TEACHINGVISIONANDPHILOSOPHYTeachingVisionToberecognizedbymystudentsashavingmadeadifferenceintheirlivesthroughmyteachingandtherebybeingrecognizedbymypeersasapremierteacher.MyTeachingPhilosophyTeachingintheCollegeofEngineering/ComputerScience’sIndustrialEngineeringandManagementSystemDepartment(IEMS),Iaimtoteachstudentstobeprofessionalpracticingengineerswhoapplythefundamentalengineeringprocesstoallendeavors.Myteachingphilosophyisfortheprofessortoproactivelymodelbehaviorconsistentwithanethical,practicingengineer;andforthestudentstobeactivelyengagedinlearning,applying,andcreatingknowledge.Idemonstratethisphilosophybycontinuouslyimprovingthecoursewithfeedbackfromstudents,peers,andindustryandincludingreal-worldexamples.Iuseaplan-do-study-act(PDSA)teachingprocess.ThedescriptionandevaluationofthisteachingapproachwaspublishedinIEEETransactionsonEngineeringEducation.Iengagestudentsingroupknowledgecreationusingthecooperativelearningconcepts—thiswaspublishedinJournalofFacultyDevelopmentandReviewofScience,Technology,andSustainableDevelopment.Todevelopconceptual,qualitative,synthesis,andcommunicationskills,Ihavethestudentscompletetake-homeessayexams,researchpapers,andgroupprojects.Toprovidemeaningfulevaluationandfeedback,Ipersonallygradealloftheseprojectsandexaminations.Consistentwithmyteachingphilosophy,Ihaveattendedshortcoursesandseminarstobuildmyskills,forexample,1)AssessingStudentOutcomes,CenterforEducationDevelopment,1997;2)1997NASAEducator'sRetreat,1997;3)CooperativeLearning,SoutheasternCenterforCooperativeLearning,1996-97;4)Seriesofinteractiveinstructionclasses,UCF'sITV,1997;and5)DistanceEducationintheEngineeringCoreattheUniversityofIllinois,UCF,1996.IsupportthespecialcourserequirementsfortheteachingassignmentstosupportthegraduateprogramswithintheIndustrialEngineeringandManagementSystemsDepartment.Thegraduateprogramfocusesonpracticingengineerswhoareworkingfulltimeandreturningtoschooltoupgradetheirskills.Theimplicationsforteachingtheadultlearnersincludestudents:needingtodeveloptheabilitytoapplytheengineeringprocesstotheengineeringmanagementprocess;needingtodevelopqualitative,conceptual,synthesisskillsinadditiontothequantitativeanalytic;takingclassesforthefirsttimeinsomeyears;takingclassesatnightaftertheycompletetheirworkday;andmissinglecturesduetoworkandtravelrequirements.Myspecialteachingrequirementsbasedontheseimplicationsinclude:1)teachingclassesatnightafterthestudentscompletetheirworkday;2)conductingclassesatoff-campussites(e.g.,theKennedySpaceCenter,STRICOM,LockheedMartin,Fed-Ex,CirentSemiconductor)orviaFEEDS;and3)developingPowerpointhandoutsforeachlecturetofocustheinclassperiodondiscussionsofhowtoapplytheconceptstotheworkplaceandtofacilitateFEEDSandstudenttravelrequirements.
