1. The Hand Pyrotechnic Projector M9 is no longer supported. Disregard allmaterials in this technical manual pertaining to the M9 Hand PyrotechnicProjector.

(3) Open barrel of pistol. (4) Insert signal into barrel,with primer end toward firing pin. (5) Close barrel. (6) Fire at an angle ofapproximately 45 degrees. CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Section I. GENERAL

1. Scopea. This manual contains instructions, signal projector M1A1 (fig. 1), hand pyro-

information, and guidance of personnel technic projector M9 (fig. 2), and pyro-responsible for operation, organizational, technic pistol AN-M8 with pyrotechnicfield, and depot maintenance of the ground pistol mount M1 (figs. 3 and 4).

b. This manual contains a descriptionof and procedures for disassembly, in-spection, repair, and assembly of the aboveitems. Appendix I contains a list of currentreferences, including supply manuals,forms, technical manuals, and other avail-able publications applicable to the ma-teriel. Appendix II contains the mainte-nance allocation chart which indicates theechelon to perform maintenance. AppendixIII contains a list of basic issue items.

c. TM 9-1095-201-25P contains a listof repair parts and special tools which arerequired by personnel performing organ-izational, field, and depot maintenance onthe weapons.

2. Maintenance Allocationa. Operator Maintenance. The pre-

scribed maintenance to be performed bythe operator will apply as reflected in theoperator-maintenance (first echelon) col-umn of the maintenance allocation chart(app. II). In all cases where the nature ofthe repair, modification, or adjustment isbeyond the scope or facilities of the oper-ator, the items will be moved to the echelonindicated in the allocation chart for thetype of repairs required.

b. Organizational Maintenance. T h eprescribed maintenance to be performedby maintenance personnel of the using or-

ganization will apply as reflected in theorganizational-maintenance (second ech-elon) column of the maintenance allocationchart (app. II). In all cases where the na-ture of the repair, modification, or ad-justment is beyond the scope or facilitiesof the. using organization, the supportingOrdnance maintenance unit should be in-formed so that trained personnel with suit-able tools and equipment may providenecessary repairs.

c. Field and Depot Maintenance. T h eprescribed maintenance to be performedby field or depot maintenance personnel,will apply as reflected in the fourth or fifthechelon column of the maintenance alloca-tion chart (app. II). The repair parts arelisted and may be requisitioned from TM9-1095-201-25P.

3. Forms, Records, and Reportsa . G e n e r a l . Responsibility for the

proper execution of forms, records, andreports rests upon the officers of all unitsmaintaining this equipment. However, thevalue of accurate records must be fullyappreciated by all persons responsible fortheir compilation, maintenance, and use.Records, reports, and authorized formsare normally utilized to indicate the type,quantity, and condition of materiel to beinspected, to be repaired or to be used inrepair. Properly executed forms conveyauthorization and serve as records for re-pair or replacement of materiel in thehands of troops and for delivery of materielrequiring further repair to Ordnanceshops, arsenals, depots, etc. The forms,records, and reports determine the workrequired, the progress of the work withinthe shops, and the status of the materielafter repair.

b. Authorized Forms. The forms gen-erally applicable to units operating ormaintaining this materiel are listed in ap-pendix I. For instructions on use of theseforms, refer to FM 9-3 and 9-4. For alisting of all forms, refer to DA Pam 310-2.

c. Field Reports of Accidents.(1) Injury to personnel or damage to

materiel. The reports necessaryto comply with the requirements ofthe Army safe ty program are

prescribed in detail in AR 385-40.These reports are required when-ever accidents involving injury topersonnel or damage to materieloccur.Ammunition. Whenever an acci-dent or malfunction of ammunitionoccurs, firing of the remainder ofthe lot which malfunctions will beimmediately discontinued. In addi-

quired in (1) above, details of theaccident or malfunction will be re-ported as prescribed in AR 700-1300-8.

d. Report of Unsatisfactory Equipmentor Materials. Any deficiencies detectedin the equipment covered herein, whichoccur under the circumstances indicatedin AR 700-38, should be reported immedi-ately in accordance with the applicable in-

Section II. DESCRIPTION AND DATA

4. Descriptiona. Ground Signal Projector M1A1 (fig.

1). This unit is a light-weight, heavy-duty,mechanically supported ground projector.It is single-loading, manually fired, andis used to project the M27 high burst rang-ing ground signal.

b. Hand Pyrotechnic Projector M9 (fig.2). This equipment is a small, compact,lightweight, hand-supported and hand-op-erated projector used in signaling fromaircraft to aircraft, aircraft to ground,and ground unit to ground unit. The unitis single-loading.

c. Pyrotechnic Pistol AN-M8 with Pyro-technic Pistol Mount Ml (fig. 3).

