What’s up? Before or after? Most probably not in the heat of the moment, although one or two catalogues might find their way outside. Ending up as seat pads or stove fuel. But, our guess is that mentally, you’re already heading for a winter of escapades. Looking for something to color the snow with, something to let you balance with ease through the caprices of nature. Where the action is. And when there is action – be it the sky collapsing over the base camp, your heart pounding at the brink of a powder slope, the slush and clay of the trail turning you into a piece of modern art, or the riffs of the cover band heating the night – we’ve put all of our experience and enthusiasm into the garments we create, to let your emotions run free. So pull your hood up, let your skis fall through the rush of the mountain side, toss another gear in and sing along to the chorus: the day is yours to conquer. When standing there, all exhausted, eyes sparkling with life, it won’t be the clothes that frame the moment. We’ll simply have to swallow our pride. That smile of yours is just impossible to outshine.

THAT SMILE SUITS YOU

Some things are hard to describe in words. We’re not thinking about the adjustable waist or the lumbar plate in the back giving the Rond Pants the perfect comfortable fit. We’re not thinking about the three pockets and the two vent zips at the sides. Nor about snow gaiters on the reinforced leg ends. No, we’re thinking about the sound of skis cutting through fresh snow, the feeling of the warming sun and the laughter of good friend enjoying the run together with you.

ON EXPEDITION WITH FIVE

UNKNOWN MENight in the middle of a steep snowy slope is when it happens. I look down at my cram-pons which get a grip in the icy mix, and am overjoyed. I stupidly smile, breathe, and look up again over the Denali surroundings. Let

me try to explain what we can see. White-clad pointed peaks surround us as far as the eye can see. A layer of fresh snow has settled like icing sugar over the whole landscape. The fog has lifted and revealed the sky’s crazy bright blue color. A light and cold wind lifts ice crystals into the air and makes everything glitter magically in the sunlight. It is so wildly beautifully. And it is so immensely enjoyable to ascend a steep snowy slope. This is mountain climbing. It’s not an extreme sport, it’s an experience sport. That alone is part of the appeal of an expedition. Each moun-tain is a new experience. The snow has another taste, the wind another chill, and the mountain another personality. Many pe-ople have asked me to compare Denali and Everest. You can’t. For me, that’s not what mountain climbing is about. Mountain climbing is about passion, not comparisons. “I think that new experiences are good. It’s got nothing to do with the activity. Just doing something new, whatever it is, is a good thing. I think that new experiences give energy, inspira-tion and development.” But the mountain is really just half of the expedition. The other half is the climbers. This is the biggest expedition with unknown men that I have been on. And it’s just another appeal of an expedition. Not the fact of climbing with men, but the fact that they are unknown. There is no end to the excitement of doing something really tough and enjoyable with people you haven’t met before. Of course, you can feel a bit nervous that you won’t get along. But since we all have our passion for mountains in common, it is rarely an issue. I have taken on an added challenge because men are usually stronger than women, and so I have trained twice as hard for some months

to be able to keep up. In three weeks, the unknown men have become bearded friends. Somehow, you get to know each other in a special and close way when a physical challenge brings you together. And it seems to be particularly true of Denali. Everyone we meet along the way are extrovert, like typical Americans. It may seem superficial to smile at strangers, say hello and be asked how it’s going all the time, but I do think it’s awfully nice. Life is simple. We all agree. Everyone’s first responsibility is to take care of themselves. If everyone takes care of themselves (stay warm, drink enough melted snow, and breathe) we are a safer team. I love the simplicity. For a few weeks life is about keeping warm, eating enough, finding a place to sleep, and walking up steep slopes. We are located so far north that we have 24-hour daylight. But that does not mean it is warm. Keeping warm is a constant challenge as temperatures creep down to as low as -40 degrees in the middle of summer. I give many thankful thoughts to Tierra’s product developer when climbing.

