The species’ Latin name Carchardon Carcharias, translates “jagged teeth,” and indeed, this shark has about 3,000 teeth, all arranged in several rows. They find their prey very easily due to their extreme sensitivity to the electrical field surround- ing living creatures, perceiving half a billionth of a volt. They’re found in every major ocean, and have a life span of more than 30 years. How likely are you to experience an unprovoked attack by a shark? You’re more likely to die from a lightning strike. • Due to the publicity generated by the death of adventurer Steve Irwin, lots of folks believe that the manta ray can kill a human. Irwin’s chest was pierced by a stingray, not a manta. The manta is the largest of all rays, up to 25 feet (7.6 m) across, weighing as much as 5,100 pounds (2,300 kg). While its tail is similar to that of a stingray, it does not have a stinger and is harmless to swimmers. • The squid, snail, octopus and clam are all examples of mollusks, soft-bodied creatures with no internal skeleton. Some mollusks have a hard outer-shell; some do not. More than 85,000 species of mollusks have been identi- fied, and most probably there are many more that have not yet been discovered. • The common squid can be found in all of the oceans of the world. When in danger, the squid emits a cloud of ink from a sac to confuse its preda- tors.

Even the longer-living species only live about four years. Reproduction takes its toll on this sea creature, with males surviving only a few months after mating and females dy-ing within a short time after their eggs hatch. An octopus, like the squid, is a cephalopod, which translates to “head to foot” because its appendages are attached to its head. Also like the squid, the octopus ejects a cloud of dark ink when threatened by predators. The ink is colored by melanin, the same compound that gives humans our hair color. Not only can the octopus eject ink for protection, it can instantly camouflage itself, changing the color of its skin to match its environment.

• The largest octopus is the Giant Pacific Octopus, which swims in the waters off British Columbia. Their aver-age weight is usually about 33 pounds (15 kg), with an arm span of about 14 feet (4.3 m) and rarely exceeds 90 pounds (40.8 kg). However, the occasional one is found that lives up to the name “giant,” such as the largest ever caught, which weighed about 600 pounds (272 kg).

• The mythological mermaid first appeared in stories around 1,000 B.C. An Assyrian legend tells of the goddess Atar-gatis falling in love with a mortal shepherd. When she ac-cidentally killed him, she was so devastated, she jumped into a lake and took the form of a fish. Although beauti-ful, mermaids don’t have a very good reputation. Folklore tells of them singing to people to enchant them, then lur-ing them to their doom. Rather than rescuing drowning sailors, they squeeze the life out of them. British tales speak of seeing a mermaid as an unlucky omen, one that foretells of impending disaster.

• The blue whale is the largest animal in the world, weigh-ing between 100 and 150 tons (100,000 to 150,000 kg). Even at birth, they are huge — 23 to 27 feet long (7 to 8.2 m) with a birth weight of three tons (2,722 kg)! A calf will nurse for about eight months, during which it will drink 100 gallons (379 l) of milk every day, putting on about 200 pounds (91 kg) a day. That’s eight pounds (3.6 kg) an hour! When a calf is weaned, it is 52 feet (16 m) long and weighs about 23 tons (20,900 kg).

• Just the tongue of a blue whale has a weight of 2.7 tons (2,700 kg), more than an elephant. Fifty people could stand on it! Its mouth can hold up to 90 tons of food and water, but strangely enough, the whale’s throat dimen-sions only allow for it to swallow an item the size of a beach ball. The heart weighs 1,300 pounds (590 kg), the size of a small car, and beats just 10 times per minute. Its major arteries are large enough for a small child to crawl through.

• “Benthic marine algae” is a fancy name used by scien-tists for seaweed. Seaweed is used for everything from food to medicine to fertilizer. People in some Asian coun-tries consider some varieties a great delicacy and receive health benefits from its rich deposits of calcium, magne-sium and iodine. Folks in Belize mix it with milk, nut-meg, cinnamon and vanilla for a popular beverage. Ger-mans add seaweed’s compounds to many of their beers. You’ll find it in cosmetics, wound dressings, toothpaste and diet pills. Exclusive spas offer seafood wraps for the body. At the hardware store, seaweed is present in paints and fertilizers.

