PRODUCTS AT CERTAIN TIMES OR UNDER CERTAIN ROAD CONDITIONS.

In these states, failure to carry and/or use winter traction products as required by localauthorities can result in fines and/or other penalties. These chain laws are the most compli‑

cated for commercial vehicles, specifically tractor‑trailer combinations.

TIRE CHAINS, CABLE CHAINS AND OTHER WINTER TRACTION DEVICES ARE LEGAL IN EVERY STATE AND PROVINCE IN NORTH AMERICA.

HOW TO READ YOUR TIRE SIZE: .................................................................................................................................................................................

Tire size must be known in order to select a traction product. On most tires the size will look like this:

P225/75R16. This example indicates that the tire is 225mm wide, has an aspect ratio of 75% and is mounted on a wheel that is 16 inches in diameter. All of these numbers are critical in helping to find the correct traction product. The letter “P” (for passenger), “LT” (for light truck) and “R” (for radial) that sometimes appear with these numbers are much less important.

S.A.E. Class “S” is the Society of Automotive Engineersʼ definition for the least amount of space that should be provided around the drive tires of any vehicle to accommodate the use of a winter tractionproduct. Class “S” clearance requires 15mm (0.59”) clearance from thesidewall (Y) and 37mm (1.46”) clearance from the treadface (X). Theminimum clearance specified must be maintained around fenders,braces, suspension parts, strut housings, brake components, splashpans and fuel and brake lines.

Most of todayʼs newer vehicles including passenger cars, light trucks, crossovers and SUVs will require Class “S” products. Itʼs important that consumers refer to their ownerʼs manual for information pertaining to their specific vehicleʼs clearance requirements before using anywinter traction product.