CLIMB HIGH SLEEP LOWClimbing is tough. It is very cold, the pack is very heavy, and somehow, the mountain feels a lot higher than its barely 6,000m. We climb according to the principle ‘climb high sleep low’ to acclimate, and we follow a three day routine. The very first day is the heaviest. We have food and clothes for three weeks with us on the way up. We carry large backpacks which weigh around 25 kilos, and drag a further 35 kilos on a sledge behind us. The sleds seem to have a life of their own behind our backs sometimes. We set up camp and sleep the night. The next day we take some of our pack with us up 500m, dig out a snow hole and put the pack in it, and then mark the spot with a flag so we can find it later. We go down and sleep one more night in the camp below, to then pack up the whole camp the morning after and move to the next camp some 1,000m higher

up. There we build a new camp and spend the night. The mor-ning after, we go back down 500m and collect the equipment we buried the day before. And so we continue camp after camp upwards. We are very lucky with the weather, and we ‘avoid’ taking rest-days. Until we reach the highest camp at about 5,300m. Then the weather turns on us and others with us. The forecast is strong winds for a whole week. The summit, which is only 8 hours away, suddenly feels very distant. We lie in our tents, locked in by the winds, freezing and hovering between sleep, hopefulness and hopelessness. The days’ challenge is going down the toilet. After four nights I wake suddenly to the feeling that so-mething is different. It was no colder than usual, but then I realize what is missing. Sound. After four days of ice cold and strong loud winds, it was finally silent. The canvas was still. I fell asleep again with a smile and with the hope that tomorrow would be the start of a great day.

THE TOPThe great day ended up being a window in the weather for 15 hours. It was all we needed. At six in the morning, we put on every layer of clothing we had, and ate what was left of the food before setting off. It was colder in the shade than ever. The feeling in my fingers and toes vanished immediately, and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get the blood circulation going again. I frantically wiggled my toes and swapped the ice axe in my hands every now and again. Slowly we went towards the top, one step at a time. The last bit went along a narrow snow ridge where we advanced ridge by ridge, tied together with a rope. At one point, the whole team had to stop and wait for one of the members who was fumbling with a snow anchor. I am in a strange position, a bit like the warrior position in yoga, and start to giggle breathless-ly. With some deep breaths, I relax in this position and realize that I am doing yoga 6,100m high!

And then suddenly it’s all over. There is nowhere left above us to climb. We are on North America’s highest peak! The view is so breathtaking that it’s even harder to breath in the thin air. I feel lyrical. But at the same time strangely empty. I am empty of energy, food, feelings and thoughts. But it’s not an unpleasant emptiness. Instead it’s more like a feeling of presence and feeling of absolute calm. Calm and happiness. But we were not there just yet. I try not to see the summit as the goal, but climbing a mountain. 80% of accidents happen on the way down. The goal is to get down. The top is only half way. We have been on the go for 8-9 hours, and need energy to get us down again. We head down in slow motion, and silently thank the sun for being up all night. Once back down at camp, we find that a friend has melted some snow for us and heated it enough to be able to cook some noodles, and give us some energy. I have never eaten such great noodles in such great company! Everyone sits and smiles happily through the noodle steam. It’s not only a fantastic experience to climb Denali. It’s ac-tually just as fantastic to come back down from the mountain. The contrasts are even more apparent. Imagine only seeing the color white for three whole weeks. Imagine smelling nothing other than the smell of sweat. Hearing only the wind, the sound of snowflakes against the canvas, and silence. Imagine not showering for three weeks, and wearing only climbing shoes with steel soles. And so, a short but fantastic flight away, everything is completely different. We land amid color, another light and many sounds. Eve-rything smells stronger than usual. The smell of greenery is mixed with fuel fumes from the small airplane (I have decided to take my pilot license). The taste of a really big American breakfast is overwhelming. It’s as though all your senses are sharper than usual for a couple of days. The feeling of being alive is a little greater.

AKKAhe smell of two-stroke petrol lingers in the air. The sound of the snowmobile that has taken us over Akkajaure – the lake that separates our cabin from Akka mountain – dies away

and in front of us lies a pile of skis, bags and a line marked in the snow. “I mustn’t go any further,” says Christian our local guide. His face is tanned from the strong spring sun and his beard bleached. Around his eyes and nose, the outline can be seen of his sunglasses which constantly sit on his face as protection against the strong spring sun. “Stora Sjöfallet Na-tional Park starts here, and only Samis have the right to drive snowmobiles in here. “I’ll be back to get you in ten hours,” he concludes, and with a sudden movement, he has quickly sat back on the snowmobile, started it up and the smell of fuel once again fills the air. The atmosphere in the group is good but expectant – we have a long day ahead of us with the aim of reaching Stortoppen, the highest point on Akka mountain. The mountain is considered a holy place for Samis, and in Sami mythology, Akka is the goddess who represents all wisdom and wonder in the world.