The pyrotechnic pistol AN-M8 (fig.4) is a single shot, double action,breech-loading-type pistol, usedfor the same purposes as the pro-jector M9 (b above) and utilizes thesame signals. In addition, the pistolAN-M8 is used to project the para-chute aircraft flare M9A1.The pyrotechnic pistol mount Ml(fig. 5) is used as a holder for theAN-M8 pistol. The mount is pro-vided with four symmetrically placedhelical springs, which absorb therecoil shock and a cushioning gas-ket, to absorb the counterrecoil.The cover is provided for use whenthe pistol is removed from themount.A canvas holder (an article of AirForce supply) for both the pistoland appropriate number of aircraftsignals, is supplied and securely

attached to

the airplane at or nearthe pistol mount location. Thisholder is held in position by a suit-able bracket or shelf (provided bythe airplane manufacturer) whichis equipped with the necessary snapfasteners for attaching the holder.The pistol is carried in the holder,as shown in figure 6.

5. Differences Between ModelsThe projector M9 and the pistol AN-M8

serve the same purpose, i.e., signalingand/or production of illumination for mili-tary operations. The projector M1A1 isused for field artillery training purposesonly. It projects a high bursting signal thatproduces a smoke puff, at the top of itsascent, simulating an exploding shell.

6. Nameplate and Serial Numbera. Ground Signal Projector M1A1. This

unit has no nameplate or serial numberaffixed to it or stamped in it.

b. Hand Pyrotechnic Projector M9. Thename and model number of the projectorare stamped in the breech plate (fig. 7).The serial number is stamped on the latchassembly.

c. Pyrotechnic Pistol AN-M8 with Pyro-technic Pistol Mount M1. The name andmodel number of the pistol AN-M8 arestamped in the right-hand frame plate (fig.4). The serial number is stamped on theback of the frame. No name or serial num-ber is stamped on the mount Ml.

CHAPTER 2

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Section I. SERVICE UPON

8. Generala. When a new or reconditioned projec-

tor MlAl, hand projector M9, pistol AN-M8 with pistol mount Ml is received, it isthe responsibility of the officer in chargeto determine whether the materiel has beenproperly prepared for service by the sup-plying organization and to be sure it is incondition to perform its function.

b. All repair parts, tools, and equip-ment will be checked with the listing inappendix III, this manual, and TM 9-1095-201-25P.

c. A record will be made of all missingparts, tools, and equipment and of any mal-functions. Deficiencies will be correctedas quickly as possible.

d. The materiel should be cleaned andprepared for service in accordance withinstructions in paragraph 9.

Section Il.

10. GeneraIThis section describes, locates, and il-

lustrates the various controls providedfor the operation and maintenance of theprojector MlAl, projector M9, and pistolAN-M8 with mount Ml.

11. Ground Signal Projector M1A1

The lever assembly is the only controlon this projector. The improvised lanyardis attached to the ring on the lever assem-bly (fig. 1) which enables the projector tobe operated from a safe distance.

12. Hand Pyrotechnic Projector M9a. Knob. The knob (fig. 7), which is lo-

cated at the rear of the projector, containsthe firing pin. Depression of the knobcauses the firing pin to strike the signalpr imer .

b. Clip. The purpose of the clip (fig. 7)is to prevent accidental depression of theknob and firing of the projector. The clipis shown in the SAFE position in figure 2.To prevent loss, the clip is attached to thelatch pin with a chain.

(3) Pyrotechnic pistol AN-M8 withpyrotechnic pistol mount M1.

CONTROLS

c. Latch Assembly. The latch assembly(fig. 7) is fitted with a plunger that snapsinto the catch which is welded to the bar-rel. The purpose of this arrangement is tokeep the breech closed. Pu11ing up ont h e l a t c h a s s e m b l y w i l l c a u s e t h eplunger to disengage and the breechto open.

