TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON

INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE (continued):• The bulk of the world’s caviar comes from the eggs of the female sturgeons of the Caspian

Sea. The Almas species of the beluga sturgeon is the source for the most expensive, and is a pale amber color rather than the usual black. The eggs are taken only from those fish between 60 and 100 years old, resulting in the rather hefty cost of about $12,500 per pound.

• A year of tuition, room and board will cost you the most at Sarah Lawrence College. It takes more than $53,000 annually to get your education at this liberal arts institution located in Yonkers, New York. Famous alumni include Barbara Walters, Yoko Ono, and fashion designer Vera Wang. Other high-priced universities include George Washington University, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown University, all at about $50,000 a year. While we may think of Harvard, Princeton, and Yale as some of the highest-priced schools, they aren’t even in the top 25.

• A crocus flower grown in the Mediterranean is the source of saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. The spice comes from the filaments, with each thread picked out of the flower by hand. Because there are only three filaments per flower, it takes about 75,000 flowers to deliver one pound of saffron. Price for that one pound can be as much as $2,700. The ancients used saffron for medicinal purposes, and modern medicine has confirmed its cancer-suppressing and antioxidant properties. It may also delay the development of macular degeneration. You may have eaten saffron in paella, bouillabaisse, or risotto dishes.

• Even fast food is getting expensive. A hamburger meal in New York City can be purchased for $5.99 at a popular fast food stop, but in Dublin, Ireland, home of the world’s most expensive fast food, the price for the same thing is $9.16.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE (continued):

• “Happy birthday, Mr. President,” crooned actress Marilyn Monroe to President John F. Kennedy on May 29, 1962. About 17,000 folks gathered at New York City’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate JFK’s 45th birthday. Marilyn performed in a flesh-colored beaded gown designed by Jean Louis, a dress which sold at a 1999 Christie’s auction for $1,267,000, setting a record for the most expensive dress sold at an auction.

• “Life is like a box of chocolates,” Forrest Gump told us, but he may not have known about the box that retails for $2,600 per pound. The confections are created by Danish chef Fritz Knipschildt in Norwalk, Connecticut, whose establishment also offers the 1.9-oz. LaMadeline au Truffe chocolate truffle for $250 each. Be sure to call ahead, since these truffles only have a seven-day shelf life and must be pre-ordered.

• If you visit Manhattan’s DB Bistro Moderne, you can dine on one pretty pricey burger. Order up the Double Truffle Hamburger and you’ll receive seven ounces of sirloin steak stuffed with three ounces of beef rib meat mixed with truffles and foie gras (duck or goose liver), served up on a Parmesan poppy seed bun. Add a side salad and some truffle shavings, and there you have your $99 lunch! If you’re watching your waistline, the single size is available for just $59.

• Manhattan is also home to Nino’s Bellissima, which offers the 12-inch “Luxury Pizza” for $1,000, or $125 per slice. This thin-crust delicacy has to be ordered 24 hours in advance to give the chef time to obtain the six types of caviar necessary to make it. Lobster, crème fraiche, and fresh chives complete the list of toppings.

New Year’s Resolutions the Easy Way…

A New Year’s resolution is a promise you make to yourself. Keeping that promise isn’t easy, though. Sometimes we choose resolutions that are impossible to keep because they’re too broad or beyond our capabilities. Or the plan falls apart the first time the going gets tough.

Still, there can be benefits to making resolutions, even if we only keep them for a short time. Here are a few to consider. The specifics are up to you.

• Volunteer.

• Exercise. If it’s not fun, try something else to get the same result.

• Make a difference in someone else’s life.

• Sign up for a month of gym classes.

• Don’t talk about health or weather when the kids or grandkids call.

• Cross things off your to-do list.

• Read every day.

• Take up a sport. Get a few lessons so you get a good start.

• Buy a few extra cans of food each week at the grocery store and deliver to the food bank at the end of the month.

• Work the newspaper puzzles daily.

• Acquire a new skill.

• Break an unhealthy habit and acquire a healthy one.

• Learn to meditate, and do it every day, or try yoga or Tai Chi.

• Listen twice as often as you speak.

• Sign up for a class. When it’s over, sign up for another one.

• Borrow travel videos from the library.

