INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

Black screen with alarm ringing. With a thud the alarmsound stops and we are shown Katherine smacking her phonein an attempt to make the alarm stop.

KATHERINE(groans)

Cmon Katherine, you can do it.You can get out of bed.

Katherine rolls over and pulls back a black band coveringher wrist to show an electronic countdown.

KATHERINE(reads aloud)

64 years, 12 days, 2 hours and 4minutes. In that case, think I

can afford to spend another tenminutes in bed.

Katherine rolls back over and just after a split secondher phone rings. Caller ID shows Ches.

KATHERINE(Cranky)

Oh for gods-

Katherine stops and quickly changes the tone of her voiceas she answers the phone to Chester. Camera cuts betweenthe two. Chester is at the park with an old book.

KATHERINE(Cheery)

Hi Ches, whats up?

CHESTERIve told you, dont call meChes. Its Chester. Youre stillin bed arent you?

KATHERINE(Hesitates)

No

CHESTERYes you are. Youre meant to meetme here in ten minutes so youwanna hurry up... thats ifyoure still interested.

KATHERINEOf course I am; dont be stupid.Ill be there soon.

Chester gently pushes her shoulder and laughs.

CHESTERThanks a lot, Katherine. You dorealize that this book was in thelibrary? You could have found ityourself.

Chester smiles at her and lightens his tone. He takes thebook and opens it up somewhere in the middle.

CHESTERAnd you call yourself ajournalist.

KATHERINEHey, Im still working on thattitle, Im allowed to makemistakes. Once I break this story

though, everybody will know myname.

CHESTER"I break this story"?

KATHERINEYeah, yeah. When we break thestory. You can have a tiny littlename credit under my name. Why doyou care anyway? You have nointerest in local stories and

myths.

CHESTERI have an interest in people thatdo, though.

They both look up and smile at each other.

CHESTERAnyway, I found this. It sayshere that the guy youre lookingfor is known as Amos. It doesntsay much else other than in the

early 1900s his friends rippedhis band off as a joke and therewasnt a countdown there.

As Chester says this he holds on to his band and covers itwith his hand.

CHESTERHe was then on accused ofpracticing witchcraft and he wentinto hiding. Some people think hewas just faulty, others are

believers and truly think he wasimmortal.

KATHERINEAnd what do you believe?

CHESTERYou think Id go through all thiseffort to find this for you if I

wasnt a believer? Im just ascurious as you.

Katherine nods gratefully and goes to take the book butChester pulls it back.

KATHERINEOh, sorry. I just assumed I couldborrow this.

Chester takes a moment to think before handing Katherinethe book.

CHESTERSure you can. Its just somethingclose to my heart so I get a bitwary when lending it out.

KATHERINEIm only going to use it so I canquote it when Im writing aboutit. Besides, I thought it was alibrary book. You got attached toa library book?

CHESTERYeah, whatever. Just be careful,okay? See if you can findanything else and then give me acall.

Katherine nods, gets up to walk away and holds the bookclose to her chest.

KATHERINEIll see you later, Chester.Thank you.

EXT. ALLEY WAY - LATE MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON

Katherine is walking home with the book when she gets herphone out and makes a call. It rings three times before amale voice answers.

PETERHey Katherine, everything ok?

KATHERINEPeter, hi. I just met up withChester and he-

Katherine is cut off as Peter interjects.

PETERChester? Crazy Chester? Howstupid are you? The boy isinsane.

KATHERINEHe seemed alright to me. Hesonly helping me with this reportIm doing. Thats why Imcalling.

PETERThe one about the no countdownimmortal guy thing?

KATHERINE

(laughs)Youre so attentive. But yeah,that one. Chester said his nameis Amos and it happened in theearly 1800s. Apparently the guydidnt have a death countdown atall.

PETER(laughs)

Death countdown? So cheerful.

KATHERINE

Well its something that countsdown to the exact moment we die,so it only makes sense to call itthat.

PETERWhatever. How did it come aroundthat, Amos, was it?

KATHERINEYeah, Amos.

PETERWell how did it become publicthat Amos didnt have acountdown? Its the law that wehave to have it covered whenwere around others.

KATHERINEApparently his friends ripped itoff or something. Im gonna gethome and read this book Chestergave me and Ill call you later,okay?