THE MORNING ROUTINEThe morning routine is always the same: early breakfast, put on the cold ski boots, piece together the harness around your waist, put sun lotion on your face, open up the ventilation on your jacket, drive the snowmobile, and then head up the mountain. Putting on the equipment gets faster with each day, and that feeling when you get home in the evening, tired, hungry and sweaty is satisfying in a way that I rarely expe-rience in the big city. The body is numbly shattered after ten hours’ training but even so, the pain vanishes once the food is served by the person on dinner duty that evening.

TOWARDS THE TOP“The cap”, which is a cloud that often settles around the two thousand sixteen meter high summit – has dispersed in honor of the day, and the April sun rays warm our cold cheeks. The advance from the ice through shady lowlands takes us about two hours. We pass by trees and brushwood before arriving over the tree line into the valley. Nobody in the group knows everyone, but everyone knows someone and when we head

over the mountain formations towards the top, we exchange words, laughter and encouragement to keep the fire alive when strength begins to fail. Every break is a chance to drink some gulps of water, eat some raisins, and exchange words with our new friends, who all share the same passion. We are completely alone in our quest to the mountain summit, and yesterday night’s snowfall has painted over the few tracks from yesterday. The snow is cold and crunchy and when the ski skins meet the surface it creates a sound that slowly makes the brain drop a gear, and puts the problems and obligations of the day to one side. Breathing gets heavier with every step, and soon the earlier chit chat dies down. As one symbiotic being we advance in unison, and let ourselves be slowly rocked into our inner world with the heavy breathing like a background bass. Even though the surrounding environment is desolate, and the majority of Swedes never have or never will visit this Sami land in the heart of Norrland, it’s history affects all Swedes. Akkajaure is Sweden’s largest constructed reservoir, and during the nineteen hundreds it was extended several times, so as to increase capacity. Samis have used the land for rein-deers and taken care of it for hundreds of years. Last century they witnessed the flooding of their land so that other Swedes could use the area as a hydroelectric power reservoir. Tied together on one red rope, we walk in a row and in unison behind Craigh, who has taken on the ungrateful task of leading the chain over the glacier. The rope between us is to prevent falling into crevasses in the glacier, and it must not to be dropped on the ground. With our trodden track behind us, we now have a one hour sweaty ski tour over Akka glacier’s many crevasses ahead of us, and then a further two hours climb with crampons before we reach the summit. The moun-tains don’t look the same as the Swedish mountains I am used to – these are high, barren and much wilder in their nature. The sun moves worryingly fast and our time plan needs to be revised. After a brief debate we decide to make an attempt to reach the summit, despite the fact that we are behind schedule. Everyone in the group is a knowledgeable outdoor person, but in particular, it is comforting that Annelie is with us. In addition to holding the world record for free-diving, she climbed Mount Everest last year. She leads the onward journey towards the top. We disconnect the harness from the rope, pack up our sticky ski skins and fasten our skis onto our rucksacks. Annelie deftly leads the group up the mountain and now with spiky crampons underfoot and ice axe in one hand, the adventure feels even more alive.

THE AKKA CABINFor five days we live and sleep in the desolate Akka cabin. Our lodgings are a simple mountain hut without electricity or running water on the opposite side of the mighty Akka mountain. The only comforts the hut can be proud of, is the bottled gas cooker and the stove made from genuine solid cast iron – straight out of Kiruna. Water is collected from the dug-out well some ten or so steps away from the hut. The inside of the house is covered in unpainted wooden panels, and the walls are decorated with maps and pictures from the area. The cooker is old, the floor scratched up from all the crampons and ski boots, the beds are classic bunks, and the floor surface in the hut is rapidly filled with ropes, axes, rucksacks, clothes and ski boots. In the room next door lives Björn, who looks

Page 41: Tierra FW12 Catalog English

41

after the hut. His duty is to see to it that everything is running as it should out there in the wilds. He is also full of stories and history about the region. The first time he was introduced to the wild nature of Stora Sjöfallet nature reserve was back in the seventies. Together with his greying dog Niak, he takes shorter tours in the days and entertains guests in the eve-nings. Both Björn and the hut breathe history, and therefore contribute to the true feeling of adventure felt as soon as you set foot in the Swedish wilderness.

