin Island in 1882. Eight miles long and three miles wide (13 km long/6 km wide), its height above water was 65 feet (20 m). ■

strong but looked beautiful and delicate. English porcelain tea cups have a translucent look when held up to a light. • The Chinese still prefer to drink tea from pottery-ware. They use what is known as “purple clay” from the Yixing, Jianqsu, and Jinqdezhen regions of China. • Chinese purple clay cups are thicker than most pottery and without handles. The thicker pottery protects hands from burns that are possible with thinner China cups. • Japanese tea drinkers also use handle-less pottery or sometimes ceramic cups. They usually have hand painted designs with poems, flowers or even geisha girls. Some Japanese tea ware is made with innovative lids and strainers built into

TEA CUPS While many China cabinets and hutches contain tea cup collections in the homes of wealthy and not-so-wealthy North Americans, these fine breakables are not just for special occasions. Many homes around the world use their tea sets on a regular basis. • The reason most tea cups are considered “China,” is that they originated in that country. The first tea cups did not have handles and were called tea bowls. Some of the early tea bowls used in Europe were more like deep saucers and were used so that the tea cooled quicker.• Saucers, as we know them, to accompany tea cups did not appear until 1700. Tea cups with handles were not seen until Robert Adams came up with the idea in about 1750. • The English embraced Mr. Adams designs. They thought tea bowls were messy and people often burned their hands on them. Robert Adams designed cups that were taller and wider than the base and the saucers he introduced, more flat like small plates, were welcomed as a place to let a hot cup rest. His designs quickly became the standard for what became known as the “English Tea Service Set.” • Since the English started the tradition of putting cream and sugar in their tea, Mr. Adams also started designing tea pots, sugar holders, cream/milk containers, and even matching tea spoons. His sets were made from porcelain that was

the cups. • Middle Eastern countries enjoy tea in tea bowls or glasses. Tea glasses are preferred in Morocco. They are usually very festive and decorated with colorful artistic details.• Tea in India is usually of the Chai variety and served in small glass tea cups or tea bowls.• If you visit Tibet you are likely to be served their famous (or is it infamous?) yak butter tea. This different tea is not served using an English tea service but appears in a large tea pot and is usually poured and imbibed from wooden tea bowls. • Russians embraced tea as a beverage in the early 1600s and it was a major part of a trade treaty with China establishing a border between the two countries. Russian tea service is centered on a massive tea vessel, called a samovar, similar to Tibetan pots used for yak butter tea. The tea is served in a glass that is placed in a silver (or other metal) holder called a podstakanniki. Tea and vodka are the most popular drinks in Russia. • Wherever you travel it is likely that you will be able to order tea. It is one of the most popular drinks worldwide. The royal families of England were the ones who made tea services popular for formal and informal visiting. It was during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) that the modern six piece tea sets were introduced to the public. ■

Ask Your

HeALTH CAre

eXPerTHow do I choose the right Home Health Agency? -- Rick T. Grand Rapids, MI

Answer: Choosing the right Home Health Agency (HHA) for you or your loved one is a very important process. When picking a HHA you should concentrate on three (3) things.1. What kind of care am I or my loved one looking for?2. How long has this company been in business and are they acccredited/licensed?3. Is the HHA willing to provide past clients as referrences?Obviously these are deeper questions than can be answered in this column but briefly I will outline why you would ask these questions. 1. Do you need skilled care (RN, LPN, PT, OT, ST) or non skilled care (CENA or Home or Home Health Aide). 2. Is this company new? Do they have full policies and procedures? Do they conduct background checks? Are they accredited through a national organization (CHAP, JHACO, ACHC, Medicare). 3. If a company is unable to provide referrences I would strongly question whether A) they have had many patients, and B) if they have had any satisfied clients? As always if you have questions about Home Health Care please feel free to contact my office at (248) 553-3333

Ask Your DentistDr. Nidaa Abdal, DDS

Periodontal DiseaseDear Dr. Abdal: What is periodontal disease? -- Christina J., Farmington Hills, MI

Answer: Periodontal disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. It can be painless and have no symptoms until it is too late. The process of infection can be controlled by treatment. The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums (gingiva), due to bacterial by-products (toxins) found in plaque and tartar (calculus). Gingivitis left untreated leads to periodontitis, a bacterial infection which causes the gums to

pull away from the teeth leaving spaces between the teeth and the gums. These spaces are called pockets. Harmful bacteria migrate into the pockets, down the tooth to the supporting bone and destroy the bone that holds your teeth in your mouth. This is called bone loss. Your teeth can then become loose, abcessed, and may need to be extracted. Your dental provider can provide treatment to stop the progression of the infection and control the bacteria.