• An echinoderm is characterized by “racial symmetry,” that is, several arms radiating from a central body. The most familiar echinoderm is the starfish. Although we think of the starfish as having five arms or “rays,” there are several species that have six or more. Some have 10 to 15 arms, and the Antarctic species Labidiaster annulatus can even have up to 50! A starfish’s mouth is found on the underside of its body, and many of these creatures swal-low their prey whole. Although the lifespan of the average starfish is about 10 years, some live past 30.

¥ On July 8, 1776, a 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Indepen-dence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Indepen-dence. As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons.

¥ On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adop-tion of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die. Both men had been central in the drafting of the historic document.

¥ On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army, to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference.

¥ On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam begins. Over the next five years, a total of 21,000 men would produce what would be the largest dam of its time. Today, the Hoover Dam generates enough en-ergy each year to serve more than a million people.

¥ On July 9, 1947, in a ceremony held at the Penta-gon in Arlington, Va., Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower appoints Florence Blanchfield to be a lieutenant colo-nel in the U.S. Army, making her the first woman in U.S. history to hold permanent military rank. Blanch-field had served as superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.

¥ On July 6, 1957, Liverpool teenagers John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time. Lennon was a member of the Quarry Men, scheduled to play at a public event. Two weeks later, Lennon invited McCartney to join the Quarry Men.

¥ On July 10, 1962, the United States Patent Office issues Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin a patent for his three-point automobile safety belt. The traditional two-point belt had been known to cause severe in-ternal abdominal injuries in the event of a high-speed crash.

Q: I was wonder-ing what one of my favorite TV hosts, Leeza Gibbons, has been up to lately. Is there a show on which I can catch

this beautiful lady? -- Paul G., via e-mailA: Leeza, 54, recently married her beau of almost three years, Steven Fenton. The former longtime “En-tertainment Tonight” host -- who hosts the PBS show “My Generation” -- will be back on daily TV this fall in the syndicated program “America Now,” with Bill Rancic. The half-hour daily news program will de-liver short segments of timely information covering lifestyle topics like health, beauty, finance, family and home. Check your local TV listings as the Sept. 12 premiere date gets closer, and check www.celebrityex-traonline.com in mid-July to read my full interview with the gorgeous newlywed.***Q: I am a longtime Don Johnson fan and would love

to see him on the screen again -- any screen. Since his pilot “Mann’s World” wasn’t picked up, do you know if he has anything else in the works? -- Whitney A., via e-mailA: If you haven’t already seen his turn on this past season’s “Eastbound & Down” as Kenny Powers’ father, Eduardo Sanchez, then you first and foremost must watch that. Then head over to Will Ferrell’s comedy website, funnyordie.com, and check out Don’s hilarious short, “Four Loko Vineyards.” Then you’ll need to wait a little while to see him in the thriller “Vineyard Haven,” which is set for a spring 2012 release. In it, Don plays an eccentric writing professor who wedges himself between a couple in distress.***Q: I finally saw the Sylvester Stallone shoot-’em-up ex-travaganza, “The Expendables,” on DVD the other night. The movie was actually a lot of fun, and I was surprised to have enjoyed it so much. I also noticed that the ending left it open for a possible sequel. Could there be plans for one? -- Jessica R., Hamilton, OhioA: You know it! The movie took in $266 million world-wide, so you can bet Sly and company want to cash in on this particular cash cow. All of the original “good guys” are

rumored to be returning for the sequel, which is set for an August 2012 release. There’s no word yet on whether ex-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to make another cameo (or perhaps a larger role this time?).***READERS: Thanks to all who entered Celebrity Extra’s summer of contests. Congrats to Steven S., Aaron B., Anthony S., Jennifer B. and Tiffany R., who each won an autographed CD of Rachel Fine’s debut CD, “Own Your Own.” Chris C., Frank G., David D., Alicia W. and Rita R. all won a copy of Barton Seaver’s cookbook, “For Cod and Country.” And last but not least, congrats to Kary S., who won the “True Blood” season three DVD set.