MORE, MORE, MORE!The last few steps are playfully easy. Suddenly there we are standing at the summit, the sun passed its highest point some time ago, and the orange light from the evening rays creates a magical atmosphere. South of the summit, Sarek Nature Reserve spreads out in all its splendor. The light disappears fast and after a quick cup of coffee and an obligatory group photo, smiling from ear to ear, it’s time for the moment I have been longing for all day – to ski nearly 1,500 vertical meters in virgin snow down steep slopes, rolling fields and complex forests. One by one we start the half-hour long journey back down to Akkajaure where Christian patiently waits for us. I let the others go before me and I can hear their shouts of joy echo between the desolate mountain faces. Then it is my turn. The feeling you get when you can lavish turns on the virgin snow knowing full well that you are never going to cross a single track is almost too much. I think ‘however much I turn I will never be able to ski over all the snow – I want to ski more, more, more!’. The feeling is overwhelming and I also burst into a howl. Maybe there just is no expression that describes the feeling better than a genuine howl straight from the heart, and out into the long valley? Once through the complex forest, I once again smell the two-stroke fuel, and glimpse Christian’s snowmobile in the dusky evening light. Pumped full of adrenalin and endorp-hins and drained of all energy, we end the day where we started. With our equipment laid on the ground behind the line that marks the division between lake and nature reserve. The sun has now fully set and the starlit sky causes tempera-tures to sink rapidly towards minus twenty. Around the lake, the even layer of ice is broken with stone spires shooting up out of it. I ask Christian what the large stones are for when we pass them on the snowmobile. He slows down by one of these majestic pillars and explains that when the lake’s water is tap-ped for the hydroelectric power plant, the water level falls. The spires we can see are usually under the water. “The water level sinks approximately fourteen meters when they have finished draining the water,” he says in a few words before we continue our journey back to the cabin. In the south of Sweden, the leaves on the trees have already started to appear, but up here the spring snow is still cold and crunchy. Our tracks remain like signatures across the mountain the next day when we wake up. For several days we are completely alone when we ascend Akka mountain in the quest for more snow. I have once again discovered a new and fantastic part of Sweden, and the simplicity of the journey has been spiritually purifying – not to mention the fascinating friends I have met. We have all become attached to mother Akka, and we have made ourselves a promise to return next year to greet her again.

AVALANCHESAFETY GUIDE

Snow-capped mountains and cliff faces are familiar surroundings for anyone wearing Tierra clothing. The fact that

climbing and skiing present dangers is also no secret for those of us who regularly frequent mountainous regions. Avalanches are one such danger, but with the right knowledge and attitude, we can still continue to do the things we enjoy without taking too great a risk. For an avalanche to occur, three elements must coincide:

terrain, snowpack and people. We call the model an avalanche triangle.

!TERR

AIN

SNO

WPACK

PEOPLE

TERRAINFor an avalanche to occur, the angle of the slope must be at least 25 degrees. Once we have identified that it is ava-lanche terrain, we should also consider just how prone the terrain is to avalan-ches. Factors such as form, direction and altitude play a significant part in the number of avalanches that occur in an area. It is also important to think about the consequences of an avalanche. Could you be dragged over a cliff, in amongst trees and stones, or could the avalanche bury other people?

SNOWPACKIn order for an avalanche to occur, there must be a weak, fragile layer buried under a harder slab in the snowpack. The most decisive factor that determines whether a weak layer or a hard slab forms is the weather as the snow is falling. Snowfall in calm and cold conditions can, for example, form weak layers. Snow-drifts and snowfall when temperatures are close to zero degrees can, on the other hand, form hard slabs. Unfortuna-tely, it is not as simple as just following the weather conditions when snow falls to be able to determine if there is a risk of avalanches. Other conditions can also weaken or stabilize the snow once it is lying on the ground.

PEOPLEAvalanches can occur far out in the moun-tains when there is not a single person in the surrounding area, but then there are no accidents. Accidents only occur once we are in the area. Unfortunately, know-ledge has not always proven to be what makes a safer skier or climber.

