To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often. Winston Churchill

Change is good. Never one to sit still, I felt it was now time for a fresh coat of paint. Over five years ago, beginning with the January 2014 issue, I took over as editor of ‘The Tidewater Turner’ newsletter. It was with that issue I offered a change in format for both the newsletter headliner and it’s internal content.

While the website has undergone three major changes and a couple of minor changes, this newsletter has continued on. Over the past several month’s I have been making changes to the newsletter’s existing format to test the waters with new font styles, paragraph formatting and headliners. So with this issue we begin.

I certainly hope you enjoy this and future issues. I also welcome your comments and now it is time for you to turn the pages and enjoy. Finally Happy Father’s Day to our dads out there.

And one final note — I am proud to announce that we have won 1st place in AAW’s Chapter Best Newsletter for 2018.

…enjoying the good life in Italy Cliff Guard

Cliff’s notes:

By the time you read this, Cindy and I will be on vacation in Italy.

— Steve, what you have in Connie’s column pretty much covers the meeting.  There wasn’t any business to speak of.

For visitors we had a father/daughter who came together.  I remember from the Virginia Beach Arts & Craft Show the young lady is in high school in

Norfolk and is interested in studying art in college.

Also, there was a gentleman who learned about us from a member he knows.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t smart enough to get any names, but in both cases I think there was some interest.

I will return next month.

Ciao!

I will not be at the Board meeting.  I will be enjoying the good life in Italy.

Date: Tue. May 29, 2018 at 11:25 AM Subject: Congratulations!

Dear Steve: On behalf of the AAW’s Communications Committee, I am very pleased to tell you that the Tidewater Turners of Virginia has been awarded First Place in the contest for Best Chapter Newsletter. All the winners will be listed in the June issue of American Woodturner, and the winners will be announced during the awards banquet at the Portland Symposium, on June 16. The time and attention to detail that you have devoted to the Tidewater Turners of Virginia newsletter are well worth the effort and represent a significant benefit for your members. Congratulations on a job well done. Kindest regards, Kim

Cliff: (Not present)

Since Cliff wasn’t present, Ray continued several discussions from the last board meeting.

Ray congratulated Steve on our newsletter taking first place in the annual AAW newsletter competition.

— Ray asked for a volunteer to coordinate the program to develop a list of club demonstrators and send this list to the other clubs and ask them to do the same. Sam volunteered to be the coordinator.  Ray will assist with getting the list to the other clubs. — Ray asked if we needed to send a survey to the membership asking for feedback on meetings.  There was a general consensus that it would be a good idea and we needed to decide if it should be a paper survey or an on-line survey. — Ray asked that everyone put together a list of possible meeting demonstrators and provide to Bret to assist him in scheduling future meetings.

Bret:

— Discussed the status of upcoming meeting demonstrations.  The list includes: June - Pete Summers - Canes July - Sue Barton Harris (design), Aug - Dick Harrison (Coring), Sept - Rueben Everette (Trivets), Oct - Jay Hartley, Nov - Turnathon. — Proposed that we replace the plexiglas in our lathe shield with a larger piece for $109.  This would be easier to mount and improve the camera view.  Officers and board members were unanimously in favor.

Connie: — Reported that we received only one bid on the Oneway lathe and it met all requirements of the silent auction. The lathe is now considered sold. — Discussed the upcoming club picnic.  It will be held at Myron and Sue’s house on Aug 19th. We’ll need to provide a grill, tents, tables and chairs. — Discussed the member show for this fall.  She has not been successful in getting the d’Art Centre to commit so she is beginning a search for a new location.

Sam: — Presented the financial reports.

Ray: — Presented a plan from Ed Sontag at Woodcraft where new turners that buy a lathe or a substantial amount of tools and supplies would be given a first year’s member-ship in the club. Woodcraft would provide a certificate to the member who would turn it in when submitting an application. Connie would turn in the certificate to Woodcraft for payment. All present were unanimously in agreement. — Mentioned that the Virginia Symposium committee had asked Tidewater Turners to provide a Jet 1642 lathe for demonstrator use during the symposium this fall. The board agreed and Bret volunteered to transport it to Fishersville and asked for some help loading and unloading. — Suggested that the club purchase an amount of exotic woods from Viable Lumber at the symposium for resale to members. All agreed since we get a much reduced price that we can pass along to our members.

