THE work of 24 recent vi-sual arts graduates fromevery Australian state andterritory will be presentedacross all of PICA’s galleryspaces from May 2 to July5 as part of the 29thHatched: National Gradu-ate Show.
Tertiary art schoolsacross Australia nominatedarts graduates for the show, with the final selectionmade by a panel of artistsand arts professionals fromaround Australia.
This year’s panel in-cluded artist NathanBeard, National Gallery ofVictoria Indigenous artcurator Hannah Presley, and Megan Monte, direc-tor of Cement Fondu inSydney.
“The most rewardingtakeaway from the selec-tion process for Hatched2020 was seeing how manyartists are emerging fromtheir institutions withuniquely engaged andthoughtful perspectivessurrounding an overlap-ping variety of timelythemes,” Beard said.
Works on display inthis year’s Hatched featurea broad range of contempo-rary practice, including in-stallations, audio/soundworks, photography, sculp-ture, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and graffiti.
Many of the worksshare ideas around socialconstructs, individual iden-tity and cultural heritage.
An artist featured inHatched will be invited totake up a residency in part-nership with North Metro-politan Tafe to build con-
nections between interstateand Perth-based artists.
The winner of the$50,000 Schenberg Art Fel-lowship will be announcedon opening night, whichwill be a free event withlive entertainment and anoutdoor bar.
PICA director Amy Bar-rett-Lennard said Hatchedwas a significant way PICAcould support emergingAustralian artists.
“Hatched frequentlyprovides artists with theirfirst opportunity to presentwork within a supportive
and professional publicgallery environment, aswell as providing an in-stant network of peersacross the country,” shesaid.
“The impact of these ex-periences cannot be under-estimated.”
OPENINGSOON
CONCRETE works will
feature in an exhibition
opening next month at
Holmes a Court Gallery
@ no. 10 in West Perth.
Concrete Expanded con-
siders the effects of
colour, design, pattern
and shape through works
of geometric abstraction.
It suggests an expansion
of the genre of concrete
art that initially had a
vibrant local explosion
on the streets of Freman-
tle in the early 2000s.
Large-scale, hard edged,
minimal, abstract and
pure colour paintings are
joined by three-dimen-
sional wall-works, actual
concrete sculptures and
light sculptures.
Artists on show include
Consuelo Cavaniglia,
Jennifer Cochrane,
Janenne Eaton, Robert
Hunter, Brian McKay,
Trevor Richards, Dou-
glas Sheerer, Helen
Smith, Trevor Vickers
and Josh Webb.
The exhibition will have
works from the Janet
Holmes a Court Collec-
tion and some works will
be available for pur-
chase.
The exhibition will be
opened by Janet Holmes
a Court on April 3 and
close on May 9.

Street, West Perth, and