FROM ÅRE LAVINCENTER

Page 43: Tierra FW12 Catalog English

If we use the knowledge we have, it should often be possible to avoid avalanche accidents. It’s our brain playing tricks on us, and we can’t always control this. In our brain, there are a series of functions that slow down our ability to see risks. There are four quite simple examples that I think you will all recognize, that we must really never forget.

POWDER RUSH. You know how the air is alive with excitement in the line for the lift, the morning after a heavy snowfall. All the ‘real’ skiers are standing there, and the competition for the virgin snow soon starts. This is not just a competition about being the first out on the virgin powder. This is something that goes a lot deeper than that. When supply is limited, instinct comes into play. It’s all about getting as much of the product in short supply as possible. To make the example clearer, think about how you behave in a mushroom forest. If you find a glade with golden chanterelles, do you call over your friends so they can pick them too, or do you pick them yourself and later proudly present your basket full of mushrooms? As far as I’m concerned the answer is simple – I would happily pick all the mushrooms myself. It’s exactly the same when it comes to powder snow – when the lifts open and the slopes are untouched, it’s no longer you who does the thinking but the caveman within.

FOLLOW TRACKS. A slope may be untouched for several days but as soon as the first track is made, the slope is skied all over in just an hour or so. People are herd animals. Who goes into an empty coffee shop when there is one packed full of people? Unfortunately, this is no guarantee that you get the best coffee there – the same goes for the slopes. Just because there is a track does not mean that the slope is safe. An avalanche can be triggered after the second, tenth or fiftieth skier. Not knowing who left the first track doesn’t make it any easier. Maybe that person doesn’t know the first thing about snow and avalanches.

OLD HABITS. When you ski the same slope day in day out without anything happening, you can be lulled into a false sense of security even though you know really that the conditions for an avalanche are still there. It’s just like crossing a road without looking because cars never pass by there. But suddenly one day, there you are sitting in a car bumper. For those of us who are on the mountains every day, this is perhaps the one thing we need to constantly remind ourselves of. We must never think – it won’t happen to me.

TUNNEL VISION. How many climbers have died because they have put all focus on the summit, and therefore missed all the signs of approaching danger? The same fever can strike anyone with the determination to reach a goal, go on a special tour, or ski a slope. A good off-piste run can be all that’s needed for people to ignore all the clear warning signs to steer clear.

These human factors are deep rooted and influence us, regard-less how skilled we are. In order to not fall into these traps, we

must be humble with ourselves and our weaknesses. Avalanche safety is not only about knowledge and experience, but just as much about our attitude to what we are doing. Which is why the answer to my question about whether I still want to learn more about avalanches is: yes, because with knowledge comes humi-lity towards both myself and the forces of nature.

TO SKI OR NOT TOFinally we are standing there, by the untouched slope, and are thinking about whether we can set off or not. The more know-ledge, experience and humility we have, the safer our decision will be. Some of the questions we want answers to are:q Is where we are going avalanche terrain? Is the snow stable or not?q Are we ready to ski where we planned? q Do we have enough knowledge?q Do we have the right equipment? In other words; do we satisfy the avalanche triangle?

When we are going to ski off-piste or go climbing, our risk as-sessment of avalanches starts several days before. We read guide books, look at maps, check the internet and weather reports on the TV. We collect a lot of information which helps us create a picture of the snow that is waiting for us out there. The assessment continues when we arrive at the mountain. Once there, we can ask local mountain guides and ski patrols about the situation. The assessment then continues throughout the whole day. We have to think all the time about where we are skiing, how the snow is, and whether we really have the right know-ledge, attitude and equipment to ski there. There is certain equipment we must have so that we can be in an avalanche environment at all: a shovel, probe, transceiver and first aid kit. If there is coverage, then it is really worth having a mobile phone with you. Once we have then chosen our ski run, assessed that the snow is probably stable enough and we are ready to go, we should also minimize the risk and consequences of an avalanche by having three set rules:q Ski one at a time. That way, only one person risks being drag-ged down with the avalanche.q Have an escape route. If an avalanche starts, there is still a chance to get out before it has picked up speed.q Stop at safe spots. Don’t stand under the slope when you have come down, but instead gather all the skiers together at a spot which cannot be reached by an avalanche.

Hopefully, you now have some tips to take with you up into the mountains. I hope you have a good and fun winter all around the world. Anyone passing by Åre is always welcome in to the Åre Avalanche Center at Stjärnbacken. I might even tell you where to find the best snow!

