The next step will hopefully happen shortly and that is to get the exterior wall rebuilt/framed in. Finish work will be put on hold until the task force formed by the Trustees to help guide the process makes a few decisions. The first deci- sion involves returning the bathroom as it was or to leave out the dividing wall originally a part of the bathroom, to make it truly wheel-chair accessible. While the north bathroom does have grab bars it is not big enough for a wheel chair. Further decision to be made is the carpeting. The insurance has agreed to replace not only the narthex carpet but also the sanctuary car- pet. (We lost about three feet of the south run- ner and it simply cannot be matched.) Since the carpeting will be replaced, the task force is considering whether to remove a couple of pews to create more space particularly up front and possibly to create an aisle in the very back so that people can transverse from side to side without having to go out into the narthex. Also related to this is the current narthex carpet extends through the breezeway to the fellowship hall and west to the education wing. The task force is considering whether to replace all the carpet as there is dam- age (not from the accident to that carpet- you might have noticed what looks like a chemical burn just in front of the Youth Feetwall.) Of course the insurance will not cover that part as the doors mark a clear separation between narthex and breezeway. The task force is also discussing updating the north bathroom, replacing the exterior glass doors in the entrance to the narthex, (something that has been in the works for a while) and the exterior brickwork that has already been removed. Since it is very unlikely the existing brick can be matched, are there other options (no, vinyl siding is not being considered) like possibly going with stone or other facing material that might be different but still complement the existing brick or the white stone between the windows. These decisions will take some time. The task force is working diligently with an understanding of extra costs incurred by some of these deci- sions, the inconvenience of being without a sec- ond bathroom and the unsightly temporary wall. If you have any concerns or questions feel free to talk to Bill Huelle, Jim Dorn or Pastors Chris. Come Celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord! CHURCH CONSTRUCTION: WORK IN PROGRESS

Jim Dorn and Bill Huelle have been in contact with the insurance companies and everything is on track with the damage claim.

The task

force is considering whether to replace all the carpet as there is dam- age (not from the accident to that carpet- you might have noticed what looks like a chemical burn just in front of the

Youth ‘Feet’ wall.) Of course the insurance will not cover that part as the doors mark a clear separation between narthex and breezeway.

The task force is working diligently with an understanding of extra costs incurred by some of these deci-sions, the inconvenience of being without a sec-ond bathroom and the unsightly temporary wall. If you have any concerns or questions feel free to talk to Bill Huelle, Jim Dorn or Pastors Chris.

Many of you will read this just ahead of celebrating Easter. The big event will happen April 1

st and this

newsletter will hopefully be mailed by then.

But I want to ask this question. “Having celebrated the Big Event--Now What? Jesus even said, “It is finished.” What more is there? Forgive my attempt at cynicism here, but I do want to catch your atten-tion and raise the question, how do we finish?

Jesus’ ministry on earth is finished and he now sits at the right hand of the Father. The work of salvation that God began in creation and completed through Jesus’ death and resurrection is now in the capable hands of the Spirit. Jesus indeed finished, and finished well, but what about us?

Each Easter celebration should remind us that while Jesus’ race is completed, our race goes on and indeed with each and every Easter is the encouragement to begin the race anew. Like with Christmas, the culture around us hypes the coming of the holi-day. Then come December 26

th or Easter Monday, the decorations come down and

the next big sales event is touted. Take a look at your Church calendar, you will notice with both Christmas and Easter, the holiday, or more correctly, Holy Day, BEGINS the season and does not end it. No the race for us is not over, and this intentional placing of the Holiday/Holy Day at the beginning of Season of Easter, with the empty tomb, should remind us, Easter has just begun.

So we understand what the writer of Hebrews meant, when he said, “Therefore, having so great a cloud of witnesses let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

Think of Easter as your starting place and then being cheered on by all who have gone before us, consider how to finish well.

Have a Blessed Easter!

