PUMP SELECTIONWhen moving liquid there are many pump options to choseBy Fred Paul, sales engineering manager, Wacker Neuson Pump applications can be far reaching … from the general construction dewatering job, to fl ood control to unique applications in the fi shing and recreational industry. These varying applications suggest that contractors and landscapers need to have basic pump knowledge regarding the type of pump needed for their particular job. With such a wide range or pumps available selecting the correct pump for the application is important. The most common pumps available are trash, dewatering, diaphragm and submersible pumps. Each of these pump styles are designed for different applications. Centrifugal trash and dewatering pumps are very versatile and are among the simplest and most effi cient.
Dewatering pumps are relatively inexpensive, but do not contain high quality components necessary for durability under general construction conditions. The water being pumped must be relatively clean, containing suspended solids up to1/4 inch in diameter and less than 10 percent by weight. Benefi ts of detwatering pumps include high volume fl ow capabilities and a lightweight, compact design. These pumps are best suited to pump unwanted water from, fl ooded basements, utility vaults, swimming pools, lakes and barge holds. Dewatering pumps are commonly used on water trucks or trailers for jobsite dust suppression and small irrigation projects.
Trash pumps contain many high quality components and are well worth the additional cost compared to dewatering pumps. This type of pump is often the preferred choice in the construction industry. These pumps can handle clean, muddy, mucky, or sandy water with solids up to 2 inches in diameter (depending on pump size) and between 10 to 25 percent by weight. Applications include pumping unwanted water from excavations, fl ooded basements, manholes, utility vaults, mining work, retention ponds, lakes and barge holds. Trash pumps are very popular in the construction industry because of their reliability, versatility, and durability under a variety of site conditions.
Capabilities of Trash and Dewatering Pumps1. 25-ft suction lift at sea level2. High discharge heads3. Lightweight and portable4. Small investment for large capacity5. Few parts, easy to maintain
Limitations1. High water content to move solids2. Not for mud, thick slurries, or corrosive material3. Dewatering pumps: 10 percent solids or less4. Trash pumps: 10 to 25 percent solids
Application1. Clearwater 2. Water with algae3. Water with suspended clay4. Silt water5. Abrasive water6. Fast seepage ditch water
Submersible pumps offer contractors versatility on the jobsite. These pumps are primarily for water containing solids up to ¼ in. in diameter and less that 10 percent by weight. They are relatively inexpensive, can run unattended and are ideal where quiet operation is mandatory. Pumping unwanted water from well casings, tunnels, shafts, fl ooded excavations, manholes, and vaultsare some applications appropriate for submersible pumps. Submersible pumps are powered by a variety of single or three-phase electric motors, some equipped with automatic fl oat options, and are lowered directly into the liquid to be pumped:
Pro Tip: Position the pump as close to the source as possible, using as short of a suction hose as possible. The shorter the distance a pump has to move liquid, the higher the volume the pump will deliver.
51-855-44-TITAN 1-855-44-TITAN
Capabilities of Submersible Pumps1. No suction hose required2. High discharge heads3. Small investment for large capacity4. Few parts, low repair and service costs5. Instant priming6. Runs dry for short time7. Does not need constant attention
Limitations2. Electric power source required3. 10 percent solids or less
Applications1. Water with algae2. Water with suspended clay3. Abrasive water4. Slow seepage ditch water
Diaphragm pumps are effective in muddy applications and are often used where the content of solids is high and/or a condition of seepage exists. Because of this muddy application, diaphragm pumps are commonly referred to as mud hogs, mud suckers or simply mud pumps. While diaphragm pumps do not pump high volumes or distances for their weight, they are very useful because of their versatility. Diaphragm pumps have the capability of pumping water with greater than 25 percents solids by weight. Diaphragm pumps do not require a steady fl ow of water and can handle large amounts of solids.
Capabilities of Diaphragm Pumps1. 25-ft suction lift at sea level2. Full capacity on each stroke3. Handles low seepage4. Keeps pumping in shallow water5. Pumps mud and large amounts of fl owable solids6. Easy service valves and diaphragm
Limitations1. Low discharge head and pressure2. Small capacity for investment vs. centrifugal models3. 25 percent solids and above
Applications1. Water with algae2. Water with suspended clay3. Mud water4. Silt water5. Abrasive water6. Water with high solid content7. Slow seepage ditch water8. Septic tank
Submersible pumps are great for pumping unwanted water from well casings, tunnels, shafts, fl ooded basements, manholes, vaults, swimming pools and farm fi eld drainage.

