Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s Bible Truth.

Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Pray over your group as a whole. Ask that God would lead you as you lead the group in becoming a safe place for kids to wrestle with the tensions of regular life. Pray for each kid, individually, to become the kind of friend who helps others trust Jesus.

My Friend Is . . .Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and working as a group

What You Need: No supplies needed

What You Do: Sit in a circle. Ask the kids to think of single words that describe a friend such as: nice, happy, fun, and so on. Begin a word-repetition game by saying, “My friend is,” and then add a word that describes a

friend. Ask the next person to repeat what you said but add another word to the end of the sentence. Continue around the circle, letting each child add a new word until someone forgets one of the

words. Then start over. Here are some words to suggest if kids run out of ideas:

happy fun smart short strongcute helpful silly kind wisenice tall rich old good

What You Say:“Friends come in all shapes and sizes: tall, short, big, and small. Friends make us happy and help us when we feel sad or lonely. [Transition] Today we’re going to hear about the very best thing a friend can do. Let’s go to Large Group and find out.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

What You Need: Search-and-find books

What You Do: Encourage your few to get into pairs. Provide each pair with a search-and-find book. Encourage them to follow the instructions and search and find the pictures. Be prepared to help if any of them get stuck or frustrated.

What You Say:“That was fun working together as a team to find the hidden pictures! Have you ever lost something and then found it hidden in a crazy spot? (Allow time for kids to respond.) Those are some funny stories! [Transition] Today in Large Group, we are going to learn about a special something that we can search for and keep always.”

Bible: Communicating God’s Truth in Engaging Ways (Large Group, 25 minutes) Engage kids’ hearts through a dynamic and interactive Bible Truth, worship, and prayer experience in a Large Group setting.

CG: 10 Second Count DownCG: AMPED Theme Slide

Host is on stage, welcoming the kids as they enter.

OpenerHOST: “It’s another great day here at [your environment’s name], and I’m AMPED to be with you again! We’re talking about what it means to have confidence and live fully alive. What is confidence?

CG: Confidence Slide

“Confidence is living like you believe what God says is true. Let’s say that together.”

HOST and KIDS: “Confidence is living like you believe what God says is true.”

HOST: “I know I feel really confident when I start the day off right. All of us have things that we’re used to doing first thing in the morning. If I skip something or do it out of order, I feel like my whole day is off. What are some things you always do to start your day?

Call on a few volunteers to share about their morning routines.

“Wow—I do those same things! I wonder if we do them the same way. Let’s find out! Let me get one of you and your Small Group Leader up here on stage.

Choose a boy and his Small Group Leader. (Make sure the kid and Leader are both male.)

(To audience) “I’ll tell all of you about my morning routine, and while I do that (to volunteers) you two will act out what I say. For example, if I say the first thing I do when I wake up is stretch, how would you act that out?

7

Page 8: Title Goes Here2e5c56655e875dafe37d-48a52a64848943a9d3cbdaeb9… · Web viewSUNDAY MORNINGSJuly 8, 2018, Week 2. Grade: 1-2. Classified - Internal use. 13

SUNDAY MORNINGS July 8, 2018, Week 2Grade: 1-2

Stretch along with the two volunteers.

“Perfect! But I think we need to make this more extreme. Instead of you both acting out the same thing, how about you work together?

“[Leader’s name], you’ll need one of these.

Hand him the poncho.

“You’ll sit here, behind this table.

Position the Leader behind the table so he’s sitting in the chair facing the crowd.

“[Kid’s name], you’ll stand behind him.

Have the kid stand behind the Leader.

“[Leader’s name], you have the easy job. All you have to do is react with your face to what I say. [Kid’s name], you’ll be his arms. Sound good?

(To audience) “Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my morning routine, reenacted by [Leader’s name] and [kid’s name].

Allow the volunteers to react to each step. Be ready to coach or help them if needed.

“After a long night of sleeping, the first thing I do is stretch really big! I reach up to the ceiling . . . and then down to the floor. And sometimes I yaaaawn.

“To get myself amped for the day, I put on one of my favorite songs and have a quick morning dance.

SFX: “Get Ready (Orchestral Mix)” by 2 Unlimited (starting at 0:27)

“Dancing in the morning is always fun! Check out those moves!

“Of course, I wake up with bed head, so I find my favorite comb and comb my hair. (Hand the comb to the kid volunteer.) There’s this one spot that always sticks up in the back. I make sure to comb that part really well. And I always brush the front a few extra times. Now we’re looking good. Two thumbs up!

