Dear Parents, Staff and Children,
District Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to the many students who competed in the Twilight Swimming Sports
on Thursday 23rd February. Our kids performed extremely well and as always showed
great sportspersonship and a wonderful team spirit. With many spectators cheering on
our competitors, it was again symbolic of the great community that Sunbury West is.
Congratulations to all swimmers for their participation. Sunbury West finished second
in the small schools’ division. Congratulations to Dane Reeks and Ava Giddens who
were our only swimmers in the Divisional swimming today, they have both progressed
to the Regional Finals in their respective events, 11 Year Old Backstroke event and 50m
Breaststroke. Good Luck Dane & Ava!
School Council
As the number of nominations has not exceeded the number of places on School Coun-
cil, there is no need for a ballot. Congratulations and thankyou to the following parents
who are newly appointed to our Sunbury West School Council this year; Katie Nichols,
James King and Lance Robertson.
They will join existing parent Council reps, Melissa Jeal, Fabio and Bernadetta Zambetta
and Stevielee Boyce. Our department reps are Daniel Gregory, Melissa Baba, Pina
Readman, Elissa Campbell and myself.
Thankyou to our outgoing Councillors, Rae Marsh Delia, Mark Chatman, Abi Bradbury
and Ben Payton. Your contributions over a number of years in some cases, are greatly
appreciated and valued. We still have one parent rep place available, so it’s not too
late!!! Our first official meeting of the 2017 School Council is on Wednesday 22nd March
2017.
FOSW
We are looking forward to our Family Fun Night on Friday 17th March. This is always a

for prizes directly to the office.
Nominations for FOSW President and Secretary are now under way also. If you would
like to nominate someone, or yourself for these positions, please collect a form from
the office.

last week. Thank you to those families who have already logged in and had a look at the new portal. A remind-
er our newsletter will be available for viewing in your Compass Newsfeed each fortnight. Please contact the

Japanese Festivals: Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival or Girl’s Day)
Minnasan konnichi wa ( みんなさんこんにちは Hello everybody)
During our Japanese lessons we have been learning about Hina Matsuri. This festival is held on March 3 every year. It is a
time for families to wish good health and future happiness for girls. Each family sets up a display of hina dolls clothed in
colourful kimono. They offer rice crackers and other food to the dolls.
The dolls wear clothing of the imperial court during the Heian period (794 to 1192) and are placed on a tiered platform
covered in red material. The top tier is for the emperor and empress. A miniature gilded folded screen is placed behind
them, just like the real imperial throne of the ancient court. On the second level are three ladies-in-waiting. On the third
tier are five male court musicians. Ministers sit beside trays of food on the fourth step. The fifth step has guards. Can you
see an orange tree on the left and a cherry tree on the right?
