This Week's Torah Portion in a Nutshell: NitzavimDeuteronomy Triennial Reading: (1) 29:9-11 pg. 1165(2) 29:12-14 pg. 1165-1166(3) 29:15-28 pg. 1166-1168(4) 30:1-6 pg. 1169-1170(5) 30:7-10 pg. 1170(6) 30:11-14 pg. 1170-1171(7) 30:15-20 pg. 1171-1172Maftir: 30:15-20 pg. 1171-1172

Every Israelite gathers to hear Moses’s closing words. They are told that they have an equal share in God’s covenant with their ancestors before them. They also are warned once again about the punishments they will endure if they worship idols. Still, God will reward those who repent. God reminds the Israelites that the laws are not remote, theoretical concepts, but ideas that are attainable for all.

Spotlight Series to Salute Joan Wallick - October 30 - 7:00 pmDon't miss this singularly sensational evening of live performance, classic film footage, and backstage stories of the great American musical composers - from Gershwin to Sondheim and beyond. The show will be followed by a beautiful dessert reception with our guest artist Richard Glazier, and a salute to Joan Wallick, long-time congregant and synagogue supporter. For full details, go to tinyurl.com/btoh2016. or contact [email protected].

Rabbi vs. Rabbi - Beginning October 22Two Rabbis, three (or more) opinions! In lieu of a sermon during services, after Kiddush, Rabbis Ungar and Braver will each teach a separate Jewish source related to the weekly Torah portion, which sheds light on an issue facing the Jewish community or the broader world. Then, in the tradition of paired chevruta study, the Rabbis will dive into a (friendly) debate and conversation with each other - and the congregation - about what these texts actually mean. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

Shabbat Warmup - Beginning on October 29Beginning Shabbat B'reishit, Shabbat morning services will begin at 9:30 am! The clergy have some exciting changes in store for the service that will still maintain the familiarity of what our "regulars" recognize but focus on creating a more participatory and meaningful worship experience. Though we will be starting later, our plan is to still finish by noon (perhaps a little later if there is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah). Come check out the changes and let us know what you think! Your feedback will help us as we uncover what our worship will look like in the years to come. Since we're starting later, join us earlier!