“They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I never skip it! My favorite breakfast is cereal. (Set out the bowl, cereal, milk, and spoon on the table.) First, the cereal goes in the bowl. Then I add the milk. Let me do that part for you. (Pour the milk in yourself.)

(To volunteers) “That looks good. Why don’t you take a few bites?

“Fresh fruit is also a good breakfast, and I love a banana in the morning. (Hand the banana to the kid volunteer.) Of course, first I have to peel the banana. (Pause.) Then I take a giant bite!

SUNDAY MORNINGS July 8, 2018, Week 2Grade: 1-2

“The last thing I do is brush my teeth. It’s good to start the day with fresh breath. (Hand the toothpaste and toothbrush to the kid volunteer.)

“First, I have to put toothpaste on my toothbrush. And then I brush my teeth—being sure to go up and down and back and forth. We want those teeth to be good and clean. It’s important to spit after you brush your teeth, too. (Hold up the bucket so the Leader can spit.) And we have to rinse after we brush. Here’s a bottle so you can rinse. (Hand the water bottle to the kid volunteer. Be ready to hold up the bucket again for the Leader.)

“That’s a great start, [Leader’s name] and [kid’s name]. I think you’re ready to a ‘fully alive’ kind of day. (To audience) Let’s give them a hand!

Give towel and wet wipes to the volunteers so they can clean up. Dismiss them to their seats.

“Something else that helps me get ready for the day and fills me with confidence is singing praises to God. Let’s stand up and sing together!”

SETTING UP THE STORYHISTORYTELLER: “It’s great to sing with your friends, isn’t it? It’s great to do ANYTHING with your friends. They make everything in life so much better.

“You’ve got some awesome friends right here in your small group. You’ve also got friends who live in your neighborhood, friends at summer camp, friends on your sports team, and, of course, friends from school. You’re about to see them again in just a few short weeks!

“Here’s the thing, though. It’s important to make sure you have the right KINDS of friends—friends you can really listen to and who help you make wise choices. You’ve got to find those friends who you know will lead you in the right direction.”

BAD ADVICE FROM A FRIENDHISTORYTELLER: “I remember when I was a kid. It was a very special time called . . . the 1980s.

Note: You can adjust these references for any decade.

“There were some great things about the 80’s—like the clothes and definitely the music. Here’s what I looked like back then.

Choose two older kids (the same gender as you and your friend) and bring them up on stage.

“Great! First, let’s give you a totally 80’s look.

Give neon sunglasses to both volunteers.

“[Kid 1’s name] you’ll be playing me. [Kid 2’s name] you’ll be playing my friend [friend’s name]. This is the kind of situation that might have happened to us back in the day. Here are your scripts so you know what to say.

Hand the highlighted scripts to both volunteers. Be ready to hold up the handheld mic so everyone can hear their lines.

“I think we’re ready! Presenting . . . [Historyteller’s name]’s Totally Awesome Life!”

SFX: 80’s-style instrumental music

Hand the videotape to the kid playing your friend.

KID 2 [as HISTORYTELLER’S FRIEND]: “Hey, [Historyteller’s name]. Look at the totally rad tape my parents rented from the video store!”

KID 1 [as HISTORYTELLER]: “Totally tubular, dude!”

SFX: Laugh track

HISTORYTELLER: “But wait. [Historyteller’s name] looked more closely at the tape. Her mom had told her she wasn’t allowed to watch this particular movie. This was NOT totally tubular, dude.”

SFX: Crowd “Oooooooh”

KID 2 [as HISTORYTELLER’S FRIEND]: “Aw, take a chill pill. Let’s watch it anyway. She’ll never find out.”

KID 1 [as HISTORYTELLER]: “Yikes to the max!”

SFX: 80’s-style instrumental music

HISTORYTELLER: “What a tricky situation for young [Historyteller’s name]. She’s feeling the pressure from her friend to do something she knows she’s not supposed to do. Maybe [friend’s name] isn’t the right voice for her to listen to after all.

(To the two kid actors) “You two can have a seat right here for a minute.”

The two kid actors sit in the chairs.

PHILIP AND NATHANAELHISTORYTELLER: “Speaking of listening to right voices, there’s a story about Jesus in John chapter 1. (Hold up Bible.) Jesus was traveling from town to town looking for disciples—His close friends who would follow Him and listen to His teaching.

“Jesus decided to travel to Galilee. He found a man named Philip, and He said, ‘Follow me.’ He chose Philip to be one of His disciples. Can you guess what Philip did next? He hightailed it right to his friend Nathanael and told him everything! He found Nathanael resting in the shade of a fig tree. ‘Nathanael,’ he said . . .