Board Minutes

On June 7, 2018, the Tidewater Turners Board of Directors and Officers held their monthly meeting at Pop’s Diner in Chesapeake. Here is a summary of the meeting. by Ray Kallman

3

Page 4: Tidewater Turnerwhere new turners that buy a lathe or a substantial amount of tools and supplies would be given a first year’s member-ship in the club. Woodcraft would provide a

— Discussed the CHKD hospital Christmas gala where we provide two pieces to their silent auction. They have asked for pieces again this year and Ray will be asking two turners to provide pieces.  This will get our name in front of a large community of people with a possibility of future sales to our members.— Stated that he had been contacted by an instructor at St Leo’s College.  She has asked that we do a presentation/demonstration for her folklife class.  He will work out details and report back.— Described public demonstration plans for the remainder of 2018. He noted that the Pork, Pine and Peanut Festival is coming up in July.

Steve:  — Noted that he needed articles for the newsletter. — Asked if any new visitors or new members attended the last meeting. There were no new members. — Proposed the purchase of "green screen” photo editing software to improve photos for our newsletter and website.  The officers and board agreed. — Asked if we should consider nominating club members to AAW to be Chapter Stalwarts? All agreed and suggested that it be done in conjunction with the

Turner of the Year award at the Christmas party.

Jay:  — Contacted the blacksmiths’ club about a large tent for public demonstrations.  He reported back on the pros and cons of buying, assembling, using and storing a large tent.  We will check out the blacksmith’s tent at the Pork, Peanut and Pine festival in July.

Any members who have topics for discussion at the board meeting, Should forward the topic in writing to any officer or board member at least two days prior to the meeting  Amos:  — Reported that he was aware of a large maple tree and said he would get details to Ray to be sent to the club.

Clifton:  (Not present at this meeting)

Chet:  — Provided a status of the mentoring program.  There are no changes since the last board meeting. — Provided a status of the safety program that will become a part of

our meetings.  He will start the program in July with members discussing safety issues.

Art: — Suggested that the officers and board consider putting the proceeds from the Oneway lathe sale in an interest bearing account like a certificate of deposit. The board was in favor but will have to check out limitations for handling interest since we are a 501.c(3) non-profit.

Pete Summers: — Reported on the inventory of tools and lathe accessories owned by the club but not used.  He proposed that we sell them at club meetings or otherwise at half the retail value.  This included the two jet mini-lathes that need work. After discussion the officers and board decided that we can start by listing them in the newsletter and working up a program to sell them. — Discussed the size of the roll-around lathe shield used for meetings.  He suggest we shorten it so that it’s easier to maneuver in the store.

April 25, 2018 Hello Sam: It's important that I take a moment to send my personal thanks to you for the work you put into organizing and managing your chapter's activities. And on behalf of the AAW Board and everyone in the headquarters office, we express our deep appreciation for the ongoing support you give to AAW.  Based on renewal rates and the personal stories that reach us, it's clear that the best way to keep people at their lathes and enthusiastic about woodturning is though engagement at the local chapter level together with the AAW's educational services.A year has passed since we launched the limited time, half price AAW membership offer to chapter members who had never been AAW members. We viewed the promotion as a worthwhile and successful undertaking. Over that three-month period, 900 people took advantage of the discount and joined AAW. Now, as their membership renewals come due, I request your support to help us encourage them to stay involved with AAW. All I ask is for you to offer a friendly reminder about renewing with AAW during an upcoming chapter meeting. And if your chapter has a website and/or newsletter, a reminder using those channels would also be extremely helpful.By mid-summer we will let you know how many overall renewals we obtain. Thank you for any efforts you provide to getting word out about renewing with AAW.  Warmly,

Phil McDonaldExecutive Director 5

Martin had just received his brand new drivers license. The family troops out to the driveway, and climbs in the car, where he is going to take them for a ride for the first time. Dad immediately heads for the back seat, directly behind the newly minted driver."I'll bet you're back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front passenger seat teaching me how to drive," says the beaming boy to his father.

"Nope," comes dad's reply, "I'm gonna sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like you've been doing to me all these years."

Chainsaw Sharpening, Maintenance, and Safety Tips Reprint with permission from SuncatcherStudio.com By Bill Rosener1. Follow the 5-foot radius rule. When working with chain saws a good rule of thumb is to not allow anyone helping within a 5-foot radius when starting or cutting. Helpers should also wear appropriate hearing and eye protection. Helpers should not hold wood while it is being cut.2. Make sure your chain saw is properly equipped with a chain catcher, a front hand guard, and a

chain brake. The chain catcher is a guard which is designed to protect the operator if a chain should break or derail. The front hand guard and chain brake are typically integrated together. They are designed to stop the chain in fractions of a second. The chain brake can be either manually activated or can be activated by the inertia of a kickback force.3. Be careful when operating a chainsaw. On the average, 28,000 injuries and deaths occur annually in the U.S. This makes chainsaws one of the most dangerous hand tools which can be purchased. Unfortunately, this figure is just the “reported” accidents.