Q: I have been having trouble with my knees and I’ve been told not to run and stay off treadmills. Everyone has told me that treadmills cause too much impact and stress on the legs. Do I sell my treadmill?

-- Pat M. Plymouth, MI

A: Before selling your treadmill here are a couple of tips you may want to try first. The first tip; check your shoes, if your shoes are old and worn this can promote knee pain. To know if your shoes are worn out, you should first look at the bottoms of your shoes. If you see an obvious wear pattern it’s time to replace your shoes. You can also feel (with your hand) the inside sole of the shoe. If you feel a significant wear pattern on the inside you should also replace your shoes.

The next tip is to be aware of your running or walking technique. When walking or running on a treadmill notice if you are aggressively toeing in or toeing out, if so this could be causing the knee pain. Practice keeping your feet straight when walking or running on the treadmill. The next tips to try are adjusting the incline on your treadmill to 2.5 or 3.0 and increase your stride length by an additional 4-6 inches so that you strike the heel of the front foot first. Also keep your speed at a rate that you can consistently maintain your stride length and heel strike. Before selling that treadmill be sure to try the tips described above, you might just find that you can enjoy the use of your treadmill pain free.

Periodontist | Dr. Steve WolfDr. Steve Wolf has been creating Smiles in the Metro Detroit for many years. His practice specializes in prevention and treatment of gum disease including cosmetic procedures to esthetically enhance your smile as well as dental implants that can replace single or multiple missing teeth.

Ask Your Periodontist: Dr. Steve WolfDear Dr. Wolf: Why do adults loose teeth, and what can be done if a tooth is lost?-- George P., Farmington, MIAdults generally loose teeth due to periodontal “gum” disease, tooth decay, trauma and some people are born with missing teeth. In the past dentists would cement or hook a bridge or crown to remaining teeth or place dentures on tender gum tissue. Technology has now made Dental implant procedures, performed since the 1950s, more feasible predictable and affordable for our patients. The implant is painlessly placed, with numbing anesthetic, replacing the root of the tooth. A post is then placed inside the implant to hold a new porcelain crown. A single tooth or a group of them can be replaced in this manner. Implants can also be used to help support dentures and partials. Dental implants not only provide stability for your bite, they also help strengthen the jawbone, and prevent change in its structure. They’re just like real teeth! They don’t hook onto anything; they don’t clasp onto anything. They’re immovable in your mouth, and don’t get cavities.

Curbing HairballsBy Sam Mazzotta

Dear Paw's Corner: My cat, “Chester,” coughs up a big hairball about once every two weeks. Is this unusual? How can I stop it? -- Grossed Out in Chicago

Dear Grossed Out: Coughing up the occasional hairball isn’t unusual for most cats, but if it seems to be happening more frequently, getting a professional opinion is important. Schedule a checkup for Chester with his veterinarian, and bring along the next hairball (or two) he coughs up in the meantime. The vet can check for any underlying condition, as well as check the hairball for traces of blood, plants or other items of concern. The vet will make sure Chester’s general health is good for his age (or not), and can offer suggestions and possibly medication to reduce the frequency at which your cat is horking up hairballs.Hairballs are formed due to a cat’s habit of cleaning its fur with its tongue. The rough tongue tends to pick up stray hairs and dander, which the cat swallows. Most of the time, this hair passes through the digestive tract without a problem. But occasionally this does not happen, and the cat regurgitates the hair (and other stuff matted into it). If Chester gets an otherwise clean bill of health, the vet probably will recommend using a hairball preventative. The most common type is a petroleum jelly-based treat that is licked off the end of your finger. Chewable hairball treats also are available; these contain mineral oil and should be given sparingly. “Hairball control” cat foods contain extra fiber (usually cellulose) to help push excess hair through the digestive tract.

Question: I’m a first time boarder - what should I expect at the time of check-in? -- Annie P., Ypsilanti, MI

Answer: A new customer would need to bring in a copy of their pet’s vaccinations, completed forms, and any personal belongings for their pet if desired. We provide all bowls, and if bringing in your own food, please put the food in per serving baggies with your pet’s name on each bag. Customers pressed for time can fax the forms to us in advance. Check-in should only take a few minutes.

