Today’s United Way

• United Way has been a part of the Mid-South community for over 90 years

• Outstanding reputation and commitment to the region

• Our mission has not changed

Improving the quality of life for

Mid-Southerners by mobilizing

and aligning community resources

to address priority issues

• But over the past year, some exciting changes have been taking place at the United Way of the Mid-South…..



• New leadership at the top – Dr. Kenneth S. Robinson- Dynamic leader with a proven record

• The organization has been streamlined

• An increased focus on customer service

• There is a new vision, renewed energy, new direction



• Why the changes? We asked and you answered!

• During meetings with donors, agencies and corporate partners you identified what you needed from us:

o Better communications about our impact in the community

o Improved customer service

o More recognition of donors

o Continued leadership in the community

• Our goal – to meet your expectations



• Here’s how we plan to meet our mission and your expectations:

o Viability- Our organization will remain viable with the right people, in the right

places, doing the right thing

o Visibility- We will become more visible in the community with our donors, our

agencies, and our recipients

o Value- We will continue to add more value as an organization in the Mid-

South region by addressing key community needs



• United Way is in a unique position unlike

any other organization

• We stand at the intersection of

government, business, nonprofit agencies,

community and faith based organizations

• Uniting everyone to work together on the

important issues in the Mid-South

Faith



• Although a part of many programs and efforts, the UWMS has 3 primary focus areas:

o Education

o Income

o Health

• With priorities in each area



• Education

o Kindergarten Readiness- Increasing parental involvement in day care and early education

o Third Grade Reading Proficiency- The grade that is essential for reading; child learns to move from

“learning to read” to “reading to learn”

o College / Career- Prepping high school students for next step



• Income

o Financial Stability for Families and Individuals

o Free tax preparation - 2015 tax year, over 8,000 federal returns prepared- Over $12 million in refunds- Approximately $1.4 million saved in tax preparation

fees

o This will be a primary focus for UWMS moving forward



• Health

o Healthy Eating and Active Living

o Domestic Violence Prevention

o Community-wide solutions to priority health issues such as infant mortality