When Gregg Koors, owner of K & W Fueling Systems Inc got the confi rmation that his company would be working on the new Pilot Truck Stop in Sioux City, Iowa he knew what to do for equipment for the job. “I got on the internet and checked to see who the local Case Construction dealer was out there, got the number and made the call,” explained Gregg.
Dean Shaw, store manager for Titan Machinery in Sioux City took the call. “Gregg’s crew was from Indiana and was looking for a fl eet of equipment to for site work and install on a new service station going up in Sioux City. We were able to fulfi ll his equipment needs and get them started on their project right on schedule. Right now they’ve got over half a dozen pieces working at the site,” said Dean.
K & W Fueling Systems is based out of Indiana but does work throughout the Midwest. Often it doesn’t make sense to truck equipment from their home base to a jobsite. “We have a crew running back in Indiana and it just made more sense to leave our own equipment back there and rent what we needed locally for this job,” Gregg explained. “And Titan Rentals has been outstanding with the equipment and support
they’ve provided. We’re really happy with the way the job has been going.”
“When I started out, everything I used was rental. Over the years we’ve built up our own fl eet of equipment but it still often makes more sense to rent what we need versus to move our own equipment or purchase another piece when we are short. Owning equipment is a big investment and we’ve found that the most effi cient way to tackle some jobs is with rental equipment,” said Gregg.
K & W Fueling Systems works extensively with Pilot on new service station installs. “Pilot likes to work with the same companies because they know what kind of service they get. They are extremely demanding but the work is worth it. Our crews get stuff done with no problems – and that’s exactly what the company expects,” said Gregg. “And that’s how we feel about the equipment we rent. We don’t have time for equipment that doesn’t perform or rental companies that can’t deliver as promised.”
Gregg’s team prefers to run Case equipment. “I’ve been around and running Case equipment myself for

Gregg’s team prefers to run Case equipment. “I’ve been around and running Case equipment myself for
nearly 40 years. Our crews have been running mostly Case equipment over the years. We’re extremely comfortable with the performance and operation of the equipment. Plus the Case dealers that we’ve partnered with on the different jobsites we’ve worked have been so good to work with.”
“One thing I like about Titan Rentals is the wide area they cover. We’ve got another install to do over 10 hours away from Sioux City and there is a Titan Rentals location right there. That’s going to make it easy for us to pick-up and roll in to the next jobsite without having to reestablish a relationship with another dealer or rental yard. It’s just more effi cient to deal with one company when you can – and when you know from past experience that they deliver,” continued Gregg.
“We’re not a big company. We’ve got a good niche with the work we do. Titan Rentals has treated us extremely well. Having a dependable company that’s local to an area where we are working to provide equipment and service and parts is critical to our company being able to deliver the performance that is expected of us. It’s been a treat working with Titan and we look forward to working with them on other projects in the area”

* Engine-Generator Control Module (EGCM) allows stand-by size load for 60 minutes before Overcurrent Fault occurs. **** Main Breaker is short circuit protection. EGCM controller is primary Overcurrent protection.- Amp ratings for 3 x L-L Resistive loads (1.0 pf) are derived from 3 phs kW rating. (Calc. Amps = kW x 577 / L-L Voltage)- G240 single phase Amps shown = Low Wye connection (No Zig-Zag). 120 / 208V or 139 / 240V.- All 3 phs models are power rated at 240V and 480V. Maximum Amp output is at either 240V (low wye) or 480V (high wye).- Prime Power ratings are available up to an ambient temperature of 117 F (47 C).

