Timeline Project —Evening dress evolution

spring semester

Timeline Project—1900’s

This is the period of the Gibson girl. They are using S shaped corset, soft silhouette and lightly draped fabric. The sleeves are fitted, and with fullness at the elbow. Wider neckline.and bodices are fitted or gathered in the front. Skirts a flared.

Timeline Project—1910’s

Skirts are fell straight and evaluate from lightly draped to fully draped and quite fanciful. In the middle of the decade, during 1915-16, the skirts developed an A line silhouette.

Timeline Project—1920’s

There are many names for 1920s evening dress. Party dresses, cocktail dresses, prom dresses, and evening dresses. Evening dresses were almost always sleeveless and daringly short. Necklines are a low square cut, scoop or V shape, and the back of the dress are the same as the front(neck line). Fabric was sometimes draped and gathered at the dropped waistline (waist around the mid hip or lower), which was also often decorated with a big sash and bow at the front or on the side.

Timeline Project—1930’s

1930s evening dresses were long, sleek and sexy. The bodice of the dress always pretty tied to give the women feminine silhouette so sometimes the bias cut were popular. Dresses were decorated with small groups of beaded flowers or rhinestones around the neckline. They used more silk or satin to create light flowing. Many 1930s evening  gowns were inspired by Grecian and Egyptian goddesses with extensive draping on a column silhouette.  Sleeveless and backless

Timeline Project—1940’s

At that time, Sequins and beads were were put on everything. Dresses and gowns were simple but shiny, and more on the casual side. 1940s formal dresses were usually made from rayon and fastened with metal zippers or small buttons in the back. Black was the most popular color, and pinks, reds and blues were often used as well.

Timeline Project—1950’s

In the '50s, full-skirted dresses were fashionable. These dresses were tea-length, hitting mid-calf, maybe longer. Ruffles were popular in some people. The bodice were princess cut bodice and strapless, halter neck, or mesh top short sleeves.

Timeline Project—1960’s

1960s evening dresses were classy and elegant. The short cocktail dress was preferred over longer ball gowns , and the sleeveless empire waist dress with long column skirt in a rich texture was were popular at that time. The one shoulder gown came back in fashion too but the knee length swing dress continued to be a fashion tradition. The velvet or brocade halter neck gown were wanted by many girls.

Timeline Project—1970’s

At that time, disco was popular, girls everywhere are wearing long floaty gowns made of synthetics to create a style "gently unflattering." This particular gown has sheer long sleeves, while other dresses had an off-the-shoulder bed skirt look.

Timeline Project—1980’s

In 1980s, everything went shiny and metallic, women at that time liked shinny things, whatever sequins and beads or that actual shiny fabric like velvet or something like metallic. The big shoulder pads was a signature too.

1990s evening dresses didn't change much, just tighter and sometimes lower the waist, people at that time still like velvet or flannel those shiny things.

Timeline Project—2000’sIn early 2000s, the Spaghetti Straps was popular, but when time went to late 2000s, there were several things happened, like corset style back, boning at princess seam, super shiny materials which kept from 80s and 90s, meringue skirt, matching shawl, faux flowers, crystals sewn on dresses and strapless gowns.