13. Pyrotechnic Pistol AN-M8 withPyrotechnic Pistol Mount M1

a. Lock. The lock (fig. 3) is used to lockor open the breech. Pulling up on the lockwill cause it to disengage from the frame,permitting the frame to swing downward,thereby opening the breech. When theframe is pulled upward, it closes thebreech and engages the lock.

b. Latch. The latch (fig. 3) is located infront of the lock and assists in locking thepistol into the mount.

c. Trigger. The trigger (fig. 3) is lo-cated within the trigger guard. The pistolis a double-action type, retracting the trig-ger cocks the hammer against spring ten-sion and releases the hammer at a speci-fied point to strike the firing pin.

Section Ill. OPERATION UNDER USUAL CONDITIONS

23. Operation in Cold Climatesa. In climates where the temperature is

consistently below freezing, it is neces-sary to prepare the materiel for cold-weather operation.

b. Exercise the various controls throughtheir entire range, at intervals as re-quired, to aid in keeping them from freez-ing in place and to reduce the effortrequired to operate them.

c. When materiel is not in use, pay par-ticular attention to protecting it with theproper covering making certain they aresecurely fastened so that snow and ice willbe kept from the operating parts. Provideas much protection as possible for all partsof the materiel and equipment.

In hot climates, the film of oil nec-essary for operation and preserva-tion will dissipate quickly. Inspectmateriel frequently, paying partic-u l a r a t t e n t i o n t o a l l h i d d e nsurfaces, such as the bore, springsand spring seats, firing pin, andlike places, where corrosion mightoccur and not be quickly noticed.Perspiration from the hands is acontributing factor to rusting be-cause it contains acids and salts.After handling, clean, wipe dry, andrestore the oil film.For care, handling, and preserva-

tion of ammunition, see paragraph64.

b. Hot, Dry Climates.(1) When operating in hot climates

where sand and dust are likely toenter the bore and mechanism, themateriel should be wiped cleanmore frequently than usual, anddisassembled to the extent that allparts can have a thorough cleaning.

(2) Oiling should be kept to a minimum,as oil will collect dust which willcause wear of the working parts.It should be applied lightly and onlyto the surfaces or working parts showing signs of wear.

(3) Rapid temperature changes causea moisture condensation film to form on unpainted metal, resultingin rust. Immediately, when thismoisture film occurs on metalparts of the weapon, wipe brisklyuntil dry and coat with (PL special)general purpose lubricating oil toprevent rusting.

c. Hot, Damp, and Salty Atmosphere.(1)

30. Lubrication Under Unusual Conditions

compensate for abnormal or extreme con-ditions, such as high or low temperatures,prolonged periods of firing, continued fir-ing in sand or dust, or exposure to mois-ture. Any one of these operations or condi-tions may cause contamination and quicklydestroy the protective properties of thelubricant.

b. Extreme Cold-Weather Lubrication.Lubricate parts with weapons lubricatingoil (LAW) when temperature is below 0°F.

c. Extreme Hot-Weather Lubrication.Special lubricants will ordinarily not berequired at extreme high temperatures,as lubricants prescribed for temperatures

above 0°F provide adequate protection.However, more frequent servicing thanspecified in table II is necessary becausethe heat tends to dissipate the lubricants.

d. Lubrication for Humid and Salt-AirConditions. High humidity, moisture orsalt air contaminate lubricants, necessi-tating more frequent service than specifiedin table II.

e. Lubrication After Operation UnderSandy or Dusty Conditions. If prolongedfiring has occurred under dusty or sandyconditions, clean and inspect all lubricatedsurfaces for fouled lubricants. Lubricateas necessary.

Section III. PREVENTIVE-MAINTENANCE SERVICES

31.a.

GeneralResponsibility and Intervals. Preven-

tive-maintenance services are the respon-sibility of the using organization. Theseconsist of before-firing, during-firing,after-firing, daily, and weekly servicesperformed by the operator (first echelon),and the scheduled services to be per-formed at the weekly, bimonthly, andsemiannual intervals by the armorer ofthe using organization (second echelon).

b. Definition of Terms. The general in-spection of each item applies also to anysupporting member or connection and isgenerally a check to see whether the itemis in good condition, correctly assembled,secure, and not worn.