So be extra carefully when operating a chainsaw. Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/.4. Beware of kickback. Kickback is one of the common causes of chainsaw accidents. It occurs when the tip of the bar touches an object. This causes the bar to quickly kick up and back towards the operator.

By placing the thumb around the top handle AND operating the chainsaw at a high throttle setting kickback can be reduced.5. Be extra careful when cutting wood on top of a pile. The probability of a chainsaw kickback increases when cutting wood on a pile. This is because it is more difficult to know where the tip of the bar is located. The tip of the bar might hit a hidden log causing the saw to jump.

6. Make sure the tension on your chainsaw blade is adjusted correctly. A correctly tensioned chainsaw blade 1) moves freely around the bar without resistance, 2) makes solid contact with the bottom of the bar rail, and 3) snaps back into its original position if the chain is pulled down from the bar and released. If the drive tabs on the bottom come out of the bar groove, then the chain is too loose.

Turning Tips If you use cyanoacrylate (CA) glue, commonly known as “superglue” for crack / gap filling, make sure the glue is completely dry before turning the lathe on. Sometimes a surface skin can form but the glue beneath can still be liquid. Once it sticks to your visor, it is virtually impossible to remove cleanly.

You were wearing a visor weren’t you?

Safe

ty

…There comes a time when one needs to reduce a huge log into a manageable size for the lathe. Here are 14 tips you need to consider when using your chainsaw. Editor

12

Page 13: Tidewater Turnerwhere new turners that buy a lathe or a substantial amount of tools and supplies would be given a first year’s member-ship in the club. Woodcraft would provide a

Adjustments to the tension on a chainsaw should be performed when the chain has cooled. If the tension is set when the chain is hot, then the chain will most likely be too tight once the chain has cooled. 7. Know the signs of a dull chain. A chain might be getting dull when sawdust and smoke are created when cutting rather than large chips. Similarly, a dull chain will heat up, causing the chain to stretch and loosen.Likewise, if your chainsaw pulls to one side while cutting, it might be time to sharpen the chain. Another indication the chain is getting dull is when you find yourself pushing on the saw rather than the saw self-feeding into the wood. 8. Know how to sharpen a chainsaw. I have found the easiest and quickest way to sharpen my chains is using a rotary tool (Dremel). This allows me to sharpen a chain without first having to remove it from the chainsaw. To sharpen a chain, I first insert either an abrasive or diamond sharpening stone into the Dremel. I then run the sharpening stone back and forth making contact with the teeth. While doing this, I try to maintain the 25-30 degree angle on the teeth. Personally, I sharpen all the teeth pointing in one direction. I then rotate the chainsaw 180 degrees and sharpen the remaining teeth. I always

try to take the same number of passes on each teeth.9. Consider using vegetable oil-based lubricants for the bar and chain. While traditional bar and chains oils were petroleum-based, some newer alternatives use vegetable oil-based lubricants. The vegetable oils are bio-degradable and have fewer environmental drawbacks.10. Avoid using regular motor oil. Most chainsaw operating manuals, do not recommend using regular motor oil because it is missing the “high-tack” additive that helps ensures the oil does not sling off the chain.

Chainsaw types include: Echo, Husqvarna, Stihl, Craftsman, Kobalt, Black and Decker, Worx, Homelite, and Poulan Pro 11. Understand that oil is mixed with the gas on 2-cycle gas chainsaws to lubricate the engine. The “oil reservoir” only lubricates the bar and chain.12. Remove all the fuel in the chainsaw, before storing for several months. It is also recommended to purge all the fuel from the engine, by allowing

the chainsaw to idle until all the fuel in the system has been used up. Otherwise, the 2-cycle fuel can turn to lacquer and clogs the ports in the carburetor.13. Realize a bandsaw will typically yield more lumber than a chainsaw. If trying to maximize the yield from a given log, a chainsaw may not be your best approach. A band saw will typically yield up to one third more lumber from a given log than from using a chainsaw. Many band sawmills have a 1/8” (3 mm) thick kerf. This is half the width of typical chainsaw.14. Know how to determine the pitch of a chain. When purchasing a new chain, you need to know: A) the number of drive lengths, B) the thickness of the drive links (i.e., gauge), and C) the pitch of your chain. The pitch describes how close together links are on the chain. The pitch is equal to the distance between any 3 rivets divided by two. Assuming the value of “X” in the image below is 3/4” then the “pitch” of the chain illustrated would be 3/8”.
