Incorporating themes into the curriculum provides a planned redundancy to help the children learn new vocabulary and encourage ongoing joint planning and discussion.
Theme: Airplanes
Ideas for Goals:
• Learn and use new and familiar vocabulary• Learn and use new and familiar sentence structures• Interact with peers• Sequence familiar outcomes• Expand knowledge about the world
Incorporating the Theme into Centers and Activities
• Dramatic Play – Airplaneo Materials : Seatbelts (men’s ties), luggage, cash
register, tickets, envelops, counter, instrument panel, chairs, pilot hat, trays, plates and glasses with pretend food, dolls, carts, maps, globes, travel magazines
o Roles : Pilot and co-pilot, flight attendants, passengers, clerks at the ticket counter, security check
o Sequences : planning and packing, buying tickets, going through security, handing over the boarding pass, boarding the plane, asking for help to find a seat and buckling up, enjoying a beverage, looking out the window at the world below, serving passengers, flying the plane, landing, de-boarding, experiencing the new location before returning home…
o Select your words based on the developmental level of the children. For children who are just
