WHAT’S HAPPENING AT T.I.S.: GRADE 3 Happy Autumn! The weather is getting cooler and children need to wear

appropriate clothing to recess. We concluded our science unit on Forces and

Motion. The children are now learning about Tolland and Connecticut in the

1700s. The classes are going to the Historical Society Building in Hartford, CT to

learn about the Legend of the Charter Oak. We will also visit the Benton

Homestead in Tolland to experience what life was like for people living in Tolland in

the early 1700s. Writer Workshop is in full swing with the children writing

personal narratives.

GRADE 4 As the year progresses students are beginning to feel more confident as writers

and learners of math. There are lots of new processes, procedures and concepts

for teachers as well as students to absorb, but things are coming together nicely.

In science students have been digging in the dirt—er,soil—as they learn about the

layers, types and components of soil. In social studies we are learning about who’s

in charge and what roles they play in state government. We are learning how a bill

becomes a law—not an easy process! In LA we are well into our Mythology Unit,

which the kids just love! Don’t be surprised when your 4th grader comes home

talking about the Cyclops, Cerberus, Medusa or other mythical characters!

GRADE 5 Fifth grade students are celebrating Writer's Workshop narrative writing process.

Students will be sharing their drafts with the new writing skills they have learned

in the unit so far. Students are also writing personal narratives through the eyes

of a Native American child. Students are using what they learned in social studies

about Native American culture and natural resources along with writing skills to

create a diary entry. Additionally, our fifth graders are excited to experience the

Earth, Moon and Sun unit come to life as we take a field trip to the planetarium.

Recorder Order Time

Dear Parents,

The third grade curriculum uses recorders to teach music

literacy. Each student needs to have his or her own

recorder. For health and educational purposes, we have

found that it is better for each student to own their own

recorder and bring it to school for their music classes. The

recorder is an investment in your child’s music education.

All the third and fourth grade music classes use recorders.

I would like to give you the opportunity to purchase a recorder through

the school. This is of no advantage to our school, or me, but it is

advantageous for you. First, if I order the recorders in bulk we can pay at

least $5.50 less for each recorder. Also, I can insure that your child will be

getting a quality recorder with good tone quality, (unlike those you can get at

Target or some other discount store). If we order now we can get the

discount and ensure that the recorders will be ordered and shipped in time for

our use. Therefore, I am offering you the opportunity to order a recorder

through Tolland Intermediate School. Just fill in the form below and send in a

check for $5.50 made out to the Tolland Intermediate school student activity

fund. Please return the check and the form before Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Recorders will be delivered and we will begin using them in class at the

end of March.

Thank you and I hope I have made getting a recorder for your

child just a little easier,

Ms. Judith Baker

The

Technology

Club

The TIS Technology Club is for 4th and 5th grade students who are

interested in furthering their technological skills while being given the opportunity to work in a

real world/school environment. Students must possess the ability to work independently and in

small groups on projects, manage the project timeline and possess the desire to problem solve

and use resources to complete tasks. Tech Club members may spend time learning the basics of

coding, developing presentations, creating tutorials, learning video and audio recording and

editing, and functioning as a first level IT department, as well other projects that become

necessary as a means to provide a service to the school.

Students are not expected to have full knowledge of the needed technology/software, but they

must present a desire to learn and a willingness to receive help from others.

The Tech Club will meet on Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:50. Days will be

determined once all applications are received and depend on enrollment.

Interested students need to:

1. Complete the application

2. Get a signature of recommendation from their teacher

3. Submit a digital presentation as to why they should be allowed to be a member of the

Tech Club. (This can be as creative as they need...PowerPoint, Prezi, etc., but should be

concise, but informative of their interests and skills.) Presentations can be submitted on a

flashdrive (please make sure the student’s name is visible on the drive) or emailed to

[email protected] (Subject line to read: Technology Club - Student’s Name).

Deadline: October 29th

Cost of the club is $20. Please do not submit payment at this time. If your child’s application is

approved, then more information will be sent regarding when and how to remit payment.

Any questions, please feel free to email.

The “All for Books” program has begun!

Don’t forget to send in your donation along with the colored “brick” that was

sent home with the book fair flyer! All signed “bricks” will be displayed at school during the fair.

With your help, all of the money collected will go toward purchasing more

books for Tolland Intermediate School.

Not only does your donation help our cause, but Scholastic Book Fairs will match monetary donations raised with a donation of up to one million books to two non-profit organizations dedicated to helping children, families, and teachers acquire books and educational resources - Kids In Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc.

This is a voluntary program. There is no obligation to particpate.
