by Kathy WolfeWhat was your favorite candy when you were growing up? Take a nostalgic look back at the history behind some of the early varieties you may have enjoyed, many of them long gone but not forgotten.• Thefirst candy to combinemilk choco-late, marshmallow, peanuts and caramel was the Goo Goo Cluster, introduced in 1913 and sold unwrapped from large glass candy jars in the drug store. When a regular customer mentioned that the candy was “So good, people will ask for it from birth,” the creator named his confection afterthefirstsoundsmadebyhisnewbornson,“Goo Goo!” • The invention of America’s first can-dy machine, a lozenge cutter in 1847, got the NECCO wafers their start. The familiar pastel candies were sold for over 50 years before they were given their name, an acronym for the New England Confectionery Company that produced them. The same company introduced conversa-tion hearts in 1866, dubbing them “motto hearts” and printing such messages as “Be Good,” “Be True” and “Kiss Me.” The phrases have been updated in recent years, adding “Call Me,” “Fax Me” and “Email Me.” In 2011, NECCO added “Tweet Me” to the list of mottos.• It’s likely that nearly every child inAmericahasatsometimereceivedaball-shapedlollipop from the bank teller. These little pops, known as Dum Dums, have been around since 1924 when they were introduced by the Ak-ron Candy Company. Sales manager I.C. Bahr namedthepop, figuringDumDumwasawordanychildcouldsay.Sevenoriginalflavorswereintroduced, with many added and deleted over the years, including the famous Mystery Flavor. The Mystery Flavor changes regularly since it is a blend of the tail end of one batch and the begin-ning of the next, whatever they may be.• RememberChuckles? These sugar-coat-ed jelly candies have been around since 1921, when a Chicago marshmallow manufacturer in-troducedthem.Thefive-flavoredstripofcandieswaswidelyadvertisedwiththeslogan“5flavors– 5 cents.”• There’s nothing like pouring straightsugar down your throat, which is what we did with Pixy Stix, a powdered sugar packaged in a drinking straw. It started out as a drink mix in the late 1940s called Frutol, but since kids seemed to prefer the straight powder, Pixy Stix made their debut in 1952. • The chocolate-covered, crunchy peanutbutterbar5thAvenuewas the1938brainstormof William Luden, who is more famous as the creatorofLuden’scoughdrops..• Backinthe1950swhenJamesDeanandMarlon Brando looked cool with their cigarettes rolled up in their T-shirt sleeves, candy ciga-rettes were all the rage with kids. It seems that candy makers actually worked with the

tobacco companies to help attract young smok-ers!Althoughtheoriginalcandycigswiththeir“lit” red tip are long gone, they are now repro-duced but, we hope, with a different goal. Some folks who have quit smoking pass out packs to friends on the anniversary of their last cigarette. • Thoselittlehollowtubesofblacklicorice coated with pastel-colored candy were known as Snaps. They appeared at candy coun-tersforthefirsttimearound1930andcanstillbefoundatspecialtycandyshops.You’llhavealittlemoretroublefindingwaxlips,introducedin the early 1900s, which could be chewed into awaxy,cherry-flavoredgum.Ifyoudidn’tlikethe lips, vampire fangs and moustaches were also available.• ThePittsburgh-basedD.L.ClarkCom-pany had a hit in 1917 with a chocolate-covered honeycomb of ground, roasted peanuts, simply called Clark Bar. This confection became so popular with U.S. troops stationed overseas in World War I, it became a giant sensation back at home as well. The same company produced the Zagnut candy bar beginning in 1930, a crunchy peanut butter bar covered in toasted coconut. The word “zigzag” became popular inthe1930s,andit’sbelievedthat’swherethename originated. • Manychildrenspenttheirallowanceonthe caramel Slo Poke suckers, because accord-ing to the familiar jingle, “Get yourself a Slo Poke, it lasts all day!” If you were a chocolate fan, you could purchase the similar Black Cow.

• Howaboutourpreferredchewinggums?Threeofouroldfavorites,BlackJack,Beemansand Clove were discontinued years ago, but the CadburyAdamsCompany,whichownsthefor-mulas, cooks up a batch of each every couple ofyears.Thelicorice-flavoredBlackJackgumwasthefirstflavoredguminAmerica.Backinthe late 1800s, an Ohio physician Dr. Edward E. Beeman marketed a gum of pepsin powder and chicle, designed to aid digestion. Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager made Beemans gum fa-mousbychewingastickbeforeeveryflightforgood luck. In fact, the antacid qualities of pepsin made the gum popular with pilots for reducing stomachagitationinflight.Clove gumwasfirstmanufactured in 1914 byThomasAdams.LegendhasitthatClovegrewin popularity during Prohibition because its strong smell masked the odor of illegal alcohol on the breath. Chicago’s Williamson Candy Store producedand sold chocolate back around 1920. One of their young customers hung around the estab-lishment so much, before long the employees wereaskinghimtodolittleoddjobs,“Oh,Hen-ry,couldyoudothis?”and“Oh,Henry,willyoubring me that?” Soon after, their newest confec-tionwasnamedtheOhHenrybar.***

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.

DEAR DR. DonohUE: Please advise about the Gardasil vaccine. My granddaughter just turned 18..Herdoctorispushingthevaccineforherandfor her just-turned-14 sister. I value your common-sense approach to medical issues. What do you rec-ommend? --

AnSWER: Without any hesitation, I recommend wholeheartedly the vaccine for protection against thehumanpapillomavirus. It’sthevirusthatcausescervical cancer. Gardasil protects against the most common strains of cancer-causing papillomavirus, strains 16 and 18.This vaccine is a medical breakthrough. Never has there been a vaccine for protection from any cancer. The recommendation suggests the vaccine be given when a girl is 11 or 12, but it can still be given up to age 26.For best effectiveness, it should be given before a girl has had any sexual encounters. The human pap-illomavirus is extremely widespread, and exposure to the virus before the vaccine has been given less-ensthevaccine’sabilitytoprotectagainstthevirusand the cancer it causes.A second papillomavirus vaccine is also on themarket.It’scalledCervarix.

Pomegranates are a very seasonal fruit often used in decorating at Christmas time due to their bright red color and ability to last without being refrigerated. They are rich in nutrients and the juice is widely seen in the markets. They take a lot of patience to get the seeds out of the shell and everyone has a system. I like doing it in a bowl of watersotheseedssinkandthemembranesfloat.Well woth the effort. Here are two guacamolerecipes that use the seeds and are a great treat

Pomegranate guacamole

4 ripe avocados (2 pounds total)1cupfinelychoppedwhiteonion2 fresh serrano chiles, finely chopped (2 table-spoons), including seeds2 tbsp fresh lime juice, or to taste3/4 cup pomegranate seeds (from 1 pome- granate)1/2 cup chopped cilantro

1. Coarsly mash avocados in a mixing bowl with a fork leaving some chunks.2.Add lime juice, onion, jalapeno, garlic, saltand pepper. Stir well. 3. Fold in tomato, Pomegranate seeds and ci-lantro4. Serve immediately or place plastic wrap di-rectly on top of guacamole. Mixture may be re-frigerated but should be served at room tempera-ture. Make two three hours ahead to enhance the flavors.ServewithWhiteCornorFlourTortillachips.

Mango Variation

For a great variation and a real treat add 3/4 cup diced fresh Mango. LeavetheAvacadoin larger chunks and this will be the talk of your party. Hint:TryPlantainChips for added tropical taste.
