May 2013 News Tolland Family Resource Center

May Highlights May 1 Preschool Field Trip to

the Lutz Museum

May 7 Annual Budget Referendum Please Vote

Dear Laurel, April was a busy month. We had a very informative presentation at THS called Teens Alcohol Drugs and Truths. I have information available if anyone is interested. Our Family Literacy Night was a wonderful success. Thanks to all of our special guests including Fancy Nancy , Virginia Brousseau the Tolland Children's Librarian, and our special READ dog guests. The children enjoyed reading to these specially trained animals! We have had our share of trauma in our world this year. If you or your child need some resources or guidance during difficult times, please let us know. We have a library of materials and references to help that we are willing to share. We have information on all stages of development and are always willing to listen! Thank you all very much for your continued cooperation and patience with the door and buzzer system. We continue to ask you to use the FRC side door from 7:00-8:00 am and from 4:30-5:45 pm. When you buzz please state your name and who you are coming to drop off or pick up. From 8:00-8:50 am and 3:00-4:30 pm please use the door by the cafeteria. The buzzer is heard in the office. We ask you NOT to hold the door open for others. We DO NOT want to discourage kindness and manners, but we want to monitor who is entering the building. So if someone is coming, please have them announce their name before entering the building. We thank you for your cooperation. How wonderful it is to hear the birds chirping, feel the sun shining and watch the buds pop on the trees and in the gardens. It is almost as exciting as having watched our FRC children blossom and grow through the year. We have much excitement to share as we enter the last leg of our school year. Please have your child dress appropriately for outdoor play. Our goal is to get all the children in our programs outside everyday the weather cooperates. Please do not send them into school with strapless sandals, flip-flops or high heels! It is best to send them in with shoes that cover their toes and have sturdy soles. Have them wear shoes that can help them run fast! Remember it is windy on the playground so a jacket is

often wanted. We offer a free preschool developmental screening to all of our families. Thank you to those that have returned their Ages and Stages Surveys. If you haven't returned yours please do at your earliest convenience. If you did not receive one, please let us know! AN EXCITING NEW PROGRAM! Please share the news that we have begun an ESL program on Monday nights from 6:00-9:00 pm. at Birch Grove. It is a mini session run by Vernon Regional Adult Education for those adults interested in strengthening their English vocabulary, writing skills and reading skills. Our classmates are having fun getting to know each other and are sampling and sharing favorite recipes! You are welcome to join us for one class or all of the remaining: May 6,13 and 20. We are pleased to announce we have a Military Fee assistance Program that Military Families can apply for called Child Care of America Military Fee Assistance Program.

Preschool Happenings! We will begin the month with a special trip for our preschoolers to The Lutz Children's Museum on May 1. Our Grow with Me , Three Year Old and Four Year Old Friends will investigate animal appetites and enjoy creative play. Letter Days continue with our threes and fours. Let them share what they are learning and let them teach you!

We are Learning so much everyday!

SCHOOL AGED CARE ~ WE ARE GROWING! In Kindergarten they will be talking about farms and farming. They will learn about seeds and gardening and will grow their own garden! Gardening is a great skill to share with your children. It encourages patience, care, commitment and reaps pleasure! After School K-1 Friends will be exploring and looking for fun facts about Tolland looking back in time to discover what had happened in Tolland's past. If you have any fun facts to share please send us an email to let us know! It is fun for the kids to get their families involved! They will map and keep track of the facts they learn about the town they live and play in. Our older BGP kiddos will also be focusing on planting AND recycling. They have already begun planting in a recycled shelf!! If anyone has any plywood or bluebird house building supplies they would be gladly accepted and recycled for good use! Our TIS FRC Gang are enjoying many outdoor activities including 3 vs. 3 soccer and paper airplane design and flight contests. Crafts will include origami and creative cards! Each Wednesday they have a special snack including Quesadillas for Cinco de Mayo!

Tolland students can show their patriotism by taking part in the town‟s 2013 Memorial Day Essay Contest. This year‟s topic is “The theme of this year‟s Tolland Memorial Day parade is „The Fallen Are Never For-gotten.‟ Describe the ways you and your family honor members of the military who have given their lives to protect you.” Winners will be honored at a ceremony following Tolland‟s 22nd annual Memorial Day Parade, which begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. Prizes will be awarded in four categories: grades 3-4, grades 5-6, grades 7-8 and grades 9-12. The contest is open to Tolland students. Entries must be written in the form of an essay. They must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font, and no longer than one page. They must include the student‟s name, address, phone number and grade. Entries must be received by May 6.
