CHAMPIONS PLAYGROUND Week #1: Champions Playzone

DATE: 4th

& 5th

June 2016 What is a champions playzone without classic funfair games. This week, we

bring into GKidz some of the most ageless and fun-filled games of all time

which will unequivocally bring smiles and let our “playground” ring with

laughter.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The focus of this week’s games is to foster teambuilding amongst groups

through fun and encouraging each other to win points for their groups.

Children will experience the importance of cooperation and collaboration

through the game stations.

Power Cards:

Every week except for the 3rd week, every winning team will receive 2 “Power

Cards” while the losing team will receive 1 “Power Card”. These Power Cards,

which carry “special abilities”, will be collected by the groups to be used in

the finale game, Champions Face Off on the 4th week of the June Holiday

Program. Leaders please keep all the power cards that your group has won.

The Power cards are:

Note to Leaders:

For this week’s station games, groups with smaller number of children

should be combined such that there are similar numbers of players among

teams.

(The maximum nos. of groups to play for Ks will be 4 and for P1-3 is 8)

Note: your TLs will inform you during briefing.

The programme will pit children of the same age group against one

another to ensure safety.

i.e. Ks against Ks; P1s against P1s, etc.

Most importantly, please ensure safety first at all times as many of the

games are high-energy games, which may prompt injuries. If you notice

that the game is getting too rough/out of hand, please stop all games at

your station immediately.

Team Leader’s Role:

Create a rotation system to move the small groups from one game station to

another. There are a total of 3 game stations where 4 groups can play. E.g.

Station 1 Station 2 Station 3

Team A Team B Team C

Team B Team C Team A

Team C Team A Team B

Leaders’ Role:

1. Enforce safety and order as the children move from one game station

location to another. Always do a headcount when you reach a new game

station.

2. Be familiar with the task of each station. Please read ahead and do not

help the children unless they are stuck.

3. Ensure that play at each station to end promptly by 20 min, then use the

next 10 min to reset the station to how it was and allow children to rest or

use the washroom.

What is it?

Just like David, you will be facing several Goliaths now in front of you and it is

your duty as champions to overcome these Goliaths. David had used a

slingshot to fling a stone at Goliath and won the battle. So, to claim victory

over these Goliaths, we have prepared several stone-like bags as your

weapons for you to aim at the Goliaths’ heads. Each hit at the Goliath’s face

will earn you points accordingly. Your goal is to earn as many points as a

team and you are only given 5 minutes to do so.

How to play?

Objective:

To score the highest amount of points collectively as a group by hitting the

highest areas on the hanged face of Goliath.

Gameplay:

Get the groups to go to their respective lanes

i.e. Group 1 to lane 1, Group 2 to lane 2, etc.

At each lane, children are to line up in a single line behind the marking on

the ground. (The Holiday program committee members will set up this with

help from some leaders)

i.e. 3m mark (P1-3) and 2m (K1-2)

Once the children are ready, the first child from each lane will pick up 1

bean bag from the floor and toss it at Goliath’s face. The goal is to reach

for the highest rung.

After the child has tossed the 2 beanbags allocated to his/her the child

will have to pick up the thrown bean bag and return it to its original

position; then move to the back of their respective lanes. The turn is then

passed to the child next in line who will also have 2 tosses. The process

continues until everyone has had his/her turn.

Each group is given 5 minutes to toss their bean bags.

After 5 minutes, leaders will stop the game and tabulate the scores for

that level.

The group then moves on to the next level.

Levels of Difficulty

P1-3 K1-2

Level 1 3 m 2 m

Level 2 4 m 2.5 m

Level 3 5 m 3 m

Use masking tape to mark out the distance.

Rules

Always stand behind the line to toss the bean bags. Crossing any line will

disqualify the child from that round.

Each child is entitled to only 2 tosses per turn.

If the group is small, the children will be able to toss more times, if 5

minutes is still not up.

Only toss the bean bags forward, NOT to any other directions.

Do not fight for the bean bags or snatch other group’s bean bags.

Do not toss the bean bags when another child is picking up the bean bag.

How to Win?

For every hit on Goliath’s face, the group will earn themselves the amount

of points stated on his face.

