• The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza (also called flu) viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs.

• It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

• Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.

• A person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

Type A• Type A flu are capable of infecting animals, although it is

more common for people to suffer the ailments associated with this type of flu.

• They cause the annual flu epidemic that have up to 20% of the population sniffling, coughing, and running high fevers.

Type B• Unlike type A flu viruses, Type B is found only in humans.

• Generally, type B flu cause a less severe reaction that type A flu virus.

Type C• Type C flu virus are also found in people.

• However, they are milder than either type A or B.

• People do not become very ill from the type C flu virus.

to 20% of the population is diagnosed with flu.

• Approximately 2,00,000 people are hospitalized each year because of flu complications.

• During 2009-2010 a new and very different flu virus (called H1N1, or swine flu) spread worldwide, causing the first flu pandemic in more than 40 years.

Who should get Vaccinated?• Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a

flu vaccine.

• While everyone should get a flu vaccine, it’s specially important for some people to get vaccinated. People who at high risk of developing serious

complications (like pneumonia) if they get sick with flu.

Pregnant women. People younger than 5 years and people 65 years

and older.

Preventive Measures• The best way to prevent flu is to get vaccinated each year. It

helps your body build defenses it needs to protect you from the flu.

• Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often as it limits the spread of many illnesses. Flu viruses can live on your hand for five minutes.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

• Get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

• Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

• Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
