ISSUE #03/2019 (AUGUST) KDN NO. PP 5666/04/2013 (032548) A GAINST challenging local and global business environments, the Total Industry Volume (TIV) showed a very encouraging growth of 2.3% (6,735 units) to reach 296,334 units compared to the same period last year. This was disclosed by YBhg. Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) at a press conference held on 18th July 2019. The increase in TIV was contributed by the Passenger Vehicle segment which saw it growing by 3.8% (9,952 units) while the Commercial Vehicle saw a drop of 11.2% (3,217 units). In May, 60,780 units were registered and was the highest in the first half of this year. Attractive pre-Hari Raya promotions by Members of the MAA helped to boost new vehicles sales in May. Notable contribution was Proton where its newly launched X70 SUV and many updated models gained wide acceptance throughout the country. The positive first half TIV performance has prompted the MAA to keep its original 2019 TIV forecast at 600,000 units which is a marginal 0.21% (1,286 units) over the previous year. Indications by many Members of the MAA to introduce new models and the continuation of aggressive marketing promotions further add to the momentum. Meanwhile, Total Production Volume (TPV) in the first half of 2019 increased by 1.5% (4,081 units) to reach 285,028 units compared to the same period last year. The increase in the TPV was in tandem with the surge in demand for new vehicles. As expected, the production of passenger cars (PC) increased by 2.1% (5,441 units) in the first half of this year but commercial vehicles (CV) except for trucks, dropped by 6.9% to 18,263 units from 19,623 units. In Total Production for the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, there was a drop of 2% to reach 2,082,860 units. The marginal drop in production reflected the general economy of each ASEAN member nation. AGAINST challenging local and global business environments, the Total Industry Volume (TIV) showed a very encouraging growth of 2.3% (6,735

units) to reach 296,334 units compared to the same period last year. This was disclosed by YBhg. Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) at a press conference held on 18th July 2019.

In May, 60,780 units were registered and was the highest in the first half of this year. Attractive pre-Hari Raya promotions by Members of the MAA helped to boost new vehicles sales in May. VOLVO Trucks commemorates its 50th anniversary of achievements and milestones in Malaysia this year.

THE country’s largest automotive component supplier body, Perodua Vendors Club (KVP) renamed itself on 12th April 2019 to the Perodua Suppliers Association (P2SA).

Perodua purchased RM5 billion worth of automotive components from local suppliers

in 2018 alone and also indicated that it would purchase more than RM6 billion worth of components by 2020 via its extensive localisation activities.

DAIHATSU (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (DMSB) announced on 20th June 2019 the launch of the Daihatsu Business Fleet Programme, to provide innovative solutions and end-to-end aftersales service tailored to small and medium businesses as well as customers with larger fleets.

“The programme puts a renewed focus on automotive service to better meet the requirements of today’s growing fleets. With the explosive growth of transportation network companies and last mile delivery services, our aim is to drive value through innovation by being the preferred partner of fleet companies to provide them with the service, vehicles and fleet management they need”, said En. Arman Mahadi, Managing Director of Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.

ONE month after setting a sales high in May, PROTON continued its upward surge in 2019 by recording its highest market share figure since July 2015. Sales of 7,615 units for June is the second highest figure posted by the Company this year, garnering an 18.1% share of the Malaysia automotive market in a month when Total Industry Volume (TIV) is estimated to have shrunk by 30.8% to 42,090 units.

“By achieving a market share of 18.1% in June, PROTON continues to show positive sales growth this year despite the tough market conditions following the Hari Raya holidays. Our year to date market share currently stands at 14.7% and is a big improvement of our 2018 figure of 10.8%. For the second half of the year, we will concentrate on continuing to build our sales and exciting the market further by introducing new and updated models as was promised at the beginning of the year,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON.

The growth in sales for PROTON has been powered on two fronts. The first is the improvement of its products but the second equally important factor has been the increase in the number of 3S/4S outlets in the Company’s network. As at the end of June, PROTON has 91 such outlets, by far the most of any automotive brand in Malaysia.

“Our strategy to grow our presence by increasing the number of 3S/4S outlets in our network is to ensure we deliver a premium brand experience to as many of our customers as possible. Our network development team is working hard to also raise our service levels and hopefully these improvements will have a positive impact on our SSI and CSI scores,” added Dr Li Chunrong. — MAA

This is one of the most momentous milestones for us and we are very satisfied with everything that we have been able to accomplish over the past five decades. We also feel truly honoured to have the continuous support of the industry and our customers as they have made it possible for us to grow our business in this market,” said Mr. Mitch Peden, Managing Director, Volvo Malaysia on 10th April 2019.

“Although today we are well positioned as the market leader in the heavy-duty European brand segment in Malaysia, there’s still a lot to achieve. The next 50 years will pose new challenges and we are thrilled and ready to embrace it as we remain focused on driving efficiency, innovation and excellence for all our stakeholder,” he added.— MAA