If the child misses, no point will be awarded.

The group with the most points will be declared the winner.

1st place: Pick 2 ‘Power Cards’

1st runner up: Pick 1 ‘Power Cards’

Suntec – Room 328 [Ks]

Time Allocation

Instructions 5 min

Play Time 15 min

Clean up/set-up and movement 10 min

Total 30 min

What is it?

Standing firm is an important quality of excellence. With teamwork and unity,

a group of individuals can remain unmoved and even overcome the

struggles and difficulties by standing firm together.

How to Play?

Objective

To tug the rope and win Power Cards, a soft toy will hang in the middle of the

rope. Each team must tug the rope and pull the soft toy towards one’s own

team. Once the team wins at least 2 out of 3 tries they will receive 2 Power

cards.

GKidz will provide

the “rope”: 18 pieces of Good Morning towels knotted end-to-end

together to form a “rope” for tugging and a soft toy to be tied in the

middle.

Gameplay

A total of 3 rounds will be played.

*more rounds can be included on leaders’ discretions if time permits

Page 7: Timothy Club June Holiday Program · Rafia strings (already tied to the plates for the above structure) Paper plates with print outs of Goliath face (8 per lane) Masking tape (for

A leader is appointed the referee (i.e. to start/end/declare winner) of the

game.

Leaders will demonstrate how to hold and to pull the rope.

(For safety, the rope must go under the arms. Actions such as pulling the

rope over the shoulders will be considered a foul.)

Leaders will need to position the first child of their team 2 knots away from

the middle of the rope on either side of the playing field.

The winning lines for each team will be indicated by the masking tape

(picture above).

Leaders will line the rest of the team up in a single file behind the first child.

Divide the group into 2 sub team if your group is too big.

The first team that manages to pull the soft toy towards the team across

the masking tape line wins that round (picture below).

The group that wins will pick 2 ‘Power Cards’ and the runner up will pick 1

‘Power Card’.

In the event of a draw (because of even number of games played), the

referee will initiate ONE game of rock-paper-scissors. The winning team

takes 2 ‘power cards’, while the other takes 1.

Note to Leaders

Please make sure that you are playing against a group of similar standard

(i.e. K1 vs K2, P1 vs P1/P2). This is to ensure that children of both teams are

as evenly matched on size as possible.

Leaders should ensure that both teams are evenly matched on the

numbers of players.

At the end of the game, leaders please ensure clean up challenge as you

ask the children to pick up the crushed papers and any litter. DEBRIEF (in your small group) Leader: Wow! That was quite the playground wasn’t it? It was so tiring, but I

am sure it was more fun than tiring right? Give me a thumbs-up if you agree

with me that it was fun!

Let children respond.

Leaders to check in especially with those who did not have a positive

experience and to process with the child by helping child to find positivity in

the whole experience. Pick out the points throughout the activities that the

child laughed with his/her friends.

Leader: I’m sure there was one game or a part of the game which you had

fun in. What about the company of your group members? That must have

made the games fun and ultimately that is what is most important during this

June Holiday Programme – to “play” with your friends.

Leader: Do you remember what is the theme of this June Holiday program?

Allow children to respond.

Leader: Yes! It is the Champions playground. And this week, we the

champions got to play to our hearts’ content. I wanted to ask all of you; in

the midst of all the fun, what are some of the values and good qualities

which you have learnt about champions?

Page 12: Timothy Club June Holiday Program · Rafia strings (already tied to the plates for the above structure) Paper plates with print outs of Goliath face (8 per lane) Masking tape (for

Allow children to respond and briefly address the qualities they have shared.

Affirm those who shared.

[Possible responses: perseverance, teamwork, cooperation, participation,

unity]

Leader: Absolutely right! From the games that we played today, I realised

that first and foremost, champions must work together in other to win

together. One person will never be able to score enough points at the David

and Goliath station or the tug-of-war. Together we can make the game more

fun and earn more points. And I must say I am very happy that all of you

demonstrated teamwork (or any other related qualities that your group

demonstrated). Indeed, a champion accepts his/her teammates for who

they are and learn to work together with them in order to win or be successful.
