New Vision for Peaceful Development

,QKLVVSHHFKDWWKH812IÀFHDW*HQHYDfour years ago, President Xi Jinping raised two critical questions: “What has happened to the world and how should we respond?”

To this day, these questions remain valid.

The world is undergoing a bevy of changes, many of them unseen in the past century. The novel coronavirus dis-ease is yet to be contained and humans are standing at a crossroads, faced with some tough choices. Cooperation or confrontation? Openness or isolation? 0XWXDOEHQHÀWRU]HURVXPJDPH"+RZto build the global community and what kind of community is to be built to begin ZLWK"7KHZRUOG·VSRSXODWLRQÀQGVLWVHOIWUHDGLQJDÀQHOLQH

Peace and development are the as-pirations held dear by all human beings. Even today, these goals are yet to be 100 percent met. Armed conflicts flare up from time to time. The Cold War mentality and power politics still exist. Nonconventional security threats, par-ticularly terrorism, refugee crises, major communicable diseases and climate change fallouts, are rife.

It is mandatory that all nations forge ahead together.

This provides the context for Xi’s proposal—a community with a shared future for humanity. In his speech on January 18, 2017, he elaborated on this notion by saying, “All countries are en-titled to shape the future of the world, making international rules, managing global affairs and sharing the fruits of development.”

Such a world should have lasting peace, common security for all and common prosperity. It should be open, inclusive, clean and beautiful.

Thus far, many people around the globe have embraced the concept, and they are taking tangible action. Nevertheless, this is not enough.

This great cause rests on the shoul-ders of humanity at large and thus demands the involvement of all. When it comes to the pursuit of common inter-ests for future global development, we should rid ourselves of all distractions and join hands to turn this planet into one big family, transforming aspirations for a better life into a worldwide reality. CAAS has made remarkable progress in staple crop breeding in recent years.

Achievements have been made in genome analysis, cloning of new genes and key breeding technologies for crops including wheat, rice, corn, soy-bean and coarse cereals, Wan Jianmin, Vice President of CAAS, said at a press conference.

The research results have been published in top

international journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Biotechnology and Nature Genetics, providing the theoreti-cal basis and technical support for genetic improvement and precise breeding, Wan said.

According to him, CAAS has made breakthroughs in breeding new varieties that are

New Holiday MeasureGuangming DailyJanuary 8The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, which will fall on February 12 this year, is the most important traditional holiday and time for family reunions.

But this year, the traveling and gath-ering will pose a great challenge for controlling the spread of COVID-19. With a number of cases reported already, people need to decide very carefully if they should travel or stay put where they are.

Several provinces and municipalities including Beijing, Shanghai and Hebei have urged their residents to stay where they are to reduce the possibility of infections. Some cities are also encouraging employees to continue working during the holiday and not travel to their hometowns, but to choose an-other time to go on holiday when there is no travel rush.

However, to ensure that people who stay in the cities where they work also have an enjoyable Spring Festival, the lo-cal authorities should ensure in advance that there is no dearth of supplies, and public transport is adequate.