Sizing a Generator to a load(s):1) Add all Running Amps or kW or kVA together for total Running load (adding kVA is easier).2) Add all Starting Amps or kW or kVA together for worst case Surge load (adding kVA is easier)NOTE: Try starting motors one at a time...largest motors 1st. Add previous running motor load to next starting load.3) Using Generator chart on page 1, select a generator that can meet or exceed both the Run and Start requirements.
Definitions:Volts - Unit of electrical Pressure (Similar to psi pressure in a hydraulic system).Amps - Unit of electron Flow in electrons/sec (Similar to gpm flow in a hydraulic system). Power - Units are Watts (kW) and Volt-Amps (kVA). Electrical Energy available to perform Work. (Similar to Hp)
kVA = Volt-Amps (VA) x 1000. Apparent power (a.k.a. Supplied power) from the generator.kW = Watts x 1000. True power (a.k.a. Active or Usable power) from the generator. The type of load on the generator determines how much of the supplied power (kVA) is actually usable (kW).Resistive loads (heat, lights) use all of the power supplied. For example: kW = kVAInductive loads (motors, pumps) use some of the supplied power. Example a motor load: kW = 80% of kVAPower Factor (PF) = ratio of usable power (kW) to supplied power (kVA). Example a motor load = 0.8 PF
Hertz - Unit of Frequency. Number of sine waves/sec. Example: 60 sine waves/sec = 60 HertzNOTE: Generator Engine Speed is proportional to Frequency. Changing Engine rpm changes Hertz.NOTE: Always match Generator voltage and frequency to tool or applicance you are powering.
Formulas:Find 1 Phase (typically PF = 1.0) 3 phase (Use PF = 0.8 or actual)kVA V x A 1.732 x V x A

Air Compressor MaintenanceSpring is upon the central US and jobsites are starting to buzz with activity again. One of the more overlooked tools on the jobsite or in the shop is the air compressor. Most don’t require daily checks so it’s easy to forget that they require maintenance like all other equipment. Most contractors have more than 1 industrial-sized air compressor which are a signifi cant investment. Not to mention the tools that the compressors run – which can be damaged by a compressor that is not properly maintained. A few simple tips can ensure that you get the most of your compressor and air tools that they run:
Drain the water out of the tanksWater/moisture accumulates in the tank of compressors because of condensation due to temperature extremes compressing air creates. It’s important to keep the water drained from your compressor and lines. Moisture is corrosive to the internal system of the compressor and also any lines and tools that the air is blown thru. Some compressors are equipped with a dryer system which, when operating correctly, eliminates moisture. Most other air compressors have a valve for draining moisture. Remember to release the air pressure from the tank before draining the water from the compressor.
Test the safety shutdown system (if equipped)Your air compressor may have a safety shutoff system that will shut down the compressor if it is overheating or if the engine oil pressure is too low. Ensuring that this is working properly can save you from a catastrophic and expensive failure. Consult the operator’s manual for proper test procedure.
Check and change air fi ltersA dirty air fi lter causes your compressor to work harder to pull air in to the compressor or engine. This robs power and effi ciency and can lead to premature wear. Many compressors work in dusty and dirty conditions so it’s a good bet that the air fi lter(s) are dirty. Cleaning or replacing dirty air fi lters is an easy, inexpensive way of getting the maximum performance and life out of your air compressor.
Check and change the oilEngine driven air compressors require regular engine maintenance intervals, just like any other machines in your fl eet. Changing the engine oil and fi lter is one of the best ways of ensuring a long life for your air compressor. Engine oil should be changed at least once a year regardless of use. In addition, many compressors utilize oil to cool and lubricate the compressing elements of the unit. In these cases, checking the engine and compressor oil is critical to the long-term durability of your compressor.
Check for loose hardwareAir compressors can create a great deal of vibration during operation. Over time this can loosen up hardware and cause bolts and connectors to drop off and be lost. You should always keep an eye out for loose hardware, but that is especially true when you do an annual inspection. Carefully check for loose fi ttings and hardware.
Check hoses for cracks and leaks
Air hose often get dragged around the jobsite or shop and subjected to various hazards. As they age, the material in hoses can get brittle and crack. Your air compressor is only as good as the air hose that connects it to the tool that you are using. Damaged, cracked or leaking air lines are an easy to avoid nuisance.
Check the belts for tightness and cracksA loose drive belt can slip causing the air compressor to lose effi ciency. An over-tightened drive belt will prematurely wear the belt and can damage the bearings on the drive. A rule of thumb is the belt should defl ect no more than twice the thickness of the belt. A quick way to check is to lay a straight-edge from pulley to pulley and push down on the belt. A 1/2 “ thick belt should defl ect around 1/2 ”-1”. Any more and the belt is too loose. If it doesn’t defl ect at least a little, it’s running too tight.
A high-quality properly maintained compressor should last for many years and many jobs. Neglecting simple maintenance items will shorten the life of the air compressor and reduce your return on investment.
