timber creek elementary march 2014 tiger tails
TRANSCRIPT
Timber Creek Families Spring has sprung and hopefully we have seen the last of those cold winter mornings. Thank You for helping Timber Creek in February. We are thankful for those volunteers at Tiger Shop and the Book Fair, for those who brought in wonderful treats for Teacher Treat Day and for those who enjoyed a delicious meal at Pazzo’s during out spirit day. Our Spring Fiesta Book Fair was a blast! Thank you for coming out and supporting Timber Creek Elemen-tary. We were able once again to purchase some great books for the library which your child will be able to check out and borrow soon. March begins with the wrapping up of the coupon book fundraiser. We have heard so many great com-ments about the coupons in the book. Please remember to return all unsold books and/or money for orders by Wednesday March 5th. Have you been sending in those Box Tops, Coke Rewards and Labels for Education? These fund many great programs at Timber Creek including BOOKFLIX. Did you know that your PTA is committed to parent education, family engagement and advocacy? We are committed to your kids. At the end of March we will be sending home packets for the 2014-2015 school year. These packets will include the 2014-2015 PTA Membership form, Pre-Sale T-shirt orders to save you money and school supply kit orders. Don’t forget to return these to save money and mark one thing off the to-do list for the next school year. Interested in a position on the PTA board or working on a committee for the 2014-2015 school year? Elections for board positions will be held in April and some committees will be starting to meet before the end of this school year. If you are interested in learning more about any of these roles, please do not hesitate to contact me for more information. Wishing you all a wonderful and safe spring break Michelle Hernandez PTA President [email protected]

It seems the worst of the cold winter weather may be behind us and warmer weather is here! The nov-elty of icy sidewalks, freezing temperatures, and inside recess wore off fast as the days continued. What a wonderful sight when the sun came out, the Morning Mile runners were back on the field, and recess was outside once again.
Something else that is back again is the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or the STAAR test. This test will be administered to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in April. The test is lengthy, has time limits, and has strict rules for the teachers and students to follow, so it is very differ-ent from a normal school day. For these reasons, we recently administered a practice test. Being famil-iar with the expectations should provide each student additional confidence and skills so they have the optimal testing environment on STAAR testing days. If you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade child, please be looking for the results of the practice exam to be shared with you soon.
If you have a child in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, please be aware that during STAAR testing our campus will experience a slightly different schedule. Our lunch times, PE, Art, and Music rotations may be switched to accommodate the students testing. Please watch for information as the dates near. We appreciate your support and flexibility during these special testing days.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sharon Heier
Proud Principal of Timber Creek Elementary

Our final Texas Lifetime Member award for this year is
being awarded to a member who been involved in PTA for
over 7 years, 6 of them as a Board Member.
She was a military brat, living in Greece and Germany,
where she graduated high school. She attended Texas
A&M and graduated with a Biomedical Engineering
Degree. After marrying her husband, Chris, they moved to
Reno where their daughter, Katie, was born. The pull of
Texas was too great so they relocated back and settled in
Flower Mound. Joshua was born in ’09.
Her dedication to school and the PTA makes this an honor
to bestow. She is currently serving on the Lamar MS board
as the treasurer and is serving on the Timber Creek Board
as the book fair chair. Her dedication to the Timber Creek
Elementary family amplified by the fact that she doesn’t
even have a child that attends here currently!
She is dedicated, hardworking and has a kind and giving
heart. It is because of these qualities that we are proud to
present Angela Holcomb with the TX Lifetime Member
ANGELA HOLCOMB
Our first Texas Lifetime Member award for this year is
being awarded to a member who been involved in PTA for
a really long time. While teaching our children during the
day, she has always found time to volunteer at Fall Festival
and contribute to the bake off amongst other PTA
adventures.
She graduated from the University of North Texas, has her
Master’s Degree and has taught education for 42 years. Of
which the last 23 have been here at Timber Creek.
During her 23 years at Timber Creek she taught 2nd Grade,
3rd Grade and the last 10 years as part of our wonderful
special education department. She has dedicated herself
to help the children of Timber Creek reach their potential
in the classroom, even the stubborn ones.
She is dedicated, hardworking, highly efficient and
organized. It is because of these qualities that we are
proud to present Linda Mace with the TX Lifetime Member

Timber Creek’s Morning Mile Club
Beginning on Monday, January 6, Timber Creek students will have the opportunity to participate in our Morning Mile Club. This is
open to all students in Kindergarten – 5th grade. Research shows that students are better prepared to learn when their day begins
with exercise. Runners/walkers will start their day at 7:15, out by Tiger Field. They will walk or jog laps, while socializing with friends,
each morning they choose to participate. The gym and cafeteria will still be open for all students who choose not to attend. Miles will
be tracked, and students will be rewarded with a necklace and running charms for the completion of each 10 miles.
There are many benefits to this program:
Exercise helps to prevent childhood obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other health concerns
Students expend youthful energy and go to class ready to learn
Students gain self confidence while getting more fit
Students will develop a dedication to a healthy lifestyle.
The morning mile will take place daily, Monday – Friday, weather permitting. The Morning Mile Facebook page web address is
https://www.facebook.com/TCEmorningmile . You can also sign up for Remind101 by texting (310) 776-6515 and typing @tcemm for
the message. This will alert you, by text, of cancellations due to the weather. We will be running as long as the temperature/wind
chill is above 34˚ and it is not raining. PLEASE SIGN UP FOR BOTH OF THESE!!!
If you are interested in helping with the morning mile, please contact Mrs. Dutt @ [email protected]. You will need to have a completed
LISD background check to help.
We look forward to healthy start to 2014!

Shoe Collection
I am currently collecting gently used athletic shoes that the kids can wear, to
PE, when they forget theirs, don’t have any, or can’t find them. Students are
missing out on fun and exercise when they do not have on proper footwear.
Please send gently used shoes that your kids have outgrown to the gym. If we
receive an overabundance of shoes, some will be donated to our Timber Creek
shoe collection box.
Thank you
Mrs. Dutt