GORE-TEX® ACTIVE SHELL

CONSTRUCTION

TIERRA AND DOWNDown is a natural product and offers the best insulation on the market. Down has a higher warmth-to-weight ratio than synthetic insulation and it is also more compressible. High grades of down offer the most substantial benefits, and are the superior option for high-performance activities. For Fall Winter 2012 Tierra offers two new Down Jackets, Roc Blanc down jacket and Roc Noir down sweater, both in a male and female style.

Tierra work exclusively with one down supplier, who in turn works with contracted slaughter houses. Everyone involved has signed our Code of Conduct. During the entire process, down for Tierra products is transported in closed sacks to avoid being mixed with other down. At the factories, only the down in these sacks is used as padding in Tierra jackets. Our quality control team monitors the process by making announced and unannounced audits.

After many years of working with down, we have created extremely strict inspection processes for our down. The process is described below.

FARMS Tierra works with one down supplier, that currently has agreements with farms in the Yangzhou Hanjiang Goose Association in China. These farms follow the animal welfare regulations stated by the association regarding the animal handling. The work of the farmers is regularly reviewed by Fjällräven’s quality inspectors.

PROCESS Tierra’s down supplier works with two contracted slaughter houses.

Both slaughterhouses have signed Tierra’s and Fjällrävens Code of Conduct. Personnel from our down supplier are present during the slaughter to ensure that the down that will later be used in Tierra products only comes from birds from Tierra’s nominated farms. The meat is used as food and the down is gathered up in sacks that are marked with Tierra. The closed sacks are then transported to the location where the down will be dried. Tierra’s down is dried separately before it is again sealed and transported to our down supplier.

DOWN SUPPLIER At the down supplier, Tierra’s down is washed in an environmental shampoo from German Pulcra Chemicals. The water is cleaned and filtered before it is released, and the clean down is then dried in a dryer. In order to ensure that the down meets our strict requirements, it undergoes a filtering process during which lower quality down is sorted out and sold. IDFL (International Down and Feather Labora-tory) conducts tests to ensure that the down is of the best quality and corresponds to Tierra’s high standards. The high quality down is placed into new sacks, sealed and marked with the down quality, quantity and composition. It is then sent to our factories. Tierra’s quality inspectors approve the down sacks by signing them. The inspectors also save some of the down for later cross-testing.

GORE-TEX® PRODUCTSGarments engineered with GORE-TEX® product technology are durably water-proof and windproof combined with optimised breathability. Enduring products that maximise wearers´ protection and comfort.

GORE-TEX® PACLITEPaclite® product technology is the ideal solution for hiking, golf, Travel and other activities where space and weight are critical. A protective layer on the inside of the GORE-TEX® membrane makes a separate lining unnecessary. The result: minimum weight and pack volume.

PERTEX® QUANTUMPertex® Quantum is the lightest fabric from Pertex, it is true featherweight made from the finest yarn, about 30 g/m2. The tear strength is good for its weight. The fabric is soft as silk and has a small packing volume. PERTEX® MICROLIGHT Pertex® Microlight is made from tightly woven yarns. When used in down jackets the dense weave will prevent excessive heat loss through the fabric. Using 33 decitex/30 denier yarns, it is both downproof and windproof, water-repellent and durable.

PRIMALOFT®

The human body is around 37 degrees Celsius but often ends up in places that threaten to make it far colder than that! PrimaLoft® insulates your body to keep it comfortable and conserve energy even in extreme cold.

PRIMALOFT® ECOPrimaLoft® Eco blends 50% virgin fibres and 50% recycled fibres to create a high loft performance insulation. The recycled fibres are produced from post-consumer products products (plastic bottles) and post-industrial plastic waste. PrimaLoft® Eco is warm, lightweight and water resistant to keep you dry and comfortable.

PRIMALOFT® SYNERGY, is an advanced multi-denier continuous filament insulation engineered for superior warmth, softness and loft. PrimaLoft® SYNERGY is constructed of both fine and ultra fine denier continuous filament fibers. This fiber composition re-sults in an insulation that raises the performance bar of continuous filament insulations. PrimaLoft® SYNERGY is highly durable and compressible, designed to keep the user warm dry and comfortable.