PETERYeah sure.

INT. FRONT OF HOUSE - DAY

Katherine opens the door with the book still clutchedclose to her chest. She walks into the house, puts thebook on the side and makes herself a cup of tea.

She sits down on the sofa with the book and her tea andopens to the first page.

There is a time lapse of her reading the book. The mugs oftea gradually get bigger and she gets further and furtherinto the book. She starts sitting up straight and by theend of it is practically laying down. The camera stays inthe same shot for the entire thing.

Her head falls down as she dozes off and then her phonerings. The caller ID shows Chester. She looks aroundstartled before diverting her attention to the phone,rubbing her eyes, setting the book on the side andanswering the phone.

The camera cuts between the two. Chester is in a dark roomand his face is dimly lit.

KATHERINEThats the second time today thatyouve woken me up with your

phone calls. What do you want?

CHESTERAlright, misses grumpy. I justwondered how you were getting onwith the book. Anythinginteresting?

KATHERINEYes actually, I found out a lot.According to this book he stilllives in the area. I know it wasa local legend but I just assumed

he would have moved away.

CHESTERNo, just because he went intohiding it didnt mean he wantedto leave his home.

KATHERINEI think Im going to try andtrack him down. Talk to him, findout everything. Itd be great formy story! I spoke to Peter, you

know Peter? Peter Pearson?

CHESTER(slightly annoyed)

Yeah, Im familiar.

KATHERINEWell I told him and he thinks

were both crazy.

CHESTERI know I didnt specifically askyou not to tell anyone but I kindof hoped youd keep it quiet.Look, just go to bed and Illtalk to you in the morning.

Chester hangs up. Katherine looks over and the tea andsighs. She grabs the book and heads toward the stairs.

INT. BEDROOM - MORNING

The screen is black and the only sound is the phoneringing. We hear a groan before the camera shows Katherinein bed and reaching for the phone.

Camera cuts between the two. Chester is in a plain, welllit room.

KATHERINE(Sleepily)

Third time. This is the third

time youve woken me up with yourgod damn phone calls.

CHESTERSorry. I did tell you that Idcall in the morning.

KATHERINEWell its definitely the morning.Whats up?

CHESTER

I just wondered if I could cometo yours in an hour or two? Iwanted to talk to you about Amos.

KATHERINEYeah sure, whatever. Ill textyou my address.

Katherine hangs up, sends the text and gets out of bed.

INT. BATHROOM - MORNING

Katherine rolls her sleeves up and looks at her black bandthat covers her countdown. She turns the tap on and bringsthe soap forward. She pulls at the band and it comes off.

Her countdown shows 30 minutes.

She begins to wash her hands, oblivious to what haschanged. As she turns her hands over to wash the otherside she notices the countdown.

She pauses.

KATHERINE(Whispers)

Oh my god.

She quickly washes the soap off her hands, dries them,

puts her band back on and runs back into her room andpicks up her phone.

KATHERINE(Overwhelmed and emotional)

Peter? Peter, oh my god, its me.Its my countdown, it changed. Idont know when. Ive got 30minutes. Get here quickly.

INT. FRONT ROOM - LATE MORNING.

She hangs up and throws the phone on the bed. The doorbellrings. Katherine runs down the stairs quickly. Shesbreathing heavily and she looks panicked.

KATHERINEPeter? Is that you? Peter!

She opens the door to see Chester standing there.

CHESTERHey. So, lets talk about Amos.

KATHERINENot now, Chester!

Katherine grabs him by the collar, pulls him into thehouse and leaves the door open. She starts walking intothe front room and sits down. Chester follows.

KATHERINE(Panicked)

I have 30 minutes. I dont knowwhat Ive done wrong or who Iveupset but Ive got 30 minutes to

live. Chester, what do I do?

CHESTERYeah, Katherine, calm down. Letstalk about Amos.

Katherine stands up.

KATHERINE(Slightly hysterical)

Are you not listening? Im goingto die in 30 minutes and you wantto talk about a god damn legend?

CHESTERPlease, Katherine. It willexplain all.

Chester picks up the book and places it on his lap.