Open the Bible to John 1:45 and read.

“We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph (NIrV).

“Nathanael wasn’t really impressed. He said: Nazareth! Can anything good come from there? (John 1:46a NIrV). But Philip knew Jesus was the real deal. He knew Jesus was the Savior that God had promised. He told his friend Nathanael: Come and see (John 1:46b, NIrV) In other words, ‘Come see for yourself.’

“Jesus saw them approaching, and He said this about Nathanael.

Open the Bible to John 1:47 and read.

“He is a true Israelite. Nothing about him is false” (NIrV).

“Nathanael was like: How do you know me? . . . Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree. I saw you there before Philip called you” (NIrV).

“Nathanael was stunned! Wouldn’t you be, too? Jesus already saw him—He picked him out, even before his friend came to get him. Nathanael realized that Jesus really was the Son of God.

“If you think about it, Philip was a really good friend to Nathanael. He knew he needed to get Nathanael’s attention. He was like, ‘Hey, buddy! Pay attention! Jesus is over there, and we need to follow Him!’”

GOOD ADVICE FROM A FRIENDHISTORYTELLER: (To the two kid actors) “You two can stand back up, because we’re heading back to my childhood. [Historyteller’s friend’s name] gave some not-so-good advice before, but that’s not the way things would have REALLY gone down. Remember, she was actually a GREAT friend. Let me show you what would have actually happened.

SFX: 80’s-style instrumental music

Make sure the kid playing the friend still has the videotape.

WRAPPING UP THE STORYHISTORTYELLER: “In real life, [friend’s name] really was a good friend to me. She helped me make good decisions. She encouraged me to follow Jesus with her words and her actions. Her friendship was really important to me.

“That’s the kind of friend Philip was, too. When Philip met Jesus, he couldn’t wait to run and tell his friend Nathanael about it. Those are the kinds of friends you want in your life—friends who are so excited about what God is doing that they encourage you to follow Him too.

[Bottom Line] “Find friends who help you trust Jesus. “If you don’t know where to start, look around your group! One friend who can help you make wise choices is your Small Group Leader. Your Leader is good friend to turn to—someone who will help you trust Jesus. Your friends in your small group can also encourage you to follow God and live fully alive.

What You Need: “Search and Find” Activity Pages

What You Do: Pass out a piece of an Activity Page to each kid. Make sure each picture you pass to a kid also

has a match you have given to another kid. (If you have an odd number of kids, you can play as well.)

Instruct the kids to hold the pictures with the blank side facing out, so others can’t see what they have.

Explain that you will be counting to five. By the time you reach five, they must find a partner to stand across from.

After each kid is standing across from a partner, count to three, and allow kids to flip over their papers.

If they are standing across from a partner with the same picture they have, they can step aside out of the game.

If their pictures do not match, they must flip their pictures back over and continue playing until they find their match.

After all kids have found their matches, encourage them to work together in their pairs to create a story of what the two friends on the paper are doing.

Allow them to share the stories they have created with the group.

What You Say:“I absolutely loved the stories you created about good friends. It’s always nice to have a friend you can count on. What are some examples of how you can be a friend this week? (Allow time for kids to share.) Those are all very good ideas! There are so many good things to be on the lookout for. What You Do: Give each child one side of the “Friend Puzzle” Activity Page and ask kids to find the person

with the other half of the picture. (If you have an odd number of kids, take a puzzle piece yourself and play the game with your few.)

Tell them that the pictures will fit perfectly together if it’s a match. When they find the friend with the other half of the puzzle, tell them to sit down together. When everyone is seated, ask one of the questions below and tell the kids to share their answer

first with their friend. Then choose a couple of kids to share their answer with the whole group. Collect the cards, mix them up, and repeat, asking other questions.

o What is something a good friend does?o What would a good friend say to you if you were sad?o What might a friend do to help you trust God?o How have you helped a friend?

[Make It Personal] In between one of the rounds, share with the kids how a friend has helped you trust God.

Place a complete puzzle in a sealable sandwich bag for each child to take home.

What You Say:“You found a friend by using a matching puzzle piece and that was really fun. God wants you to [Bottom Line] find friends who help you trust Jesus. You don’t need a puzzle piece to do that. You just need to look for kids who love God and want to obey Him. Often, we can find those kinds of friends at church right here in our small group. Let’s help each other learn to follow Jesus and love Him more and more. The best kinds of friends are the ones who follow Jesus together.”
