Mr Galliott jumped at the chance and enrolled

Changing careers is a huge decision – before you make the leap ask yourself these questions. What’s the plan?

A successful career change can take

months to work through. Having a

detailed strategy in relation to training,

research and fi nances is essential. Do

your research and gather plenty of

information.

Do you want a new career or a

new job?

Don’t make the mistake of confusing

hating your current job with hating your

current career. If you don’t like your

workplace it’s easier to move on than

retrain in a new industry.

Are your CV and job-search

skills up-to-date?

If it’s been a while between job interviews

take the time to network, work on your

interview skills and polish your CV or

resume.

Do you have the necessary

skills and experience?

Transferable skills are important but

make sure you bridge the gap between

your old and new careers through

education and training. Try some

volunteer or intern work before quitting.

Are you making the change for

yourself?

Don’t let your parents, partner or anyone

else sway your decision. You have to

work in your chosen career everyday so

choose one that you enjoy. If you change

careers and don’t like it, you’ll only end up

resenting the person who pressured you

into the decision.

WA facing nursing shortageWith unemployment on the rise in Australia,

it’s important for the next generation of the

workforce to look at occupations showing

projected shortfalls.

One such occupation is nursing and the Health Workforce Report 2025 predicts a defi cit of between 12,000 and 16,000 nurses in Western Australia by the year 2025.

“The university sector alone isn’t able to provide for all health care education needs across Western Australia,” Institute of Health and Nursing Australia (IHNA) General Manager Shane Wylie said.

“Smaller institutions such as TAFEs and private RTOs have to play a key role in combating this predicted shortfall.”

Having recognised the need for quality training in the nursing sector, the Federal and State governments are providing subsidies to eligible students to make training more affordable and allow TAFEs and private RTOs to devote many resources to ensuring quality training.

It is not uncommon for training delivery to blend classroom, online and practical learning, giving students variety as well as an opportunity to gain hands-on experience before entering the workforce.

The nursing industry is not often seen as very attractive, however it is a highly rewarding profession for those wanting to make a difference in others lives and for those wanting a secure profession in the long term.

Nurses are often on-hand to assist those who not only require physical assistance, but emotional support as well and they often serve as a conduit between patients, their families and other medical staff, making them an invaluable part of healing and communication processes.

The university

sector alone isn’t able

to provide for all health

care education needs

across Western

Australia.”

A great decisionExtra qualifi cations can take you a long way in a career, which is something Beata Brennan has realised.

Currently working as a Senior Manager at

St George in the Corporate and Business

Bank, Ms Brennan is also completing a

Master of Business Administration (MBA) at

Curtin Graduate Business School.

The highly-qualifi ed and experienced

student, who has an undergraduate degree

at the University of Toronto, Canada and

a postgraduate degree from Jagiellonian

University, Poland, said it took her some

time to decide to do further study.

“It took me about three years to make the

decision to undertake further study as I felt

that I was at the right point in terms of my

career as well as personal circumstances,”

Ms Brennan said. “However, once I made

the decision to study I feel it’s been the best

experience.” Ms Brennan said the course

also allowed her to promote her passion.

“My personal passion is women in

leadership and I feel that the MBA is one

way in which I can promote this cause,”

she said.

“It provides a generalist

overview of all aspects

relating to business, from

people to strategy to

fi nance and therefore is

invaluable.”

On top of the career

opportunities, the

fl exibility and location of the school suited

Ms Brennan’s lifestyle.

“If I know that I will need to travel at work

for a time period, then I will elect to study

online for a particular trimester and then

revert back to ‘in class’ when I know

I will be based in Perth,” she

said.

“I don’t know what the

future holds for me

however I think the

MBA makes me

more than ready

to achieve any

plans or ambitions

I have.”

Why do postgraduate study?A postgraduate degree can help

you move forward in your career.

Curtin University offers fl exible

postgraduate courses across

a range of disciplines – from

graduate certifi cate to PhD.

You can complete a postgraduate degree

either through coursework or research.

Both options offer further research

opportunities, additional training and skills,

professional development – providing a

Postgraduate students are recognised

for qualities such as professionalism,

resilience, resourcefulness, patience and

being results-focused self-starters – all

qualities valued by employers.

Obtaining a postgraduate qualifi cation
