TIDIShield EyeSplash Zero – The Program

TIDIShield EyeSplash Zero – Program Objectives – TIDI View

• Accelerate Assembled Eyewear Dispenser sales– Gain quicker facility/system-wide adoption of

TIDIShield dispensing systems• Requires preference change from re-usable eyewear

among existing eyewear users• Requires behavior change among current occasional or

non-users of eyewear users

– Elevate TIDI’s partnership with facility/system to a more strategic relationship

– Improve caregiver safety

Program Rationale/Background

• Eye splash incidents among healthcare workers during the course of patient care and the related contamination of the caregiver with the potential for serious infection:– Can be traumatic for the caregiver affected by the splash– Are costly for the hospital

• Estimated $3K - $15K (up to $100K) per event• Estimate average # events per year per facility : 40 – 50

– $240K - $300K per year if no infections

• TIDI is offering a “simple” process improvement program to addresses this issue.

Program Rationale/Background

• Caregivers currently have a protection routine that includes donning gloves and facemasks– Eyewear usage is not standard– Three basic behavior by caregivers regarding eyewear:

• Use Disposable eyewear • Use Reusable eyewear

– May consider prescription glasses sufficient protection

• Do not use/occasionally use eyewear

• TIDI has learned that one reason for this is lack of accessibility to the safety products– “Clean” eyewear is not currently as readily available at point of use

as gloves and masks are.• The implication: Like masks and gloves, disposable eyewear

should be easily accessible at point of use.

Program Rationale/Background

• Additionally, TIDI sponsored a study and learned that re-usable eyewear also poses infection risk– 75% of the time the re-usable eyewear still carried

pathogens after post-procedure processing. • The implication: Like masks and gloves,

eyewear should be used and disposed after each patient/procedure.

TIDIShield EyeSplash Zero – Program Objectives for a Hospital

• This Safety Risk improvement program will improve Hospital A worker safety and lower overall system costs– Reduces the incidence of eye splash contamination

to the Hospital A healthcare worker during the course of patient care.

– Reduces the trauma to caregivers who receive associated

TIDIShield EyeSplash Zero – Key Metrics – Hospital View

• Primary - Measure success by tracking eye splash incident reductions.

• Secondary - If the data is available and trackable, measure success by tracking follow-up testing and administrative costs related to a splash incident.

Four Key Program Elements for Hospital

• Education• Ease-of-Use• Incident tracking • Program template

Key Program Elements

Education: • Working together, Hospital A and TIDI will

provide a system-wide on-line education and CE credit opportunity

• Goal: Better inform clinicians about:– the potential risks associated with inadvertent eye

splash– the importance of protecting against splash

incidents– how and when to use protective eyewear

Key Program Elements

Ease-of-Use: • Goal: Make caregiver compliance easier• Hospital A will install the proprietary TIDIShield

Grab ‘n Go disposable eyewear dispensing systems – Install where masks/gloves are donned to make

uncontaminated eyewear available at point of use.

Key Program Elements

Incident tracking: • Hospital A and TIDI will establish goals for

splash incident reduction and track results.– Most hospitals are already tracking eye splash

incidents– TIDI will help manage the data tracking process

where possible

Key Program Elements

Program template: • TIDI has created a program template for Hospital A use• TIDI will partner with Hospital A to:– co-brand the program– create password protected on-line access– provide in-service education– compile and track results

• Hospital A already tracks these incidents– The program will allow Hospital A to provide focus to an

area where safety can be improved easily by adding eyewear to their protection routine.

Benefits of the Program to the Hospital

• Reduced eye splash contamination incidents• Improved caregiver safety• Turn-Key program leveraging data you already track• No consulting fees• Opportunity for educational messaging and CE credits• Expect net system-wide savings• Accreditation: Designed to meet process

improvement requirements of 3rd party auditors (eg, The Joint Commission - TJC)
