The Northwestern Lehigh School District continues our strong tradition of keeping

the community informed regarding district issues and our achievements. In this year’s edition of “Spotlight on Achievement,” you will find a summary of many of the outstanding accomplishments of our students and our dedicated staff. As in the past, the students at Northwestern Lehigh continue to demonstrate their desire to perform at their highest level of ability. These outstanding achievements reflect the support of parents and the community. As you read stories about our students’ performances and accomplishments, we hope you will share our pride and commitment to the Northwestern Lehigh School District.

Through the Strategic Planning process we are currently updating the mission statement and developing new goals for the School District. When completed, the mission statement and goals will be approved by the school board and published in an upcoming issue of Tiger Pride. As we proceed through the elementary building and renovation project, updates will also be included in Tiger Pride as well as on the district Web site. I hope you and your family are enjoying the summer months. The administration and staff are busy preparing for the August 28th start of school and we look forward to another exciting, challenging year.

“On behalf of the school board and the entire Northwestern Lehigh staff, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the outstanding performance of the students and staff highlighted in this edition of “Spotlight.”

The High School Key Club organizes two blood drives each year in conjunction with Miller Keystone Blood Center. This year’s drives were quite successful! We had 32 donors at the November blood drive, and 60 at the March blood drive. In addition, faculty, students, Key Club members and local businesses do-nated food for the buffet table. Northwestern Lehigh Key Club knows how to “Give Blood, Save a Life!” Key Club also raised $550.00 for hurricane Katrina relief, $150.00 for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and $450.00 for “the Great American Bake Sale” to com-bat hunger in our community. Key Club members de-

livered meals to shut-ins on two occasions for Lehigh Valley Meals on Wheels. Over $1000.00 worth of flowers were sold by Key Club members for the Allentown Boys and Girls Club. Walk-a-thons for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in October, and the March of Dimes in April, were fun ways for Key Club members to raise money and also have some fun. Key Club takes special delight in treating our teachers to breakfast twice each year on the morning after parent teacher conferences. Each teacher and staff member was presented with a holiday gift of a poinsettia in December.

Science Club Team Members Laura Dietrich, Liz Vaughn, Adam Hardy, Andy Zoghby and Greg Bringhurst placed 1st in the 48 Hour Chal-lenge. Each student will receive a $500 award. The school will receive $2500. Dave Moyer is the Science Club advisor.

Artist for Cultural Diversity Week 006Sarah Ayers, who was voted the best female vocalist in the Valley for 2003, 2004 and 2005, was kind enough, along with her band, to come to NWLHS to motivate, encourage, support, guide and inspire our “budding” singers, song writers, musicians and visual artists to take a giant step out of their comfort zones to stretch and grow toward professional status as was demonstrated in two assembly presentations on April 11, 2006 at the HS. Ms. Ayers is a mother of two, owns her own home and supports it all with her music career. She models that it can be done. Her message to the students was “don’t let anyone tell you that it can’t be done. It is hard work but if it is what you want, you can do it. Do what you love but study Business so you can figure out how to make it all happen.” Sarah Ayers and the Sarah Ayers Band (Dave, Jim and Suavek) earned the respect and admira-tion of all at Northwestern Lehigh High School.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Students from Northwestern and Weisenberg Elementary schools participated in a regional Alex’s Lemonade Stand in recognition of Global Youth Services Day. The students in Wendy White’s classes participated in various ways. These included being part of two videoconferences with the other participating schools, organizing school-wide poetry contests, helping to organize a “Cards for Kids” campaign, and of course, hosting their own lemonade stands!

The week-long event was coordinated by the University of Pennsylvania’s MAGPI group. During the videoconferences, the students not only learned about the other schools’ efforts, they also had the opportunity to hear from Alex’s parents and to learn about Alex, her struggle with cancer and her

vision to help with an idea as simple as setting up a lemonade stand in her own front yard. The “Thinking of You” cards were created in art class by most elementary students and were sent to patients in Palmerton Hospital and Hershey Medical Center. The poetry contest was open to all elementary students. Mrs. White’s students acted as the judges and selected winners from each grade level. These were then forwarded to the MAGPI group, which posted them on a website for the official voting to take place. Paige McLaughlin (4th gr., Weisenberg) took first place, while the writing team of Sierra VanHook and Mariana Valencia (4th gr., NWE) took third and Colleen Morrison (3rd gr., NWE) took fourth! The culminating events, hosting their own lemonade stands, took place in May during Literary Arts Night at NWE and The Art Expo at Weisenberg Elementary. Together, the children raised just over $1,000 to be donated to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. Thanks to Bloses’s Market for helping to sponsor the lemonade stands and to all who made contributions. We helped to fight cancer… “one cup at a time.”