Q: I’ve always really liked Anthony Michael Hall, especially his recent sci-fi series, “Warehouse 13.” However, I do miss seeing him in comedies: His guest-starring turn on “Community” a few seasons back was hilarious. Can you tell me if he’ll be on a comedy soon?--Audrey W., via e-mail

A: When “Awkward” returns to MTV this summer for its super-size third season, Anthony Michael Hall will join the hit series as a teacher at Jenna’s high school. According to those in the know, Anthony will play a sadistic creative-writing teacher who insists on pushing his students beyond their academic limits. Anthony also co-stars in the feature-film comedy, “Sexy Evil Genius,” along with Michelle Trachtenberg, Seth Green and William Baldwin.Q: While I wasn’t a big fan of the story line Scott Foley had on last season’s “True Blood,” I was excited to see him in my living room again after leaving “Grey’s Anatomy.” What can I see him on next? -- Trudy K., via e-mail

A: I agree with you, Trudy. Scott Foley is one of those underrated, underutilized actors who we need to see much more of. So, you can imagine my happiness upon discovering that he is set to guest-star on one of my favorite shows, ABC’s “Scandal.” His character is said to be a part of a major story arc that will play out toward the end of the current season. Creator and head writer Shonda Rhimes was eager to work with Scott again after his run on “Grey’s,” so one show’s loss is another’s gain!

Q: A while back you wrote that “Unforgettable” had belatedly been renewed for a second season; however, I’ve seen neither hide nor hair of it yet. Please tell me that the suits didn’t change their minds again! -- Hilary S., Portland, Maine

A: Don’t worry, Hilary, the Poppy Montgomery-starring police procedural will indeed have its second season on CBS. And we now have a premiere date, which is Sunday, July 28 at 9/8c. As I reported previously, season two will comprise 13 episodes, with Dylan Walsh, Jane Curtin and most other cast members returning.Readers: A few months ago, I was disheartened to report that AMC had decided not to renew “The Killing” for a third season. In another rare reversal -- along the lines of CBS’s

renewal of “Unforgettable” -- AMC recently announced that the crime drama WILL be back for a third season.Season three takes place a year after the Rosie Larson case was solved, as Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) searches for a runaway girl and uncovers a string of murders connected to Sarah Linden’s (Mireille Enos) previous murder investigation. Linden, no longer a detective, must return to both a career and a case she had put behind her.All this renewal reversal has given me new hope for ABC’s “GCB” to return, whether with ABC or another network. Let’s make this happen --TNT, I’m lookin’ at you!Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at [email protected].

Anthony Michael Hall

Dear Dr. Donohue: Two years ago I had shingles, and I now suffer the aftereffects of it. The sores went away in a month, but the stinging, burning, throbbing pain is still with me. I cannot wear clothing over the affected shoulder. No medicines have eased the pain so far. Is there any help? --M.L.Answer: You now are dealing with postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the shingles rash has gone. The virus that causes shingles is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Almost every adult on this continent harbors that virus, now called herpes zoster. It lives on in nerve cells. From time to time, at older ages, it wakens from its hibernation, travels down the nerve to the skin and causes an outbreak of blisters on a red base. The outbreak goes away in about three weeks. Pain can linger for a long time -- months, to years. In traveling down the nerve, the virus damaged it. I can list some of the postherpetic neuralgia medicines. Two are antidepressants -- nortriptyline and amitriptyline -- given not for depression but for pain relief. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is another antidepressant that can lessen postherpetic pain. Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-seizure medicine that’s approved for this problem. Neurontin (gabapentin) is another seizure medicine used for control of the lingering pain of shingles.Capsaicin lotion, cream or gel (Zostrix, Capsin, R-Gel) is applied directly to the involved skin. A higher concentration of capsaicin comes as a patch that’s applied in the doctor’s office, left on for an hour and then removed. Treatment can be repeated in three months. It’s called Qutenza. Another skin patch is the Lidoderm patch. The latest medicine is Gralise, an extended-release form of gabapentin -- Neurontin. It requires fewer doses. The entire shingles story is covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Dear Dr. Donohue: I get my calcium by drinking milk. I believe natural sources are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. The problem is that whole milk raises my cholesterol. My father died of a heart attack at a young age. Does skim milk have as much calcium as whole milk? -- R.T.Answer: Skim milk contains a little more calcium than whole milk. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 291 mg of calcium. The same amount of skim milk has 300 mg.

Dear Dr. Donohue: Many months ago, my feet turned numb. The numbness has spread up to my knees. It has made me quite unsteady when I walk. My doctor can’t find a cause or treatment for this. Can you suggest anything? -- L.O.Answer: Your description fits peripheral neuropathy, a deterioration of nerve function, often of the leg nerves. The causes for it are many. Frequently, however, a precise cause can’t be determined. You need to make an appointment to see a neurologist as soon as you can.Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.yearly in the United States.(c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved

Q: IS CREDIT REPAIR LEGAL?