Pastor Chris

HOSPITALIZED? PLEASE LET US KNOW If you are hospitalized, please contact (or have a friend or family member contact) the church office and let us know so that we can visit and pray with you. Providing pastoral care is an important part of our ministry, however, we cannot visit if we don’t know, so please don’t hesitate to call or email the church office, so that we can be there for you. Thanks! Pastors Sheryl and Chris

COUNCIL MINUTES SUMMARY March 12, 2018

Finance – Grant Hinze: Started February with $15,164 and ended with $17,158. Contingency Acct which includes a transfer of $500 now has $7207 in it. To avoid confusion with the new Outreach Board, the line item in the budget presently named ‘Community Outreach’ under the Social Ministry Board will be renamed ‘Local Ministry’. Board of Worship and Music: Everything is ready for Holy Week and Easter. Board of Outreach – Mary Jo Huelle: First quote the Board received for internal signage was a little pricey – slightly over $400. Talked to Shane Wilson of Scottsbluff Screen Printing and he of-fered to donate all signage we are looking at. Had discussion about our Mission Statement and how to highlight it. Also looking at updating logo. Will wait to do signage until logo has been updated. Board decided to give Brooke Samuelson a $50 Starbuck’s gift card as a thank you for taking the pic-tures for the pictorial directory. Still much work to be done by the Board to get the Directory done. Easter invitation cards are done and ready to be handed out. Board of Social Ministry – Will Voss/Jack Martin: Getting ready to serve the Lenten meal on Wednesday night – soup supper. Donations will be going to ELCA World Hunger Relief. Will be discussing fund raiser for the Bridges To Hope Prison Ministry. Board of Stewards – Pat Smith: The Wednesday evening Lenten offerings will be split between Lakota Lutheran Center and the Contingency fund. Still waiting for Time and Talent sheets to be turned in. Caring Ones (dollar bills placed in the offering plate each week) are being split between Cat Pack/Pup Pack, Lakota Center and World Hunger. Board of Trustees – Bill Steele/Jim Dorn: Our Insurance sent us a check for the damage that was done to the church – were not sure why Ms.Leider’s insurance was not the one writing the check instead of our own insurance. Jim & Bill were going to talk with the Insurance Company to clarify things. Should be replacement cost value instead of actual cash value minus depreciation minus deductible. Working on getting quotes for repairing the building to what it was without any improve-ments. Will need to get at least 2 bids on each phase of the repairs. The Trustees have formed a task force to discuss possible remodeling projects since we will be doing repairs anyway. Bill Huelle will chair this group. Per constitution, if project goes more than $10,000 over budget, the decisions need to go before the congregation for approval. Sanctuary carpeting has been included in the repair estimates – may need to replace the remaining carpeting. Replace front doors for $6,800 similar to the existing doors. Bill Huelle presented a plan for a set of windows to be placed in the south wall of the narthex that would form the shape of a cross. The cost for this is less than $1000. Neal Blomenkamp made a motion to approve the addition of a glass cross in the remodel/Jack Martin 2

nd – Accepted. Vote passed.

Pastors: Busy with Lent – Good response to the Road Signs of Lent series for our Lenten Wednesday Evening Worship Services. Lots of hospital visits. Meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer Next Council Meeting: April 9, 2018

A complete copy of the Council Minutes is available in the church office.

When a child is baptized, we, as the people of God, promise to support and pray for them in their new life in Christ. Your presence on this special day is one way you can fulfill the promise we as a church made to God. We rejoice that Katelyn Newton and Ashland Todd will be affirming the Baptismal promises made for them at their baptisms. Please include these youth in your prayers and come celebrate with them on April 29

All the members of Calvary are invited to donate toward our mission pro-ject for the month of April. In April we will be taking donations for a Bakeless Bake Sale. Please note the envelopes in your Narthex mailbox. All money donated goes to Mission Projects that we choose (one local, one on the larger community, and one globally). So please put in an amount you would spend baking an item or buying an item from a real bake sale. Thank you for your support.

Its Spring!

Its spring and the garden is changing its clothes, putting

away its dark winter suits, its dull scarves and drab brown

overcoats.

Now, it wraps itself in green shoots, slips on blouses sleeved with pink and white blossom, pulls on skirts of daffodil and primrose, snowdrop socks and purple crocus shoes.

Then dances in the sunlight. By John Foster

The Stephen Ministry Symbol Our Stephen Ministry program here at Calvary continues on, even though we don’t hear too much about it. We are working with members of the congregation when a need arises. As a reminder of what the Stephen Ministry program stands for, the logo helps us to understand its purpose. The logo is a simple symbol made up of a broken person and a whole person superimposed on a cross. The dominant element is the cross which stands between the broken and the whole person. It reminds us that God is the one who actively transforms broken people into whole people. Jesus Christ provides the purpose and power to transform lives. The symbol provides the motivation for caring ministry done by our Stephen Ministers. The circle reminds us that we are all connected together and that God’s love is never ending. If you would like to know more about how a Stephen Minister could care for you, please contact Nancy Steele (632-7558) or (641-7619) or Marsha Bueide (635-1469).
