Tighes Hill Public School Newsletter No. 6
Principal’s Report
Congratulations to the 22 students who represented Tighes Hill
Public School last Friday at the Zone Cross Country carnival. As
usual, all THPS students participated with great skill and
enthusiasm, displaying fantastic sportsmanship and support for
each other. Kalan, Amie and Alexis performed extremely well
and qualified for the Hunter Region carnival with Memphis and
Seb also being placed on the reserve list. Well done to the entire
team!
I would like to thank all our parents and carers for giving their
children such a wonderful holiday break. The children have re-
turned to school after a very short first week ready for hard work,
full of enthusiasm and very settled. School uniforms look great
as well. Thank you everyone.

that you read our newsletters each fortnight to keep up to date.
A Term 2 calendar has been included with this week’s newsletter
and is posted on our website.
ANZAC Day Assembly
Our special assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day was held
Friday at the end of Term 1. Thank you to Ms Armstrong and our
school captains for organising such a special assembly. Thank
you also to all the children whose behaviour and participation
was exceptional.
Kindy Club
Kindy club is back up and running this year with two sessions
being delivered each Tuesday. Mrs Ireland and Mrs Crump have
alerted me to the fact that we have a few spaces left so if your
child starts school next year (2019) and you are local to us, why
not visit the school and let them take part in our extended orien-
tation program. Please contact the office for more information as
required.

2019 OC Test Applications for Year 4 students
Parents wishing to apply for Year 5 Opportunity Class (OC)
placement in 2019 on behalf of their children need to complete
the online application before Friday 18th May. Students in Year 4
were given the application information at the end of last term to
direct parents to the location of the online applications. Any
issues with this process please see the classroom teacher or
contact the office. Applications will close on Friday 18th May.

Entertainment Books
The school is now selling the latest 2018-2019 Entertainment
Book as a fundraiser and receives $12 from every book sold – so
drop into the office and grab one before they sell out.
Office Times
The school office opens at 8.30am each morning and closes at
3.30pm. Outside of these operating hours the office cannot
process financial activities or administer first aid treatment in the
sick bay. Those families staying onsite after the school day has
finished, take full responsibility for their children’s wellbeing and
safety. Access to the sick bay outside of the office operating
hours is not permitted. Thank you for supporting the school with
this endeavor.
NAPLAN
Year 3 and 5 children will sit for the national assessment tests on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (15th, 16th &17th of May).
As the name implies the NAPLAN tests will be administered
Australia wide in all educational settings. Please make sure that
you child is at school all of week 3 so that they can participate in
this test plan. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require
further information.
Dogs in School
Just a reminder that we don’t have or bring dogs into the school
grounds at any time as was agreed through the P&C and is
department policy. This is regardless of the size or breed. I would
also encourage you not to tie your dogs up at the entry points to
our school as students exiting or entering the school have to
pass close by to them and this is a real issue for those students
with a phobia or fear of dogs. Many thanks for supporting the
school with this issue.
Chess Coaching Y3-6
Mondays 1.15pm - 1.55pm
provided by the Sydney
Academy of Chess. Cost - $68
per term. Please see Ms
Armstrong for more details.

continue to support children and families affected by cancer. Thank you students.
Sport Y3-6
This term students in Years 3-6 have some exciting sporting opportunities to be a part of. A Stage 2 and
3 team for weekly PSSA soccer and netball will represent our school each Friday afternoon in this com-
petition. We are also fortunate to have 2 basketball coaches from ‘Aussie Hoops’ joining us each Friday
supplemented by the Sporting Schools grant to conduct coaching clinics with students to develop a
range of ball skills and techniques.

Stewart House Donation Drive 2018
During Term 2 2018, information will be sent into all NSW Department of Education schools
promoting Stewart House Day.
We ask all schools, large and small, primary, secondary and special, and their communi-
ties to organise special fundraising activities for Stewart House during this time.
Please note that this does not preclude schools from undertaking Stewart House fundrais-
ing at other times during the school year. Instead, we wish to provide a focal point for all
schools to acknowledge the continuing work of Stewart House.
Envelopes were sent home yesterday for Stewart House.
Enclose a $2 coin and complete details and return the envelope to the office. Entries
need to be at the school office by May 19th to be sent away in time for the draw. You
could win a $4,000 Holiday to a destination of your choice.
Stewart House and The Smith Family have been building sustainable initiatives that benefit
children and families in disadvantaged communities.
