About the Trip
Chaperones
❏Ms. Beth Matus, Ms. Joanna Thurmann and
Mr. Dave Lipscomb are your chaperones
❏Our primary job is to keep you safe
❏ In order to keep you safe, we must all follow
rules
Key Points
❏Not a vacation. We are doing God’s work.
❏Remain aware. Everyone’s safety depends
upon everyone else.
❏ The days are long. There is time to relax, but
there is more work than not.
Health Safety
❏ Drink fluids constantly (esp. at job site)
❏ Don’t drink tap water or use for toothbrushing (drink
bottled or from drink coolers at job sites)
❏ Wear sunscreen, hats, protective gear
❏ Beware of lice (girls - tie up your long hair during
the kids/teen programs)
Expectations / Requirements
Shield the Vulnerable
❏ STV (Shield The Vulnerable) Live/In-Person Training
❏ Required for all youth under 18 (no exceptions)
❏ Required unless you took class in last 3 years @ Catholic
school (except Presentation), in which case YOU MUST
provide the certificate (Teen Leadership, STV, VIRTUS)
❏ If you need to take the course, check the APPLY page for
link to website with dates/times/locations
Behavior
❏ Christ-like behavior and language❏ Cooperate with all peers and adults❏ Communicate appropriately❏ Respect the boundaries and property of others❏ Promote safe, fun, healthy environment❏ Be inclusive❏ No abuse, fighting, misconduct, harassment,
inappropriate touch of any kind

❏ You are representing the Tijuana ministry. We take
that job very seriously and ask you to do so as well.
❏ It is your job to know the policies and you are
accountable to those policies.
❏ Infractions will result in disciplinary action.
Consequences
❏ Escalation❏ Verbal warnings❏ Communication with parents/Guardian❏ Removal from trip
❏ Your parents are responsible (financially) for damage you cause and/or return trip home
Contraband
❏ Weapons❏ Cigarettes/tobacco❏ Drugs❏ Alcohol❏ Valuable Electronics❏ Valuable Jewelry❏ Condoms
Clothing
❏ You must wear shirt/shoes at all times
❏ Closed-toed work shoes at job sites
❏ No tank tops, baggy pants, visible underwear
❏ No inappropriate slogans or pictures
❏ You may wear shorts and dresses, but length must
be appropriate and modest. No track shorts.
Other
❏ You may not wander (anywhere, anytime)❏ At compound; no roof climbing, no hiding behind
buildings or closed classrooms❏ Must remain at worksite, program site or compound❏ Keep noise levels at a minimum❏ Deposit trash in receptacles (clean up after meals) ❏ Keep your sleeping area clean❏ Clean up floor after shower

❏ Boys are not allowed in girls sleeping quarters and
girls are not allowed in boys area
❏ Respect right to privacy, right to peace and quiet
❏ No physical or emotional abuse will be tolerated
❏ No foul, derogatory, disrespectful, hostile language
Worksite
❏ Report to, respect and listen to the job site leaders. Youth
Chaperones may not be at your worksites
❏ Keep busy but be patient; there’s always work to be done
❏ Jump in if you see things need to be carried, cleaned,
picked-up, etc. Be proactive!
❏ Do not just “hang out”
Worksite Safety
❏ Listen to all directions. Stay aware of surroundings
❏ Wear appropriate clothing for worksite: long pants, sturdy
shoes, work gloves, hard hat, long-sleeve
❏ Ask questions when unsure of instructions
❏ Power tools may only be used when permitted and
supervised by authorized adults

warnings and escalation to parent/guardian
