Spring 2013Tidewell Hospice
Tidewell Honors Achieves Level-4 StatusSince Tidewell developed Honors in 2008, its commitment to provide the highest quality care and support for military veterans and
their families has remained steadfast. That commitment has been recognized again, with Honors recently named a Level-4 partner in
the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) “We Honor Veterans” program – the highest status achievable.
The pioneering program of NHPCO in collaboration with the Department of Veterans A"airs is focused on maximizing services for
veterans with respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment. The overall goal is to foster a more peaceful
end-of-life experience for all veterans by better addressing their speci#c needs and concerns.
Tidewell achieved Level-3 recognition in February 2012, and in a recent email, NHPCO con#rmed and congratulated Tidewell for
reaching its ultimate goal:
“Congratulations on achieving We Honor Veterans Partner Level 4, the highest recognition of this exciting program! Your latest report
re$ects your organization’s continuing commitment and dedication to ensuring veterans have access to quality end-of-life care, ap-
preciated by all of us at NHPCO and the hospice community at large.”
Requirements for each level include:
Level 1: Provide veteran-centric education for sta" and volunteers, and identify patients with military experience Level 2: Build organizational capacity to provide quality care for veterans Level 3: Develop and strengthen relationships with VA medical centers and other veterans’ organizations Level 4: Increase access and improve quality of care for veterans in your community
Only 48 hospices in the U.S. are currently recognized as Level-4 partners, and Tidewell is one of just four in Florida to achieve the status.
Special thanks to all of the volunteers who are active in Honors and help to make it such a successful and valuable program.

In January and early February, Tidewell President and CEO Gerry Radford visited each location for town hall meetings. During these
meetings, Gerry explained how hospices have been and will be impacted by health care reform and the current budget crisis in
Washington. If you were unable to attend one of these meetings, you can visit http://www.hospiceactionnetwork.org for information.
Hospice Action Network is a branch of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization that speci#cally addresses legislation for
hospices. Of speci#c interest is the link to reimbursement and policy resources. You will also #nd links to legislation that NHPCO sup-
ports. If you are on Facebook or Twitter, there are links to follow related feeds on the page for up-to-the-minute information.
MARY BODNER MAKES THE TIDEWELL DIFFERENCECongratulations to Volunteer Coordinator Mary Bodner, who was
recently named the winner of the Tidewell Di"erence Award, our or-
ganization’s employee-of-the-month recognition program. Mary was
selected in voting by her peers, based on the following nomination:
“The change to Allscripts was a huge one for the Volunteer Depart-
ment. We were one of the #rst groups trained in May and faced major
changes; including now being active care planners with increased
responsibility for documenting in the electronic medical record (EMR).
After training, Mary proved to be an invaluable resource for our
department. She took it upon herself to provide one-on-one train-
ing with department members during the week prior to go-live. This
involved Mary traveling to all sites while also keeping up with her
current job duties that involve assigning more than 60 volunteers per
month to her three interdisciplinary teams. Mary also volunteered to
enter the names of more than 1,000 volunteers into Allscripts. She did
this mostly on her own and #nished the task within a week; again in
addition to her normal job duties.
A colleague in the department was out with a serious illness during the training period and Mary also served as that person’s trainer
for the program. Without Mary, our department would not be functioning as well as we are with the EMR. She truly has gone above
and beyond, without being asked, and deserves to be recognized for her e"orts.”
The Tidewell Di"erence program honors one colleague monthly for setting an example for others by exhibiting one or more of Tide-
well’s Core Values – compassion, integrity, respect, communication, development, stewardship, integriy and teamwork.

Volunteers, staff and community members gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Treasures Thirft Shop in Venice on Jan. 18.
TIDE WELL CUTS THE RIBBON ON TREASURES IN VENICEAlthough the store opened its doors to shoppers on Dec. 20, 2012, Tidewell celebrated the o%cial grand opening of its newest Trea-
sures Thirft Shop with a Venice Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 18.
The 5,600-square-foot store, located at 523 U.S. Hwy. 41 Bypass N. in Venice’s Bird Bay Plaza, is stocked with donated clothing, books,
household items, framed artwork, furniture and more. And just as with the Bradenton store, all pro#ts from sales are used to help fund
Tidewell Hospice services for patients and their loved ones.
“We opened our #rst Treasures store in November 2010, and it’s been a great success thanks to the many generous individuals who
donate items and our enthusiastic shoppers, ” Tidewell President and CEO Gerry Radford said. “We expect the Venice store to be just
as successful, and it’s another valuable way to support our mission by generating additional revenue to help us continue to provide
outstanding programs and services for our patients and their families.”
Store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
