Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academicdepartments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre

Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the Universityas one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describ-ing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportu-nities for ambitious students.”

Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central fea-ture of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities forprofessional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratioof 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants intheir education, often working individually with faculty members onresearch. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrantcampus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complementthe primary academic mission.

About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduateschool, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools,and in other advanced degree programs.New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place wherebooks, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are comple-mented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym hasresulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet thesocial, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’sattractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center forAthletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learningand Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a resi-dence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997).The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from theRussell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk familyowns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. Thetwo-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performancearena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basket-ball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room andwellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the JackHorenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologi-cally-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teachinglabs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for LiberalArts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social sci-ence, humanities, business and economics.Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has hosted a num-ber of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense SecretaryWilliam Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film

directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee.Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction includeEdward B. RICHARD F. WILSON, PRESIDENTRichard F. Wilson became the 18th presidentat Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004.

Since 1978 Wilson has served in a numberof roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, most recently (since 1996) as VicePresident of the U. of Illinois Foundation. Hewas responsible for all private fundraising onthe Urbana campus, including leading campusefforts to achieve its $1 billion goal as part ofthe university’s comprehensive campaign.

From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was AssociateChancellor, leading efforts to incorporate computing technologies intoinstruction and providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994,

he became Associate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Directorof the University of Illinois Foundation.

Since 1981 Wilson held an adjunct teaching position in the Collegeof Education, most recently as Adjunct Professor of Higher Education.

Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Alderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.), where he earned honors in both academicsand athletics.

Wilson pursued advanced degrees at the University of Michigan,earning both the master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education.

Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children — Adam, who lives inSan Francisco, and Rachel, who lives in Springfield, Ill.

HEAD COACHKIM NELSON-BROWN

In 2009, Kim Nelson-Brown willbegin her 14th season as headvolleyball coach at IWU. Her 13-year overall record is 281-195(.590 winning percentage) withone outright College Conferenceof Illinois and Wisconsin champi-onship (1997) and two NCAADivision III tournament appear-ances (1997, 1998). The 2003team won the CCIW regular sea-son title with a 6-1 mark.

Since coming to Illinois Wesleyan in 1996, Nelson-Brownhas coached six All-Americans (Tiffany Hamblin, 2002;Beth Crowley, 2003; Molly May, 2004; Jenna Passananti,2006; and Michele Malinowski and Emily Hagen, bothhonorable mention in 2008), 12 all-region players, 42 all-CCIW selections, and three CCIW "Players of the Year"(Kellie Schmidt, 1999; Crowley, 2003; and May, 2004)

In 13 seasons, Nelson-Brown's teams have a conferencerecord of 56-35 (.615 winning percentage).

In research conducted by the NCAA (July 2009), Nelson-Brown is the 12th youngest coach in Division III with morethan 200 career wins and the 16th youngest with more than200 victories across all divisions.

Nelson-Brown was a four-year letterwinner at Division IIllinois State University, from 1990-93, and was theMissouri Valley Conference "Most Valuable Player" in both

1992 and 1993. She was elected to the Illinois StateUniversity Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

A 1994 ISU graduate, Nelson-Brown was the Redbirds'MVP in 1992 and three-time "Most Inspirational Player."Kim and her husband, Brian, are the parents of a daughter(Tyler, born Aug. 21, 1997) and a son (McCade, born Aug.15, 2000).

Nelson-Brown is also an associate athletic director and sen-ior women’s administrator for athletics at Illinois Wesleyan.

Illinois Wesleyan Volleyball All-Time Series Records

ASSISTANT COACH ALEX RATCLIFFAlex Ratcliff is in her first season (2009) as anIllinois Wesleyan volleyball assistant. Ratcliffattended Champaign (Ill.) Central HighSchool where she earned special mention all-state and first-team all-area and all-conferencehonors as a junior and senior. In 2003, herclub team placed fifth at the AAU nationalchampionships and in 2004, her team becamethe first 18's team from Illini Elite to advanceto nationals, placing 19th. Ratcliff was rankedamong the top 250 collegiate 2004 prospectsby Prepvolleyball.com and attended Michigan

State before transferring to Miami (Ohio), where she lettered three

times, was named to the Mid American Conference all-freshman teamin 2005 and the MAC all-tournament team in 2007 playing for thetourney champions. As a freshman she had her career-high 21 kills in afour-game match with Northern Colorado in the Miami Classic. As asenior she had 14 double-figure kill matches, including two 20-plus killperformances, including tying a career-high with 21 kills in a three-game contest vs. Kent State.