Kurt Busch led the Cup point standings through the first four races of the season. After a short slump, he’s climbed back into sixth place. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

Kurt Busch Closing on

Points LeaderFor Kurt Busch, the 2011

season has been a process of ebb and flow ... and ebb again. Or vice-versa.The 32-year-old Busch, the elder of racing brothers, began the season unofficially with a victory in the Budweiser Shootout, followed by finishes of fifth, eighth, ninth and seventh in the Sprint Cup season’s first four “point races.” Then he went into a slump, with finishes of 17th, 16th, 10th, 18th, 22nd, 27th and 14th.After the season’s first four races, Busch stood at the top of the point standings. Seven races later, he had fallen to eighth. But since then, the graph has turned upward again. Busch has finished fourth, ninth and second in the three most-recent races, lifting him back up to sixth in the standings, only 35 points behind leader Carl Edwards.Busch’s disgruntlement was obvious during the rough spots. Changes were made in management at Penske Racing, at least partly in response to Busch’s complaints, many of which were heard by fans over scanners during races. Now, once again, Kurt Busch is a picture of contentment, with results to back it up.Edwards ran into engine trouble at Michigan, almost eras-ing what had been a comfortable edge in points. Busch’s runner-up finish at Pocono Raceway was one ahead of

younger brother Kyle.“When the point leader has problems, everybody’s just chomping at the bit, licking their lips, going, ‘Wow, look at this, I’m right back in this.’ When you’re having good runs like we are, my little brother and me, just plugging away, that helps you feel more solid when you get to the month of August, after you get through the Brickyard, making that summer run to the Chase,” said Kurt.Given recent performances, “that summer run to the Chase” seems promising for both Busch brothers.Kurt Busch won the Cup championship in 2004, the first year the Chase format was implemented. At the time, he drove a Ford for Jack Roush. Now he drives one of two Dodges fielded by Roger Penske.“Right now it’s all about consistency,” said Kurt. “I’d like to break through and get a win just to help us feel more confident in our Chase position.“When the point leader has trouble, everybody benefits from that.”

For Advertising Call 251-680-7052 Page 5Ben Affleck, who won an Oscar for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Matt Damon, has completed director Terence Malick’s (“Tree of Life”) unti-tled film, with Oscar winners Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) and Rachel Weisz (“The Constant Gardener”), as well as Rachel McAdams (“Midnight In Paris”). This summer, Affleck will star in and direct “Argo” for George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s company. It’s about how the CIA

used a “Planet of the Apes” make-up artist to rescue six Americans during the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis by faking the production of a large-scale sci-fiction film. It’s based on a story from Wired Magazine and will be released in 2013.

A Michigan reader asks, “Why did ‘Gunsmoke’s’ James Arness and his brother, Peter Graves, have different names?” Years ago, Peter Graves, of TV’s “Mission: Impos-sible,” sat next to me on a plane headed to the Jack Benny tennis and golf tournaments in Texas, and I asked him that very question. Peter explained, “My grandfather came to America and told immigration his name was Aursnes but they wrote Aurness, which became our family name. When my brother, James Aurness started acting, he dropped the “u” and became James Arness. When I started acting, I couldn’t be Peter Aurness when my brother was James Arness, so I took the last name of my maternal grandfather and became Peter Graves.” The last thing Peter did was narrate the computer game “Darkstar: the Interactive movie,” released eight months after he passed away. Having met James Arness, who left us on June 3, and his brother, Peter Graves, who left us in March 2010, I can honestly say that they were extraordinary dedicated actors and devoted family men. We won’t see their like again!

We reported earlier that “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes would play Larry Fine and “Madtv’s” Will Sasso would play Curley in “The Three Stooges Movie.” Now we can tell you that Moe Howard will be played by Chris Diamantopolas. You saw him as Robin Williams in the “Mork & Mindy” TV movie, in the eighth season of “24” as chief of staff Rob Weiss, and as Frank Sinatra in the “Ken-nedy’s” mini-series. To check out what they’ll look like, Google the new Three Stooges film. Add “Glee’s” Jane Lynch, “Modern Fam-ily’s” Sofia Vergara, “Dreamgirls” Oscar win-ner Jennifer Hudson, “Boston Legal’s” Craig Bierko and “7th Heaven’s” Stephen Collins, and you’ve got a great cast. It looks as if The Farrelly Brothers will give “The Stooges” the send-up they truly deserve. After this movie comes out, though, if anyone asks you to “pick two fingers,” trust me ... DON’T!