-- Jerry A., Livonia, MI

A: The sad reality is that some people and companies tout so-called “credit repair tactics” that are, in fact, illegal. Some companies sell information and services that are dishonest, unethical, outdated and illegal. For example, some companies promote or sell what is known as “CPN Numbers”, which is basically a fake social security number or tax payer id number.CPN Numbers are illegal, and should NOT be considered a part of legitimate credit repair.Another common so-called “tactic”:“Just dispute all the negative information on your report as ‘not mine’.”Disputing everything on your report as “not yours” when it is indeed yours is dishonest, unethical, and probably illegal. In our opinion, it’s fraud. There are enough ways to honestly go about the credit repair process without resorting to lying. . If you act with knowledge, honesty and integrity, then credit repair is most definitely legal. For more information on how you an legally repair and improve your credit call 248-569-9120 and ask for me.

MULTIGENERATIONAL TRAVEL

Q: How can AAA Travel Agents help plan multigenerational trips?A: We set up everything from airport shuttles to adjoining rooms. We can suggest tours that meet the family interests and “must see” sites and activities.

Q: What makes a successful multigenerational vacation?A: Different generations will have different ideas of what they want out of a trip. We tell members to have a family meeting to gauge everyone’s wants and needs. We also advise families to come together for one meal or activity each day—whether it’s dinner or shore excursion. These shared experiences create family bonding time.

ASK YOUR Financial Planner

Kevin M. Krym, CFP®

Answer: New legislation averted much of the fiscal cliff’s negative near-term economic impact by extending the Bush-era tax cuts for the majority of Americans. It also extends long-term unemployment benefits that were set to expire. Had the House not acted, and the tax cuts enacted last decade expired fully, broad tax increases would have kicked in, as would $110 billion in automatic cuts to domestic and military spending. Also, working Americans have experienced a noticeable difference in the size of their paychecks, as payroll taxes increased two percentage points. This is the result of not extending the reduced withholding rate for these taxes, often referred to as the payroll tax holiday. To learn more about the new tax legislation visit www.kevinkrym.com or sign up for one of my upcoming seminars.

Dear Kevin: So we didn’t go over the ‘fiscal cliff”. I’m curious what that means and how that affects taxes?

Ask Your Jeweler

Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Email [email protected].

Dear Robert: What do I need to look for when buying a diamond? -- Joe B., Novi, MIAnswer: The simple answer is you need to look at the 4 C’s of diamonds Color, Clarity, Carat and Cut. Color refers to the degree to which a diamond approaches colorlessness. Clarity is the natural birthmark that every diamond has which are called natural inclusions. Many natural inclusions are microscopic and can be glimpsed using a 10-power jeweler’s loupe. The fewer inclusions in the rarer the stone. Carat weight is the size or weight of the diamonds. Cut is the most important because it helps to unleash the fiery sparkle of your diamond. A well cut diamond allows the max amount of light to be reflected. . Cut is a technical quality determined by the skill of the cutter. Shape is a personal choice. Round is the most popular shapes. Other poplar traditional shapes are princess cut, oval, emerald cut, radiant cut, marquise, pear and heart shapes.Robert Miller is a Master Certified Jeweler and Master Gemologist with over 35 years of experience. Things we need to look for here are adjustable thresholds and deep compression seals, so the unit will maintain a seal as the house moves in the winter. Good solid jams of the correct size and depth. Solid Lock blocks in the door to add security to the system. Some doors from Therma Tru are now available in there Three Point Locking System allowing the lock to secure in three locations along the edge of the door. Question: What kind of Michigan rental properties do you manage? --Jake T. Farmington, MI

Answer: We manage a variety of different properties here in southeastern lower Michigan. A wise property owner once told me, never own anything that takes more than an hour to arrive at. I have lived by this for years, forgoing otherwise great potential investments in places on the west coast of the state (St. Joseph e.g.) just because it takes 3 hours one way.I do divide my time between apartment complexes in Ann Arbor and Rochester Hills, with my headquarters in Farmington Hills being a multi-use office and commercial building, which many great local entrepreneurs either call ‘home’ or ‘have graduated from.We also manage houses located throughout Oakland County, and also have commercial buildings in Ferndale and Oak Park. We have no experience with trailer parks, heavy industrial buildings, high-rise commercial/residential, or professional buildings; they are specialty properties that require different knowledge; not that we wouldn’t love the chance to manage one of the above. While the buildings and the houses and the properties are all different species, they are still similar animals and the principles remain the same: keep them full, keep everyone paying, keep the lights and heat on and reinvest whenever possible

INVISIBLE SCREENS?Dear Marty: My neighbor just got new windows and her screens are barely visible. Is this a new product ? -- Peggy H., Northville, MI

Answer: Yes. Some window manufacturers offer an optional upgraded screen that will provide 50% more clarity than standard screens. The screening material is very fine and durable. It will allow more fresh air and sunlight, also protect from even the smallest insects. This screen is not available in patio doors.

