Life & Music of Rodgers & Hart Music 110 The Timeless Melodies Foundation for Education, Inc. has been created to develop, promote, and advance the study and understanding of the role played by American song in the cultural development of our society. Our presentations are designed to increase and enhance the awareness of the general public with regard to the rich, historical signifi- cance of our American musical tradition. As such -- via lecture, live music, and audio and video excerpts -- we recount the life stories and career highlights of those who composed the music, wrote the words, or performed the classic, popular melodies and lyrics. These are the men and women who have immeasurably informed our lives and world... and whose accomplishments remain the standard to which all others have aspired or been compared. Description: This is a survey course detailing the lives and musical partnership of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Our objectives: 1. To review and develop an appreciation for the prodigious output -- in quantity and quality -- effected by Rodgers & Hart for the Broadway stage and the early Hollywood film musicals; 2. To compare and contrast the different attitudes held by the two men with regard to both their professional careers and their personal lives; 3. To detail their ceaseless attempts to enhance, elevate, and expand the musical --and to appreciate the early evolution it enjoyed at their hands; 4. To remember and acknowledge the unique skill of Larry Hart as lyricist, versifier, rhyming technician, and pop music “poet.” Suggested Reading: Richard Rodgers, William G. Hyland, Yale University Presss, 1998. Thou Swell, Thou Witty, The Life and Lyrics of Lorenz Hart, Dorothy Hart, Harper & Row, 1976 Suggested Listening: Richard Rodgers: The Sweetest Sounds, An American Masters Production, DVD, 2001.
