A diligent and responsible mechanical engineering graduate seeking an entry-level position in an engineering company, which will utilise the organisational, team working and creativity skills established during my degree. I am adaptable to different working conditions, self-motivated, and always eager to learn and improve, with experience in researching and report writing, and a passion for engineering, music, hiking and the outdoors.

Education

2011 – June 2015 University of Bristol, 2:1 (68%) in Mechanical Engineering, MEng

Large amount of experience with Autodesk Inventor, Matlab, formal report writing and working as part of a team. Fourth year modules include: Advanced Dynamics, Systems and Control, Process Engineering and Power Generation.

Used Autodesk Inventor Professional and Matlab throughout my degree for general design work. Most notably, I designed a Macpherson-Strut car suspension system, as well as many of the fluid inerter designs for my 4th year project, in Autodesk. And in Matlab, analysed the optimum area to aim on a dart board for differing levels of player ability, and coded the motion of a fired projectile taking into account drag and air density changes, as well as modelling and optimising MDOF m-k-c/inerter building systems to reduce vibration.

2006 – 2011 Portsmouth Grammar School

A-levels: Maths (A*), Further Maths (B), Physics (A), Geology (B), Music (A)GCSEs: 6 A*’s, 4 A’s with an A in Additional Maths

Work Experience

Summer 2014 Researcher - University of Bristol

Worked in the dynamics and control department, on a project aiming to reduce building vibration due to earthquakes

Developed a method of determining the optimum values for inerter, damping and stiffness components of a Tuned-Inerter-Damper system to reduce extensive vibration in multi-storey buildings.

The multi storey building was modelled in Matlab using equations governing a mass/inerter spring damper system, represented in state space form. A transfer function relating the top floor vibration amplitude to the ground floor amplitude was derived and hence a code producing a bode plot of this FRF function was produced.

The other codes dealt with optimising certain parameters such as the stiffness and inertance values, using the patternsearch algorithm integrated into the optimisation code. The overall result were graphs relating optimum magnitude reduction, with the corresponding inertance and stiffness values.

Persisted in utilising different techniques to speed up the coding process whilst ensuring a sound analysis of the building system remained

Widened experience with Matlab, Latex, and optimization tools, and delivered a technical report highlighting optimum system configurations

2013 – Present University third and fourth year projects

Final year group project concerns the design, building and testing of acceleration resisting devices called inerters, using fluid rather than mechanical components

Brainstorming design ideas, deriving equations and working in the laboratory as a group has improved my communication, listening and workshop skills

Third year individual project dealt with modelling finger joint motion, contributing to the design of a mechatronic glove for stroke patients

Utilised NX modelling software to find the centre of rotation of joints using a technique of fitting circles to bone cross sections. Collaborating with a wider team whilst producing an individual report

2010 – 2013 House staff - The Goodwood Estate

Variety of roles including bar work, waitering, drinks receptions, and back of house work. This high pressure environment expanded my experience of working as a team and individually in fast paced, time crucial situations

Individually responsible for tables at high profile events, continually dealing with customer needs swiftly with effective communication skills

2009 – 2010 Volunteer - Weald and Downland Open Air Museum (West Sussex)

Volunteering weekly, performing a range of tasks, such as gift shop and back of house work, and greeting visitors at large events, provided me with excellent experience of conversing with members of the public on a regular basis

Responsibilities, achievements and other interests

University of Bristol Expedition Society

Dedicated member throughout university due to a passion for the outdoors and adventure. Proficient user of a map and compass. Mountain Leader and First Aid trained

Served as Expeditions Officer on the 2013 - 2014 Committee, which involved organising many expeditions, including trips to Scotland and Morocco, as well as teaching members navigation

Taking command of groups of people has enhanced my communication skills, and my ability to take decisive action in potentially hazardous situations in a calm and professional manner

As a respectable walk leader, I have developed skills such as improving team morale, and making important decisions weighing up, amongst other things, team experience, weather, and safety

Music

Always expressing a passion for music, I achieved grade 8 on both the violin and drum kit in 2010 and in recent years have been focussing on expanding my solo violin repertoire and orchestral performing. Attaining violin proficiency has required much patience and self-discipline

A music scholar at school, I am currently leader of the Bristol University Symphonia orchestra and a section leader in the Barbershop society, and have performed in a large number of concerts

Taking leading roles in orchestras and ensembles has required me to demonstrate confidence and commitment to other members, whilst maintaining a high level of technical proficiency

Travelling

I have backpacked extensively in the UK’s national parks, as well as Morocco and the Alps and enjoy organising camping/hiking trips and micro-adventures. These, along with an eastern European inter-railing trip, a number of ski trips, and trips to Iceland and the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, have widened my experience of different cultures and landscapes

Sport, fitness and leisure

Enjoy road cycling, averaging 40 miles per week. Keen squash, golf, and tennis player, and enjoy long distance walking and running, having completed the 2012 Bristol 10k. This varied and active lifestyle is important for a keeping a healthy mind as well as for physical fitness. Enjoy reading scientific and music books, listening to a wide variety of music and attending classical concerts