• Subscribe to a new monthly magazine, or read it at the library.

It’s OK if you break a resolution. It really is. Just try again and adjust your goals, or pick another one. Perhaps one of your resolutions will become a pleasurable habit. After all, it’s all about creating a new beginning.

DEcORatE ORNamENtS With FRiENDSDeck the halls and trim your Christmas tree with colorful, easy to assemble and design shiny ornaments. Choose a craft to fit the abilities of each child so that your whole family can share in the festive spirit of holiday preparation.

You also might use this holiday season as an excuse to invite friends over for an evening of ornament-making. Creating decorations calls forth the imagination, and if we make them with friends of all ages, a happy, artistic collaboration takes place. Best of all, the messiness and the laughter glues together more than ornaments. Memories are made, friendship bonds are strengthened, and the special event might become a new tradition.

Here are some quick and easy ornament-making ideas:

PERSONaLiZED BaLL ORNamENtExpress your creativity by decorating purchased or previous years’ plain ball ornaments using nontoxic permanent markers or glitter paint in squeeze bottles. If you print names on the ornaments, they can double as a place card at your holiday dinner table and as a Christmas 2008 gift memento.

maRBLED BaLL ORNamENtRemove the metal cap from the top of a clear round ornament. Add a couple of drops of water inside the ornament, then a couple of drops of acrylic paint. Gently swirl it around. Add a second color if you wish, and repeat for a marbled effect. Replace the metal cap when paint is dry.

SNOWmaN ORNamENtUse a glue gun to attach a small clear ball ornament to the top of a larger one to form the head and body. Use a paintbrush to add a few brushstrokes of white glitter paint. Let dry. Use a marker or paint to create eyes and mouth. Glue a small orange felt cutout for a carrot nose. Dress him with a knit or soft fabric scarf where the two balls are glued together. Glue in place, then add a little hat. Find two twigs outdoors and glue onto the large ball for arms.

“The grandkids are coming!” tip: Start a new tradition and give your grandchild a purchased or homemade ornament each year. The growing collection from you will be treasured in years to come.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE (continued):

• Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe manu-factures only two Sky Moon Tourbillon wristwatches each year, one in platinum and one in rose gold. This intricate timepiece is double-faced, with the reverse side featuring a sapphire blue nocturnal sky showing the movements of stars and the moon’s orbit and phases. The movement on this complex piece has 686 parts and provides solar time, lunar time, sidereal time, and leap year information, as well as a perpetual calendar. Every quarter-hour the watch emits rich-sounding gongs, resembling the bells of a cathedral. At a 2008 auction, a platinum version of the watch sold for $1.49 million, earning it the title of “most expensive modern wristwatch.”

• For just $34,000 a night, travelers can enjoy the luxury of the Ty Warner Penthouse Suite at the Four Seasons in New York City. Occupying the entire 52nd floor of the city’s tallest hotel, this 4,300-square-foot suite boasts 25-foot cathedral ceilings and an impressive view of Central Park, downtown Manhattan, and the Statue of Liberty. Guests have the benefit of their own butler, personal trainer, and private chauffeur driving a Rolls Royce. The nine rooms feature artwork, gilded chandeliers, statues, crystal sinks, marble, and inlays of semi-precious stones. A grand piano and classics-filled library are provided for a guest’s leisure time, while a private spa and indoor-outdoor garden complete with waterfall are perfect for relaxation. Hotel management lists maximum occupancy of this suite at three adults, and specifies that additional rooms must be reserved for anything above that number.

• On Dec. 24, 1851, a devastating fire at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., destroys about two-thirds of its 55,000 volumes, including most of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library. Today, the collection, housed in three enormous buildings in Washington, contains more than 17 million books.

• On Dec. 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suffering from severe depression, cuts off the lower part of his left ear with a razor while staying in Arles, France. He later documented the event in a painting titled “Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear.”

• On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up the bar at the Carey Hotel in Wichita, Kan., causing several thousand dollars in damage and landing her in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons as part of her anti-alcohol crusade.

• On Dec. 21, 1937, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” debuts. The film, created by Walt Disney’s animation company, was the first feature-length animated movie. The film became a classic, and box-office receipts recouped the film’s cost of $1.5 million by the end of its first year in circulation.

