Department of Microbiology

PREFACE

This brochure is intended to provide an insight into the Department of Microbiology,

Bharathidasan University for the benefit of prospective students, alumni, industries and the

public. We hope this would convey the versatile dynamism and the infective enthusiasm of

the young and active Microbiology Department. As a result of emphasis on research that

erases the traditional academic boundaries, we collaborate closely with other departments of

Bharathidasan University as well as other universities, institutions and industries within and

outside the country.

The department is reverberating with active research in both basic and applied aspects of

microbiology encompassing wide areas such as biodiversity; ecobiology; & molecular

taxonomy including DNA fingerprinting of bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and

microalgae; establishment of microbial repository; development of pharmaceuticals,

nutraceuticals and bioenergy from various microbes. We work also on microbial

nanoparticles; leptospirosis; molecular diagnostics; metagenomics; probiotics; marine

bacterial endosymbionts and rhizosphere biology.

The department is unique in having a host of faculty trained in advanced areas of research

in different countries around the world. They are now engaged in developing the required

manpower on modern microbiology, molecular biology and biotechnology in this country.

The most important aim of the department is to motivate, encourage, enable and empower the

student community. The educational process in the department is based on close student-

faculty interaction which is bidirectional. All these lead to transition from student to peer,

novice to authority and stranger to friend. No single formula guides this process. It is the

dedication of the faculty, cooperation among stakeholders and the product of the intellectual

climate of the department.

I look forward to welcoming you in the Department of Microbiology very soon.

Professor and Head

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The department emerged as a component of the School of Life Sciences in 1992 with

Microbiology as one of the optional subjects in the Five-year Integrated M.Sc. Life Sciences

Program. An exclusive two year post graduate course on Microbiology was started during

1994. Now, twenty students are admitted every year on merit cum reservation basis and the

course structure is so framed as to enable the students to continue in research or seek

employment or become an entrepreneur. So far, more than 60 of them have joined Ph.D.

programs and others are in employment in India and outside. Since June 2007, the present

Department of Microbiology was delinked from NFMC into a separate full-fledged

department and Full Time M.Phil course was started in the same year. Within a short span of

time the Department had procured both basic and advanced instrumentation facilities from

the UGC and other funding agencies for successfully running the M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D.

programs. It is a pride and an additional feather to the cap of the university that in 2016, the

DBT has again funded a major infrastructural facility called National Repository for

Microalgae and Cyanobacteria (NRMC) with a part replacing the NFMC for marine and the

other part for the Department of Microbiology for freshwater Microalgae and Cyanobacteria.

This is housed in a new and separate building fully equipped to maintain the germplasm and

carry out basic as well as applied research on these organisms.

The faculty of the Department are fully committed to provide high quality education at

Post-graduate and Research levels and are well recognized for their research contributions at

National and International Levels. They have successfully competed and obtained research

projects with grants totalling ~Rs. 10 crores so far from various government funding

agencies viz.: DOD (MoES), DBT, DST, ICMR, CSIR, UGC, IFS and INSA. Recently the

department has received UGC-Non-SAP, DST-FIST and DST-PURSE funds for the

establishment of state of art research equipment.

The faculty in the department are all personally equipped with exposure to the best

laboratories in the world and have risen to the level of editing professional journals;

reviewing research publications; grant proposals; receive fellowships and awards from

reputed institutions and sit in committees constituted by the Government of India as members

as well as Chairman.

Page 6: Tiruchirappalli 620 024, Tamil Nadu, India · UGC Non-SAP DST FIST (Leve-lI) DST-PURSE MHRD RUSA ... leptospirosis Role of HIV tat on astrocytes and its impact on neurodegeneration

6

To confirm the saying “Like begets like”, the students of the department excel by

themselves in team spirit and winning laurels and fellowships like:

SERB N-PDF, DSKPDF, DST Fast Track Young Scientist Fellowship, CSIR, ICMR

Fellowships, DST-INSPIRE Fellowship, Non-SAP Fellowship, Jawaharlal Nehru

Memorial Fund, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellwoship, Maoulana Azad Minority

Fellowship, University Research Fellowship and TNSCST student projects for M.Sc

students.

As the proof of the pudding is in eating, the quality of the level of research in the

department will be evident from the publications in reputed, peer reviewed, high impact

journals which abound from this department. The department not content with self-

development, tries its best to develop others by conducting regularly training workshops;

seminars; symposia; refresher courses; summer courses; DST-INSPIRE programs for school

students etc. to benefit the entire country. Students for their part regularly conduct from 2007,

annual intercollegiate meet to train and test talent amongst students of colleges and

departments of the universities called Cenitterz.

VISION:

To set a global standard in research and teaching of Microbiology and be the pioneer worthy

of emulation.

Mission:

To provide wholesome experience and knowledge to students to develop into

exemplary leaders of the future in academic and outside arena.

To pursue and promote world-class research and training at the frontiers of

microbiology

To move up through International & national alliances and collaborative initiatives to

excel globally in Microbiology and Biotechnology research and education.

Quality Policy

To pursue standards of excellence in research, teaching, training & consultancy

and remain accountable through continuous self-assessment and improvement. To be

open to constructive criticism and learn from experience.

M.Sc., Microbiology

A Post-graduate course in Microbiology is being conducted since 1994. To this course 25

students are selected every year based on the entrance examination and under-graduate

marks. Any science graduate who has completed atleast one paper in biology is eligible for

this course. This is unique in that it gives opportunity to science graduate, who have not

majored in biology but are capable to compete and get into Microbiology if they are

interested. The syllabus has been framed in such a manner that after completing the course,

the students can either do research, get employed in Microbiology related jobs, or be their

own employers.

Students complete 14 core papers including lab courses and a self study review paper in three

semesters. The fourth semester is dedicated to the project work where the students choose a

topic of their interest, carry out research in either Microbiology department or other

institutions of repute and submit their findings in the form of a dissertation. The students will

present their work in public seminar and a viva-voce will be conducted by outside experts.

From 2002-2003, choice based credit system with electives is being offered.

Ph.D., Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology is offering Ph.D. Microbiology (Full-time/Part-time) course

since 1994. The duration of the Ph.D. program shall be three to five years consisting of three

course work papers. There are five eminent faculties offering excellent opportunities for

research in thrust areas of Microbiology such as Medical Microbiology, Microbial

Biodiversity and Bioenergy, Rhizosphere Biology, Molecular Evolution of Microorganisms

and Bioprocessing Technology.
