  • Sectra Communications ensuring security with flexibility

Sectra has more than 30 years of experience in developing secure communications. We know what is required to meet the toughest demands. Sectras effective solutions ensure secure communications, also when operations require maximum flexibility and mobility.

Our customers include European defense ministries, government authorities, and other critical functions of society. Safeguarding sensitive information requires trust and expertise.

Our close cooperation with leading European security agencies is clear evidence that Sectras solutions are considered the most secure on the market. Our expertise in encryption technology is well known and Sectra

is one of the worlds foremost special-ists in the design and development of secure communication systems.

We offer solutions approved at national levels and within the EU and NATO. Four security levels Top Secret, Secret, Confidential and Restricted define the handling of sensitive information and any potential damage that might occur should an unauthorized party gain access.

Sectra Communications currently employs nearly 60 professional specialists in Sweden and in the Netherlands. The companys head office is located in Linkping, Sweden and the technology has sprung from leading researchers at Linkping University.

  • Challenging security threats

Working with highly sensitive information, decision-makers, and government and defense authority officials must adhere to strict pro-cedures to safeguard confidentiality. If a countrys most closely guarded information ends up in the wrong hands, national security could be compromised. Therefore safeguards must be in place to prevent inter-ception of calls or theft of data and contact information.

Without encryption, communica-tions may be subject to an array of attacks. The most common threat to a voice call is network eavesdropping techniques. The encryption used by

operators is in many cases outdated or not even enabled, and the Internet provides ample information on how to crack standard algorithms.

Since mobile phones connect to the local base station with the best signal strength, a transmission can be directed to fraudulent base stations. Easily accessible and inexpensive equipment and free software allow hackers to set up these false base stations. Through similar decep-tion, phone calls can be intercepted and recorded, and text messages read and even manipulated. Spoofing, whereby hackers forge identities from phonebooks is yet another risk.

Infringements are virtually undetect-able and the victim is usually un-aware of the attack until the damage is done.

Being aware of the risks associated with unencrypted communication is a first step. To install appropriate security solutions for the handling of sensitive or classified information is the next. With a security solution from Sectra, users can feel safe know-ing that they only reach those with whom they intend to communicate.

  • Sectras Tiger XS is in use in more than half of the EU member states and is the de facto standard for secure mobile communications within the EU. It has several national approvals and is approved by the EU and NATO at the SECRET security level. It is the only crypto phone with NATO and EU approv-als for both mobile and fixed line communications.

Achieving the SECRET security level is significantly more complex and demanding than one might real-ize. By using an appropriate access point, Tiger XS enables secure com-munication both on digital networks such as 2G (GSM), 3G (UMTS),

ISDN and satellite networks. Con-necting Tiger XS to Tiger XS Office, it can operate on standard telephone lines (PSTN).

To receive encrypted faxes, it must also be connected to the Tiger XS Office. While connected to a PC, the Tiger XS can be used to send encrypted data. It can also be used with a conference phone at a prote-cted location for meetings involving classified information.

The encryption systems in Tiger XS and Tiger 7401 are compatible. This enables organizations to deploy both solutions based on the needs of the individual user.

Sectras Tiger system has been in widespread international use since the 1990s. Sectra was the first to launch a secure mobile phone approved at the security level Secret. In close collaboration with customers and security authorities Tiger XS and a number of additional products for secure communication has evolved since then, through continuous product development.

  • System overview

The Security Management Center (SMC) and the Key Generation Center (KGC) are system compo-nents that provide necessary encryption keys to the Tiger network.

The SMC also provides online calling policies and remote management of units, such as supplying an up-to-date phonebook over-the-air for the Tiger user.

The Crypto Custodian and the Security Management Center opera-tor administer the system.
