W hen shopping for life insurance, you’ll face several importantdecisions. One of the most

basic is whether you want term life or wholelife coverage. Understanding the benefitsand risks of each will help you choose thebest policy for your current and futurefinancial needs.

TERM LIFEWith term life, you pay premiums for a

certain period and in exchange, the insureragrees to pay your beneficiaries a stated ben-efit if you pass during that time.

Pros: You’ll receive great value. Terminsurance can be purchased in large amountsfor relatively small premiums.

You can match terms to needs. Mostpeople purchase term life to provide fortheir dependents. Once your kids are grown, your mortgage is paid off, and your retire-ment is nicely funded, you may have littleuse for a policy.

Cons: The policy is temporary. One ofthe key benefits of term life is also its biggestrisk. If your term expires and you still havelife insurance needs, you’ll re-enter the mar-ket as an older and potentially less-healthyconsumer. That means significantly higherpremiums, provided you’re coverable at all.

The benefit may not be paid. Some peo-ple chafe at the idea of paying for a benefittheir beneficiaries may never receive. If youstay current with your premiums and take

care of your health, you’ll receive no rewardfor outliving your policy.

WHOLE LIFEWhole life insurance provides a death

benefit throughout your life. It also includesa cash value component that accrues valueover time, allowing you to borrow or with-draw funds as needed.

Pros: Lifetime coverage. A whole lifepolicy covers the rest of your life, not just astated term. As long as your policy is inforce when you pass away, your beneficiarieswill receive a death benefit.

You’ll retain access to your money. The

premiums you pay for a whole life policybecome part of the policy’s cash value. Afteran introductory period, this cash valuebecomes available to you through loans1 oras a surrender value. You can even report thecash value as an asset when applying for aline of credit. Any way you choose to use it– if you choose to use it – the cash value ofa whole life policy provides another level offinancial security for your family.

You may receive dividends. Although

dividends are not guaranteed, the possibilityof earning extra income is an attractive fea-ture. Cons: Higher initial premiums. The firstyears are often higher, however, the lifetimelevels become more ffordable over time, while renewals can involve significanti-ncreases in premiums. Be sure to discussyour options with a qualified insurance rep-resentative or certified financial planner andconsult your tax and legal advisor regardingyour situation.

Once upon a time, libraries werepretty dull destinations for somepeople. If you weren’t a book-

worm (like me), you visited the library toget books for school assignments or forresearch on a topic of special interest.

My local library was housed inside theCity Hall of my town. When I steppedinside the building, the smell of the books

mingled with the odor of the freshly-mopped hallway floor leading there. I still remember my librarian, Mrs.McMullen. She was probably in her 40’s,but looked ancient to my 11-year-oldeyes. She wore glasses (of course) andmet me with a smile that both welcomedme and warned me to be quiet and to“respect the collection.”

The walls were bare, except for a fewwatercolor paintings from local artists. There was no sound unless Mrs.McMullen was stamping due dates insidebooks or someone was thumbing throughthe card catalog.

That was a long time ago. I haven’taged (!), but libraries have changed sodramatically in the last 40 years that youwouldn’t recognize the place.

Check Out WhatYou’ve Been Missing

Grapes of Missouri• Norton/Cynthiana (sin-thee-ana) Norton grapes produce a

rich, full-bodied dry red wine that can be similar in style toCabernet Sauvignon, with the spicy overtones of aZinfandel, and berry flavors that go nicely with red meat, smoked meat and wild game. The wine may be bottled aseither a Cynthiana or Norton.

• Chambourcin (sham-bor-san) Produces a medium-bodiedred wine similar to a Pinot Noir, with a fruity aroma andcherry and earthy/spicy complexities. Serve with barbecue, pork, and pasta dishes.

• Chardonel (shahr-du-nel) As a cross of the famedChardonnay grape with the popular Seyval, Chardonel isusually barrel fermented, very dry and full bodied. This isgreat with heavier seafood dishes, as well as chicken withcream sauces.

• Vidal (vee-dahl) Used to make a dry to semi-dry, full-bod-ied wine with fruity characteristics, somewhat like Italiandry whites. Vidal's clean citrus flavors of lemon and grape-fruit create a nicely balanced wine that's perfect withseafood or poultry.

• Vignoles (veen-yole) One of Missouri's most versatile whitegrapes,Vignoles produces wines ranging from dry to sweetlate harvest dessert wines. Vignoles' luscious floral aromaand fruity flavors of pineapple and apricot are reminiscentof German Riesling. Ideal with Chinese food, fresh fruit, and fruit desserts.