KATHERINE

I cant believe y-

Katherine doesnt finish her sentence before Chester hasgrabbed the book and smacked her around the head with it.She falls unconscious onto the sofa. He puts the book downand pulls her so shes sitting up right.

He straightens his shirt and sits opposite her and waitsfor her to wake up.

Camera goes to her point of view. Camera is out of focusand wobbly. Gradually brings Chester into focus.

KATHERINEYou... you knocked me out? Thatcould have eaten into my time! Iprobably only have-

Katherine goes to pull back her band but Chesterinterrupts her.

CHESTERYou have 17 minutes left. Youwerent out for long. You knowyou cant take your band off. I

how-

KATHERINENo. No. You cant talk!

Katherine stands up.

KATHERINEIm about to die in 17 minutesand I have no idea how or why,for that matter, and you wannachat. Unbelievable. Peter said

you were a psycho.

CHESTERIm not a psycho. I just want toshow you something.

Chester also stands and goes to take of his band.

KATHERINEBrilliant. Im about to die andyoure going to brag that yourenot.

CHESTERKind of, yes. Although Amos isntaround anymore, if doesnt meanthat his grandson isnt.

Chester takes his band off and his wrist is blank. Heholds it out for Katherine to see.

CHESTERThats the thing about the Amosblood line, me and my brothers;technically we arent immortal.We have to kill. If we dontkill, we die. And those we kill-

KATHERINEYou get their remaining years.

CHESTERExactly. Thats why I chose you,

Katherine.

Chester steps forward and puts his hands either side ofKatherines face.

CHESTERYou seemed so interested in Amos,I thought I could tell you andyou would help me. Youd let melive a little longer.

KATHERINE

So I only have 15 minutes leftbecause youre going to kill me?

CHESTERYes, and youre going to let me.

Katherine sadly smiles and nods ever so slighly beforeheadbutting Chester and he falls to the floor.

KATHERINENo, I dont think I am.

She rubs her head slightly as she walks to the kitchen andgrabs some rope from the cupboard. She grabs the rope andties Chesters hands together.

She walks back out into the kitchen and gets a spraybottle filled with water and walks back in.

Katherine sits opposite Chester and sprays him a few timesbefore he wakes up.

CHESTERI cant believe you did that! Youlittle brat!

KATHERINEIm not being killed. Not today.Not now.

CHESTERSo youre gonna kill me? Do youknow who I am?

KATHERINEYes. Youre Chester. You tried tokill me and Im not okay withthat, funnily enough.

Chester snaps the rope behind him and gets up. Katherinealso gets up and backs away slightly.

CHESTERThats the thing about beingalive for so long, you tend toget quite strong. Did you reallythink youd be able to beat me?

Youre in your pyjamas for go-

Peter walks up behind Chester and stabs him in the back.He falls to the floor. Peter is stood there with a bloodyknife.

PETERUm, your front door was leftopen. And I happen to like thepyjamas.

EXT. PARK - AFTERNOON.

Peter and Katherine are standing looking at the floorwhere they have burried Chester. There is a piece ofplastic sticking out of the grass.

PETERWhy did you put a piece ofplastic there? Is that your wayof telling people Hey, look overhere! Someones burried here!

KATHERINEKeep your voice down! You justkilled someone, literally 20minutes ago. How are you so calm?

PETER(Joking)

Maybe Im a mass murder and youjust havent noticed.

Katherine hits Peter on the arm.

KATHERINESeriously, Peter. Nows not thetime for joking.

PETEROkay. Yeah, I know. Im sorry. Itwas either him or you dying so I

chose to save my best friend. Howdid that kill him anyway? Ithought he was immortal.

KATHERINEHe only lived as long as hekilled people. He basically tookwhatever life they had left. Iguess he was just as human as therest of us, you know, minus that.

PETERHow old was he?

KATHERINEI dont know. He said hisgrandfather was alive in theearly 1900s, so hes probablybeen around for 70 years.

PETERUh, Katherine. I know it may notbe the time but didnt your Daddie 20 odd years ago?

KATHERINEYeah. Why? Whats that got to dowith anything?

PETERIts just, he was murdered. Theynever did find the killer, didthey?

KATHERINENo, but whats that got-

It finally dawns on Katherine what Peter means.

Theres a chance. How do youfancy starting a new researchproject?

Katherine nods confidently.