¥ It was 19th-century German philosopher Arthur Scho-penhauer who made the following sage observation: “There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeat-ing it with an air of great solemnity.”

¥ Those who study such things say that half of all money spent on food in the United States is spent in restaurants.

¥ If, like me, you are constantly finding excess wire hangers in your closets, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that more than 2.7 billion of them were imported in 2010 alone. ¥ You might be surprised to learn that beer brewers in Australia are on the cutting edge of alternative energy production. They have created a “beer battery” -- the world’s first, they claim -- in which electricity is gener-ated by bacteria consuming the waste that is created by the brewing process. ¥ Companies today sometimes seem to go too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Che-sebrough, who invented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in 1872. In order to market his new creation as a salve for cuts and burns, he traveled around New York state dem-onstrating the efficacy of the product by burning his skin with acid, then applying Vaseline to the injury. A dis-play of his past burns that had been healed with Vaseline would, in theory, convince people to buy the product.

¥ If you’re looking to brighten up your living space with some greenery, you might want to consider getting a bonsai tree. They live longer than any other houseplant.

Since the average American eats 193 sandwiches every year, about 300 million nationwide every day, it’s certainly worth taking a look at this lunchtime staple. • British statesman John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sand-

wich, was a diehard poker fan. Back in 1762, during lengthy gambling sessions, he asked his cook to bring him food that wouldn’t interrupt his game and would en-able him to hold on to his cards. Slices of roast beef were placed between two pieces of toast and the “sandwich” was born! Montagu was also the namesake for the Sand-wich Islands, now known as the Hawaiian Islands. When British Captain Cook became the first European to see Hawaii, he named them after Montagu who had been the sponsor of his voyage and was the First Lord of the Ad-miralty.

• On an ordinary day during the Great Depression, the butcher shop delivered beef rather than hot dogs to Pat Olivieri’s Philadelphia hot dog street cart. Olivieri used the beef for his own lunch by slicing it thin and grilling some onions along with it, then put it on one of his hot dog buns. When a passing cab driver smelled it, he or-dered one and before long, most of Philly’s cab drivers were stopping by. In the years following, Olivieri added cheese, and the famous Philly Cheese Steak was officially invented.

• Thanks to John Harvey Kellogg of cereal fame, the aver-age child will consume 1,500 peanut butter sandwiches by the time high school graduation is reached. Kellogg was the first person to obtain a patent for the process of making peanut butter. Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich was peanut butter and banana.

• A bunch of bologna? According to Kraft Foods, about 2.19 billion Oscar Mayer bologna sandwiches are eaten every year. Do the math — that’s 69 sandwiches every single second.

• A 17-year-old Connecticut youth hoping to become a medical doctor changed the way we eat sandwiches in 1965. Fred DeLuca was trying to figure out how to pay for his education when a family friend loaned him $1,000 to go into partnership in a submarine sandwich shop. Bridgeport, Connecticut, was the site of the first Subway in August of that year. Today there are more than 34,000 Subways around the globe, and DeLuca is on Forbes magazine’s list of the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth of about $1.8 billion.

• No matter what you call it — submarine, hoagie, poor boy, torpedo, hero or grinder — it’s all the same. It’s a sandwich on a long oblong roll stacked with meats and cheeses. During World War II, Benedetto Capaldo’s New London, Connecticut, deli received a call from the U.S. Navy’s Groton submarine base for 500 hero sandwiches. It was the first of many orders, and the employees be-gan calling the sandwiches “subs” because of where they were headed. During World War I, Italian workers at a Philadelphia shipyard named Hog Island brought large cold cut sandwiches with them to work. The workers were nicknamed “hoggies,” and soon the name of their lunch was modified to hoagie. It’s a Poor Boy in St. Louis and a Po’ Boy in New Orleans.

• The Muffaletta sandwich is a New Orleans specialty made on a round loaf of Italian bread, typically called a “muff,” filled with salami, ham, Provolone cheese and a hearty spread of olives, pimientos, garlic, onions and capers.
