the Airport
Following comprehensive modernization and the construction of an impressive new passenger terminal, the Airport – named after the great humanitarian, the Albanian nun Mother Teresa (Nënë Tereza) – is now an up-to-date, customer-friendly, safe and secure civil aviation hub, a claim confirmed by international organizations and experienced airline companies.
Since 23 April 2005, the Airport has been managed privately. Within the framework of a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) concession, a new operating company became responsible for running the Airport, with all the rights of an owner, and also for undertaking construction and development. At the end of the concession period, in 2025, the Airport will be transferred back to the Albanian state.
Welcome to Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza
Situated about 17 kilometers from the Albanian capital, Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza is
Albania’s most important air transport hub. It connects this south-eastern European country with
Europe’s major business centers and, among its many contributions, is supporting the development
of tourism along Albania’s nearly 450-kilometer-long Mediterranean coastline. During 2007, the
Airport set new records in passenger numbers, air traffic movements and cargo handled. Currently,
14 airline companies link Tirana with 29 destinations.

Tirana International Airport SHPK (TIA), formerly Tirana Airport Partners,
has set itself the goal of running the country’s only international airport in
accordance with the highest standards of safety, security and service, creating
new flight connections and developing the on-site facilities.
In March 2007, with the opening of the new passenger terminal, the centerpiece of the modernization work was concluded. Prior to this, a new fast road linking the Airport to the capital city was completed. In line with the development of passenger traffic, TIA is now commencing the expansion phase of the terminal.

Albania
Brief introduction to Albania
Albania is one of the most interesting destinations in the region. Explored by
very few people, Albania offers an inspiring blend of civilizations and cultures
that make this European country unique.
8
The country has a beautiful coastline stretching along the Adriatic Sea from the Montenegrin border south to the bay of Vlora. From here southwards the coast is rugged, with rocky coves characteristic of a narrow coastal strip that lies against a dramatic backdrop of steeply rising tall mountains.
Albania’s numerous mountains and rivers offer many possibilities for sports tourism,
including many outdoor activities, as well as simply enjoying the beauty of nature.
The country’s history and culture is fascinating. Several Albanian cities retain an appearance that has changed little over many generations and which conserve in their midst remains that date back more than two thousand years. Numerous archeological sites make the country very attractive for special interest tourism.

history of the Airport
10
history of the Airport
Tirana Airport was constructed between 1955 and 1957 and operated initially under the name of
Rinas Airport. Up until the fall of the communist regime at the beginning of the 1990s the traffic
through Rinas Airport was very limited. With the opening up of the country to the rest of the world,
accompanied by a big efflux of Albanian citizens to live and work abroad, the number of passengers
using the Airport increased substantially.
Facing a pressing need for enhancing and expanding the Airport, Albania’s government issued an invitation to international investors to undertake construction of a new terminal and other facilities and also to assume responsibility for operations. An international bidding procedure was initiated, and won by the consortium of Tirana Airport Partners (now the management company Tirana International Airport SHPK), and on 23 April 2005, the new company took over the management of the Airport.
Since then, Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza has changed radically. All the facilities have been modernized and a new passenger terminal has been erected, so that international standards are now the norm in terms of service, infrastructure and respect for environment and social development.
11
expansion and modernization
12
13From the moment the Concession Agreement commenced, TIA has been very successful in fulfill-
ing its obligations in accordance with the Agreement. During 2007, TIA inaugurated either on or
ahead of time its new passenger terminal and other infrastructural facilities. It also achieved many
other successes that testify to continuous growth in its performance. Before year end the Airport
welcomed its one millionth passenger, again ahead of schedule.
Record figures have also been registered for the amount of cargo handled and in the number of air traffic movements. Currently, fourteen airline companies fly to and from Tirana International Airport, connecting the Albanian capital with 29 destinations in different countries.
In addition, there have been upgrades and repairs that include conversion of the old terminal into TIA administration offices as well as upgrades to the airfield itself.
All of the developments taking place at the Airport are being implemented very carefully, ensuring that the environment and social development of the residential areas around the Airport are considered in all decisions that are taken.
The increases recorded in the number of passengers and in other areas of business have led to a decision to undertake further investments into the Airport infrastructure. The second phase of modernization has begun, and plans are underway to expand the new terminal (allowed for by the ingenious initial design of the Malaysian architect Hin Tan) and to construct new facilities. A further EUR 20 – 30 million will be invested in TIA by the year 2009. The work will start in the first months of 2008 and will substantially increase the Airport’s annual passenger capacity.
Quality standards
TIA has designed a Quality Policy, aiming at fulfilling top international standards
of facilities, safety, security and comfort, and in doing so showing its attentiveness
to the satisfaction of both passengers and airlines, as well as of other users.
TIA ensures that its facilities, equipment and staff are available round the clock in order to operate the Airport and provide excellent customers’ service.
TIA offers access facilities for people with special needs and within the terminal there is a health center open 24 hours a day for the emergency needs of passengers.
TIA undertakes regular customer surveys in order to assess the level of customer satisfaction with the services provided. In the opinion of its customers, TIA offers very good service quality. In particular, ease of access, the quality of service facilities, security inspection and pre-flight services were rated very highly by customers, regardless of nationality or the time of day the Airport was being used.
14
Marketing
TIA has adopted a policy of incentives for airlines to launch new routes to
and from Tirana. The strong traffic development shows that this policy is
very successful.
Other qualities that make TIA an attractive destination for airlines include
the following:
• Flexibility TIA, in cooperation with the General
Directorate of Civil Aviation of Albania, offers flexibility in slot allocation.
• Operating hours The Airport offers 24-hour operations,
7 days a week.
• Excellence in service provision Our teams are coordinated perfectly
to maximize efficiency and flexibility. Short turn-around times, rapid baggage delivery, well-trained personnel, etc., are just a few of the expectations that an airline demands and which TIA offers.

16Cargo
Air freight in Albania is in competition with other means of transport and
until today its market share has been small. Nevertheless, there has been a
substantial increase in the sector over the last few years. In 2007, following the
opening of the new cargo terminal, TIA recorded an increase of 65 percent in
the amount of cargo handled compared with the previous year, which also saw
a substantial increase compared with 2005. In the near future, TIA expects
further increases in cargo figures to be recorded thanks to the radically
improved infrastructure in the new building and developments taking place
near to the Airport.