Careers In Real EstateDear Robert : I am thinking about making a career change and real estate has always been an interest of mine. What’s involved in getting into the business? --Dan B., Livonia, MI

Answer: Century 21 Curran & Christie is excited that you asked that great question! As the #1 Century 21 Office in the Great Lakes region for the past several years, we are always interested in meeting with individuals about a career in real estate! Recently, we learned that some revisions may be coming, but at this moment, the process is fairly simple. #1 You make the decision to get into the business. This may include preliminary interviews, a career session, or a sponsorship appointment with a Broker.#2 You select, attend, and successfully pass the “Pre License Training Program” offered by an accredited school. Right now, in Michigan, you need to complete a 40 hour class requirement; this is likely to be increased after October 31, 2012.#3 You successfully pass the State of Michigan Real Estate Salesperson’s Licensing Examination. In order to take the exam, you must be sponsored by a Broker, have completed the 40 hour class and be submitted by the school to the State as a “candidate” eligible to sit for the exam.#4 You interview and ultimately partner with a Broker who will a)be responsible to the State for you b)teach and train you in the business c)coach you to the level of success you desire d)continue to support, motivate and encourage you as you build an incredible career with unlimited opportunitiesIf you are interested in learning more about a career as a Smarter.Bolder.Faster Agent with Century 21, Call Us Today! Ask Your PAINTING

EXPERTJames Kern

Dear James: Am I better off applying a water- based latex paint or an oil-based paint?-- Ashleigh E, Farmington Hills, MI

Answer: There are different products for use on the interior and exterior of homes. Which one you choose can depend on what has been previously applied to the surface. It is important to know what product you are trying to cover. Many times a professional can tell what is likely on the surface or you can use a test kit to detect the presence of oil based paint. Putting latex paint over oil can cause problems down the road. Latex doesn’t bond well to oil and can be scraped off with your finger nail. You can remedy this by applying a full primer down before using latex paint. I prefer to just go ahead and use oil to avoid problems. Interior trim is the ideal place to use oil based paint because it dries harder and smoother. Latex is perfect for the exterior of homes.

Dear Varsity Lincoln: I have heard a lot of buzz about the new 2013 Lincoln MKZ design. What have they changed on the new MKZ? - Brett A, W. Bloomfield, MI

Answer: What hasn’t changed would probably be the most accurate description! The open spaciousness of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ is a result of what’s not there. No traditional shifter creates a thin center console that flows gracefully through the cabin. Simply use your fingertips, to start the car and select a gear by pressing a button on the integrated center stack. Traditional audio and climate control knobs have been redesigned as well. Instead, set your sound and temperature with beautiful lighted slider bars and vivid LCD touch screen. You will be surrounded by rich woods and contemporary aluminum finishes that create visually stunning environment. Performance must feel right – in every sense and the 2013 MKZ won’t disappoint! The standard 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 turbocharged direct-injection engine, offers up to 33 mph hwy1 with 240 hp2 and 270 lb.-ft. of torque2 – the performance you’d expect from a 6-cylinder (FWD: 22 mpg city/33 hwy. AWD: 22 mpg city/31 hwy).1 Prefer even more of a rush, opt for the 3.7L Ti-VCT 24 –valve aluminum V6.3 It increases output to 300 hp and 277 lb.-ft of torque, and still offers impressive economy, thanks in part to shutters in the front grille that automatically close at speed to help you slip through the air with less resistance (FWD: 19 mpg city/28 hwy. AWD: 18 mpg city/26 hwy).1

For more information or to schedule an appointment to see the new 2013 Lincoln MKZ, call Varsity Lincoln at 248-374-3412.1EPA estimated. 2Figures achieved using premium fuel. 3Available feature.

TIME TO RENEW?Q: How often should I contact my agency to review my auto insurance? A: You should contact your insurance agency each time your policy renews as well as any time something in your household changes (i.e. a new driver, a birthday, a new car). Your agency should welcome the call and discuss your protection needs. You need to know that your agency knows you, your needs and that they also know what's happening in the insurance industry in Michigan. The relationship between you and your insurance agency should be open and inviting.
