Q: I found a ceramic cat's head in a junk shop in Dallas, and I am not quite sure what it was used as. It obviously mounted on the wall, and the cat's mouth has a small hole. -- Betty, Spring Branch, Texas

A: You have a string holder, an item often found in kitchens throughout the 1930s and '40s. The one in my grandmother's kitchen featured a monkey design. Values vary depending on style and condition, but often sell in the $20 to $45 range.

• • •Q: I recently inherited a collection of books from

a distant relative who was a professor of literature at a major university. Although several of the books are extremely interesting, I am curious about one in particular: "Prufock and Other Observations" by T.S. Eliot. It was published in London in 1917 and appears to be a first edition. -- Susan, Helena, Mont.

A: This was T.S. Eliot's first book. According to "Collected Books: The Guide to Values" by Allen and Patricia Ahearn (Putnam Press), your book, if it is,

Mystery Cat

indeed, a first edition and in decent shape, is worth in the $8,500 to $10,000 range.

• • •Q: My grandmother was Canadian, and I found a

commemorative plate in her estate. It was issued in 1927 and is the Canadian Jubilee issue. The identifica-tion mark indicates that it was made by Wedgwood and Sons and imported by Nerlich & Company of Toronto. Do you have any idea of how much it is worth? -- Stan, Providence, R.I.

A It took a little effort to track down information about this plate. After searching through several guides, I finally found it referenced in "Bergesen's Price Guide of British Ceramics" by Victoria Bergesen, who indi-cates it is worth about $100 USD.

• • •Q: About 10 years ago, I found several Pez dis-

pensers in a thrift store. They are all Looney Tune characters: Western Sam, Movie Daffy, Western Bugs Bunny, French Tweetie and African Taz. I paid a buck each for them and hope they have increased in value. -- Sean, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: Your dispensers are each worth in the $3 to $5 range.

• It was Scotsman Bertie Charles Forbes, journal-ist and founder of Forbes magazine, who made the following sage observation: “There is more credit and satisfaction in being a first-rate truck driver than in being a tenth-rate executive.”

• The prospectors of 1849 might not have real-ized it, but you’re more likely to find a 5-carat diamond than a 1-ounce nugget of gold.

• You might be surprised -- and, depending on your tem-perament, terrified -- to learn that bats can fly at speeds up to 60 mph. Some can even reach altitudes of 10,000 feet.

• Coffee beans are actually seeds. The fruit of the cof-fee tree is called a cherry and are said to be delicious. They spoil too quickly to be mar-keted effectively, though, so only the seeds are used.

• Beverly Hills, Calif., is one of the most affluent areas of the country. It was not always such a posh locale, however; in 1920 the population was 674, and most of the land was given over to bean fields.

• All joking aside, those who study such things say that natural blondes tend to have more difficulty driving than those whose hair is of a darker hue -- at night, anyway. The reason? Most natural blondes also have blue eyes, which aren’t as good as brown eyes at shielding out light. This means that blondes tend to be more easily blinded by the headlights of oncoming cars.

Private Carl William (Bill) Edquist August 3, 1910~October 14, 1944

Private Carl William (Bill) Edquist was born August 3, 1910, in Chippewa County, Minnesota, to parents Nels and Mary (Morland) Edquist. The family moved to Edison Township, Swift County, in the fall of 1910, where they lived until 1923. His mother contracted TB and went to the sanitorium in St. Peter in December 1921. Bill lived with his aunt and uncle, Ellen and John Halvorson in Appleton for a number of years and from 1938 until he entered the service, Bill lived and worked at the Martin Nielsen farm in Montevideo.

Bill was inducted into the United States Army on April 24, 1942, and received his training at Camp Bowie, Texas, Camp Pickett, Virginia, and Camp Shelby, Mississippi, before going to New Guinea in January 1944. Bill died at the age 34 on October 14, 1944, at Oro Bay in New Guinea and is buried at Fort McKinley U.S. Military Cemetery in Manila, the Philippine Islands.

At the time of his death he was survived by his father (now deceased); two sisters: Alice Freeman (now deceased) and Mabel Gunderson of Fergus Falls, and three brothers: Clarence (now deceased), Fred (now deceased) and Arthur (now deceased) in the United States Army Air Corps in India; his aunt, Ellen Halvorson and several cousins.

Edquist Street is located on the east side of Appleton, between Gaulke and Bordson Streets.

Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.

• On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman or-ders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it.

• On Nov. 16, 1901, a low-slung car called the “Torpedo Racer” -- basically a square platform on bicycle wheels -- breaks the world speed record for electric cars in Coney Island, N.Y., by going 1 mile down the straight dirt track in just 63 seconds. That’s about 57 mph. Today the world speed record for an electric vehicle is about 245 mph.

• On Nov. 14, 1914, in Constantinople, capital of the Otto-man Empire, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declares an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government, urging his Muslim followers to take up arms against Brit-ain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro.

• On Nov. 15, 1943, Heinrich Himmler makes public an order that Gypsies are to be put on “the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps.” Himmler was determined to prosecute Nazism racial policies, which dictated the elimination of all races deemed “inferior” and “asocial.”

• On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor.