The inspection for good conditionis usually an external visual in-spection to determine whether theunit is damaged beyond safe orserviceable limits. The term goodcondition is explained further bythe following: not bent or twisted,not chafed or burred, not brokenor cracked, not bare or frayed, notdented or collapsed, not torn or cut,not deteriorated.The inspection of a unit to see thatit is correctly assembled is usuallyan external visual inspection to seeif it is in its normal assembledposition in the materiel and func-

tions properly when manually op-erated.Inspection of a unit to determineif it is secure is usually an externalvisual examination or a check bywrench or hand for looseness. Suchan inspection must include anybrackets, lockwashers, locknuts,locking wire, or cotter pins used.By worn is meant worn beyondserviceable limits or to a pointlikely to result in failure if the unitis not replaced before the nextscheduled inspection.

32. Cleaning and Carea. General. Any special instructions for

cleaning and care of components are con-tained in the pertinent sections. Generalinstructions are given in b and c below.

thinner to clean or wash grease oroil from all parts of the weapon.

(3) Heavy accumulations. New mate-riel, and component parts receivedfrom storage for immediate usemay have heavy accumulations ofgrease or coatings of rust-preven-tive compound. This may be partlyby scraping with sticks or otherarticles which will not damageparts. Remove the residue withwaste, wiping cloths, or a brushsaturated with (CR) cleaning com-pound. After cleaning, rinse off anyremaining compound with coldwater. Dry and lubricate as speci-fied in paragraph 29. Apply a lightgrade of oil to all nonpainted metalsurfaces to prevent rusting.

c. General Precautions in Cleaning.(1) Dry-cleaning solvent and mineral

spirits paint thinner are flammableand should not be used near an openflame. Fire extinguishers shouldbe readily available when thesematerials are used. In addition,they evaporate quickly and have adrying effect on the skin. If usedwithout gloves, they may causecracks in the skin and, in the caseof some individuals, a mild irri-tation or inflammation. Use onlyin well-ventilated places.

(2) Avoid getting petroleum products,such as dry-cleaning solvent, min-eral spirits paint thinner, or lubri-cants on rubber parts as they willattack the rubber and destroy itscharacteristics.

(3) The use of Diesel fuel oil, gasoline,or benzene (benzol) for cleaningor the use of high-pressure wateror steam for cleaning the weaponis prohibited.

(4) Do not dilute (CR) cleaning com-pound solvent rifle bore cleaner.Do not add ant i f reeze . S torecleaners in a warm place, if prac-tical. Shake (CR) cleaning com-pound well before using.

33. Basic Preventive Maintenance The general preventive-maintenance

procedures outlined in a through e belowwill be observed in addition to those re-ferred to in table II. Special maintenanceof specific components of the materiel iscovered, when necessary, in the sectionspertaining to the components.

a. Rust, dirt, grit, gummed oil, andwater cause rapid deterioration of internalmechanism and outer unpainted surfaces.Particular care should be taken to keep allbearing surfaces clean and properly lubri-cated. Remove all traces of rust from un-painted bearing surfaces with crocus cloth,which is the coarsest abrasive to be usedb y t h e u s i n g o r g a n i z a t i o n f o r t h i spurpose.

b. Loose parts will be tightened andbroken parts replaced or repaired.

c. At least every 6 months, check if allmodifications have been applied. For a listof current modification work orders, seeDA Pam 310-4. No alteration or modifica-tion will be made except as authorized bymodification work orders.

d. Check equipment for completeness.Replace missing items and turn in for re-pair all damaged items. Use only tools thatare provided and see that they are service-able. After use, items must be thoroughlycleaned, coated with a film of oil, andstowed in their proper chests or toolrolls.

e. Inspect and service the weapon, asdescribed in paragraphs 40 through 42 atleast once every 6 months and after anyextended travel with the weapon, as thetactical situation permits.

34. Schedule of Preventive Maintenancea. Purpose. To insure mechanical effi-

ciency, it is necessary that the materielbe systematically inspected at regular in-tervals, so defects may be discovered andcorrected before they result in seriousdamage or failure. Certain scheduledmaintenance services or unsatisfactoryoperating characteristics beyond the scopeof the operators to correct must be re-ported at the earliest opportunity to thedesignated individual in authority.

35. Preventive Maintenance by Armorer of the preventive-maintenance services

a. Service by the armorer includes asystematic check to see that all operatorspreventive maintenance has been properlyperformed at the prescribed intervals andthat the materiel is in the best possibleoperating condition. The services set forthin table III are to be performed or super-vised by the armorer at the designatedintervals, in addition to any maintenancerequired as a result of the checks andservices by the operator. The frequency

prescribed is considered a minimum re-quirement for operation of materiel underusual conditions. Under unusual operatingconditions, such as extreme temperatures,mud, dust or sand, extremely moist orsalty atmosphere, or in rain or snow, itwill be necessary to perform the mainte-nance services more frequently.