• On Dec. 26, 1946, in Las Vegas, mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens The Pink Flamingo Hotel and Casino at a total cost of $6 million. The 40-acre facility wasn’t complete. Because gamblers had no rooms at the hotel, they took their winnings elsewhere. The casino lost $300,000 in the first week of operation.

• On Dec. 22, 1952, the first Corvette sports car, a running production-ready prototype, is completed. The name “Corvette” came from a type of small, maneuverable warship used by Allied forces in World War II.

• On Dec. 25, 1996, 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey is killed in her Boulder, Colo., home. John and Patsy Ramsey, her parents, called police at 5:52 a.m. the following morning to report their daughter missing. JonBenet’s body was found under a blanket in the basement that afternoon.

Q: I have a silver bracelet that has four charms on it: a pack of Chesterfield cigarettes, and the likenesses of Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Arthur Godfrey. What can you tell me about it? -- Dorothy, Prince George, Va.

A: Charm bracelets were especially popular throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. Charms that are especially desirableincludeonesdepictingDisneycharacters, includingMickeyandMinnieMouse,DonaldDuckandSnow White; entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Mae West and Elvis Presley; and other souvenir charms purchasedatWorldFairsandotherimportantevents.A charm of Eisenhower issued during his 1952 campaign recently sold online for $25. Q:IhavefourNormanRockwellprints,FreedomfromFear,FreedomfromWant,FreedomtoWorshipandFreedom of Speech. I would like to know more about them. -- Phyllis, Sun City West, Ariz.

A: Norman Rockwell’s “Four Freedoms” were first published as Saturday Evening Post covers from February 20, 1943 through March 23, 1943, at the height of World War II. The posters were inspired by an address two years earlier by President Franklin Roosevelt before a joint session of the U.S. Congress. The posters were later reprinted. To find out values, I suggest you secure a copy of Norman Rockwell Identification and Value Guide to Magazines, Posters, Calendars and Books by Denis Jackson. It is available for $24.99 at www.amazon.com and in most larger bookstores.

aLL haiL hENDRicK mOtORSPORtSAmong the historically significant achievements of Jimmie Johnson, crew chief Chad Knaus and Hendrick Motorsports:

--Johnson’s fourth straight championship was the record-tying ninth by Hendrick Motorsports. Owner Rick Hendrick has won nine of the past 15, tying him with Petty Enterprises.

--In all-time championships in major American sports leagues, the rankings are: 1) New York Yankees, 27; 2) Montreal Canadiens, 24; 3) Boston Celtics, 17; 4) Los Angeles Lakers, 15; 5) Toronto Maple Leafs, 13; 6) Green Bay Packers, 12; 7) Detroit Red Wings, 11; and 8) St. Louis Cardinals, 10. Tied with nine are Hendrick, Petty Enterprises, the Chicago Bears and Oakland Athletics.

--Knaus is the only crew chief ever to win more than two consecutive (now) Sprint Cup titles, and his overall championship total (4) ties him with Kirk Shelmerdine for second place all-time. Dale Inman won eight championships.

--Hendrick Motorsports has won four straight titles once before. In the 1990s, drivers Jeff Gordon (1995, ‘97-98) and Terry Labonte (1996) won four straight titles for Hendrick. No other team has ever won more than three straight.

--Hendrick, the Yankees and the Canadiens are the only teams in any of the major American professional-sports leagues to win four or more consecutive championships more than once.

--Hendrick drivers Johnson, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon took the top three spots in the Sprint Cup standings. That’s never happened before.

--Hendrick has won nine championships since its inception in 1984, amassing a winning percentage of .346. That’s the best in American sports history, ahead of the Celtics (.266) and the Yankees (.255).

--Since 1984, no other American professional sports team has earned as many championships as Hendrick’s nine. The Chicago Bulls won six championships during that span, followed by the Yankees and Edmonton Oilers (NHL) with five each.

--Hendrick has won at least one Cup race in 24 straight seasons (1986-2009). The streak began on Feb. 16, 1986, with Geoff Bodine’s Daytona 500 victory.Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year by the National Motorsports Press Association

in 2008. His blog NASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of his reporting on racing, roots music and life on the road.
