How big is the problem for UK employers?

• In 2011 nearly two-fifths of UK employers overall (50% in the public sector) report that stress-related absence has increased over the past year1

• Work-related stress caused workers in Great Britain to lose 10.8 million working days in 2010/11. On average each person suffering from this condition took 27 days off work2

What is stress? The HSE definition of work place stress is:

• "The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work."3

• Stress is not an illness – it is a state. However, if stress becomes too excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop.3

What are the symptoms of stress?

• how your body may react: breathlessness, headaches, high blood pressure, constant tiredness, restlessness, sleeping problems

• how you may feel: aggressive, irritable, depressed, fearing failure, dreading the future, a loss of interest in others

• how you may behave: difficulty making decisions, avoiding difficult situations, difficulty concentrating, denying there's a problem4

Why tackle stress at work?

• quality of working life: employees feel happier at work and perform better

• management of change: introducing a new pay system or new patterns of work are easier when ‘stress’ is managed effectively

• employment relations: problems can be resolved at work rather than at an employment tribunal

• attendance and sickness: attendance levels go up and sickness absence goes down5
