to 99.5 percent of RNA synthesis perunit time. The relation between diffei-ential nucleic acid metabolism in poly-tene chromosomes of Diptera, asshown by puffing, and patterns of dif-ferentiation was discussed in independ-ent papers by C. Pavan (Universitvof Sao Paulo) and U. Clever (PurdueUniversity). An enhanced synthesis ofRNA, resulting from greater gene ac-tivity, is associated with the puffedchromosomal region. Some of the mostconvincing evidence that puffing is rc-lated to developmental processes is af-forded by experiments with the hor-mone ecdysone which induces moltingand also causes puffing at specific loci. One session of the symposium was
devoted to discussions on the genenccontrol of differentiation in plant de-velopment. The present status of re-search on species of the genuLs Acetab-ularia was presented by G. Werz (MaxPlanek Institut fur Meeresbiologie, Wil-helmshaven). Morphogenesis in theseunicellular and uninucleate green algaeis governed by the activity of 'morpho-genetic substances," probably messen-ger RNA. Under the inflltence of "reg-ulators," located within the cytoplasri, the potentialities of the morphogeneticsubstances are realized, that is, ex-pressed in morphological development.Realization depends, therefore, not onlyon temporary activations of nucleargenes, but also on activations of cer-tain gene prodLtCts already transferredand stored in the cytoplasm.
B. McClintock (Carnegie Institutionof Washington) summarized evidencein maize for identifiable controllingelements that govern the action ofgenes during development. Three sys-tems were disCussed in some detail: theAc system, the Spiiz system, and theDt system. The elements of all threcsystems share many properties in com-mon, which suggests a basic relation-ship among them with regard to originand composition. Furthermore, ele-ments with the same properties arcpresent in some strains of maize de-rived from different geographic regions.so that there is little reason to douLbithat they are common componentsof the maize genome. A basic differ-ence between differentiation in plant!and animals is that meristems of plantsremain in an embryonic conditiorthroughout the life of the individualwhereas most animals have only on(early embryonic stage. G. L. Stebbinm(University of California) pointed outhat, as a consequence, the most ,ig.nificant genetic changes in the evolution of higher plants are those tha

affect the structure of, and cell be-havior in, the primary meristem fromwhich the various organs are differen-tiated. Shifts between a condition thatis basically determined by cellularelongation to one that is determinedmostly by mitotic divisions withoutcell enlargement can be demonstratedto be under gene control in barley.Furthermore, morphogenetic effects inmeristematic regions and where a sym-metrical mitoses occur are shown tobe related to changes in nucleic acidsynthesis and mitotic rhythm.
This symposium will be publishedin a volume entitled Genetic Control ofDifferentiation, which is expected to beavailable around the first of the yearfrom the Clearinghouse of Federal Sci-entific and Technical Information, Na-tional Bureau of Standards, Spring-field, Virginia. The volume represents, then, a judicious sampling of presentresearch activity on the genetic con-trol of differentiation where, at somefuture time, a new synthesis in biologymay emerge.

This unique new approach mayvery well become instrumental insolving some of your intricate mi-crobiological research problems. It can be accomplished with theingeniously designed Reichert"ZETOPAN" by simultaneous ap-plication of white light and ultra-violet illumination supplementedby a newly developed fluorescencecontrast condenser. The combined advantages ofPhase or Anoptral Contrast andthe fluorescent techniques nowappear simultaneously in the mi-croscopic image. Our constant, self-regulating Pow-er Supplies for operation of thefluorescent light source prolongthe lifetime of the Osram burnerand insure a steady arc and in-creased light. The "ZETOPAN" is a versatile in-strument for all microscopic in-vestigations of transmitted, re-flected, and mixed illumination. It is a truly universal researchmicroscope.

RECOVER COMPONENTSELECTROPHORETICALLY!
You can now recover as many as 30 undiluted frac-tions in one hour working time. Technique requires noorganic solvents, no extreme pH, no salt precipitation,no dialysis, and no reconcentration of protein.Discover the preparative electrophoresis system which is aseasy as these three steps:1. Pour single gel solution into EC 480 PREPARATIVE GELELECTROPHORESIS CELL, apply samples directly, run for onehour, and remove gel slab.2. Using the EC 479 ELECTROPHORETIC DESTAINER, stainand destain "guide strip" only.3. Place gel slab on its side in separating grid (shown below) ofEC 730 ELUTION CONVECTION CELL. Protein components arerecovered simultaneously by elution convection electrophoresisin original undiluted concentration.
Entire experiment requires less than two hours working time.Total elapsed time will vary between three and six hours.
