The coldest night of the HOLE SEASONWe had been talking about this trip for ages. Out of the corner of my eye I was watching the weather report while going over my checklist one last time. Sure enough, Ole Mother Nature was pissed off again. But if we could just get past Fargo, ND, we’d be in the clear.

As luck would have it, we got caught in Jamestown, ND, between two nasty, encroaching blizzards. The state closed I-94 and all major roads. It looked doubtful that we’d make Devils Lake, even on backroads. So

we ducked into the nearest motel & hunkered down. But none of us wanted to sit around and play cards. We were in North Dakota for one reason—walleyes.

The next morning we suited up, threw the truck into 4-wheel drive and set out to explore the area on

county roads. On the way we pulled two vehicles out of the ditch and managed to get some inside information. Seems the walleyes were smacking Jiggin’ Raps on ‘Lake X’ just before the storm. “Just look for the piles of sunken brush,” said the good-natured old angler. He also gave us a few land markers for triangulation that I can’t disclose.

Once to Lake X we pulled our Polaris sleds out of the trailer and hitched up our Otter Thermal Shelters. We spent the next couple hours criss-crossing Lake X, popping holes like madmen. Finally, just like the old-timer had said, we spotted the underwater brush (which not by coincidence resembled a pile of old Christmas trees), with pods of healthy ‘eyes hovering in and around the wood. Game on.

That first drop was maybe the most memorable. Whack! My buddy Big Mike’s face lit up as we watched that solid 5-pound fish inhale the Jiggin’ Rap. There was an expletive yelled, too, so loud that our other buddies trudged over and poked their heads in our shack.

“Sure is warm in here … nice fish … and jeez, look at the fish on your camera!” our buddy who goes by the handle “Refill” observed. “Gotta get a house like this. We’re freezing, and not a bite.”

Feeling guilty, we had them move their non-insulated house near our spot and we all took turns switching houses to get everyone warm. And we caught fish. Lots of ‘em.

Over the next three days—as I-94 remained closed—we were “stranded” in Central North Dakota. But no one bellyached. After all, we had found what we came for—legendary prairie walleyes.
