What is Carbon Dioxide? Did you know that by creating CO2 you can make a coke volcanic explosion or make your lemonade into a carbonated beverage or could blow up a balloon? Well, you can! Carbon Dioxide is a colorless and odorless gas. It is found everywhere! Plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and it even comes out of people when they exhale. In this webquest, you and your group members will be experimenting with carbon dioxide first hand. You will see just what it can do with things that you have around your house. This is the same carbon dioxide that heats the earth! After the experiments, you and your group need to come up with a little 2 minute presentation about what you learned about CO2 with these experiments and what we have discussed in class.

The Task

In this webquest you will be performing three experiments to expand your knowledge of the world of CO2. You will experience first hand the reactions and processes of CO2 and other household chemicals. This week in class we have discussed the various things that CO2 does in our environment and everyday lives. These experiments are to help us wrap up our thoughts on CO2 and what it does in the world around us. You and your group will report your findings and what that expanded on your thoughts about this week’s lesson. Are you ready? Let’s go!

As a group write down a hypothesis based on what we have discussed in class on the following reactions:

• Combination of Diet Coke and Mentos in a 2 liter bottle

• Combination of Lemon Juice, Water, and Baking Soda in a cup

• Combination of Lemon Juice, Water, Baking Soda with a Balloon

From your group discussion put together a two minute presentation about:

• What your original hypothesis were for each experiment

• Discuss the reactions you found at each of the stations?

• What are the similarities in the experiments?

• Where else in your daily life can you find items that use CO2?

Conclusion

After completing this web quest and experiments you have seen how CO2 reacts with different things. How carbonation can be achieved by combining different reactants. You created a chemical reaction when combining an acid and a base. That CO2 can quickly expand and fill the volume of a container. Do you think the reactions would have been different if using a different type of liquid, mint, or fruit?