CHAPTER 4

INSPECTIONS

Section I.

38. ScopeThis chapter provides specific instruc-

tions for the inspection by Ordnance main-tenance personnel of materiel in the handsof troops in the field, in Ordnance shops,and in alerted units scheduled for overseaduty. Troubleshooting information is in-corporated wherever applicable as a nor-mal phase of inspection.

39. Purpose of InspectionInspections are made for the purpose of

(1) determining the condition of an item asto serviceability, (2) recognizing condi-tions that would cause failure, (3) assuringproper application of maintenance policiesat prescribed levels, and (4) determiningthe ability of a unit to accomplish its main-tenance and supply missions.

40. Categories of InspectionIn general, three categories of inspection

are performed by Ordnance field mainte-nance personnel.

a. Inspection of Materiel in the Handsof Troops in the Field.

(1) Spot-check inspection. This is aninspection performed on a percent-age of materiel in order to ascer-tain the adequacy and effectivenessof organizational maintenance andsupply. Included within this scopeis inspection of equipment to detectincipient failures before unserv-iceability occurs; inspection to as-certain the availability and use oftechnical and supply manuals andlubrication orders; inspection todetermine the accuracy of records,authorized levels of equipment andsupplies, practice of supply econ-omy, preservation, and safekeep-ing of tools, availability of repairparts and supplies; and knowledge

of the proper procedures for req-usitioning supplies and equipmentand followup thereon.Command maintenance. Commandmaintenance inspections will beperformed at least annually. Thepurpose of the inspection is to as-certain the serviceability of equip-ment, to predict maintenance andsupply requirements, and to deter-mine the adequacy of facilities andeffectiveness of procedures. In-formation obtained during the in-spection should indicate futurerequirements for depot mainte-nance and for replacement, as wellas disclose immediate needs formaintenance and application ofmodification work orders. Duringinspection, correction of deficien-ties will be made on spot whenpractical. For additional informa-tion relative to these inspectionsand the forms to be used therewith,refer to AR 750-8.

b. Ordnance Shop Inspection.(1)

Initial inspection. This is an in-spection of materiel received inOrdnance shops for the purpose ofdetermining the degree of repairand parts requirement. This in-cludes determination of modifica-tion work orders to be applied.In-process inspection. This isperformed in the process of re-pairing the materiel, to insure thatall parts conform to the prescribedrepair standards, that the work-manship is in accordance with ap-proved methods and procedures,and that deficiencies not disclosedby the initial inspection are foundand corrected.Final inspection. This is an ac-ceptance inspection performed by

44. Preembarkation Inspections of Materielin Units Alerted far Oversea Movement

a. General. Materiel destined for over-sea movement must be inspected for serv-iceability as described in paragraph 40.Serviceable materiel will also meet thestandards set forth in TB ORD 385.

b. Spare Parts and Equipment. Whenshipped overseas the weapons must be ac-companied by a complete set of spare partsand equipment as normally issued. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

Section I. GROUND SIGNAL PROJECTOR M1A1

45. GeneraI

a. The ground signal projector (fig. 8)consists of a long tubular body, a breechassembly, and a spike. The breech assem-bly contains the moving parts of the unit.The barrel is threaded into the breech.

b. One end of the body is flared for sup-port on the ground. A spike is provided toaid in the support of the unit on soft ter-rain. The spike is threaded into the flaredportion of the body, point outward, and isthrust into the ground up to the flared por-tion of the body. When on hard ground, thespike is not used and is stored by screwingit point first into the flared portion of thebody.

c. The breech assembly houses the fir-ing mechanism. The unit is fired by pulling

down on a lanyard. The lanyard is securedto the lever assembly. One end of leverassembly is inserted through an opening inthe breech and into the striker, then se-cured with pin and cotter pin. The firingpin is threaded into the striker and thestriker is assembled into the breech; thebarrel is assembled to the breech. Pullingdown on the lanyard causes the strikerwith firing pin to move upward, thus caus-ing the firing pin to be forced through aclearance hole in the breech and into theprimer of the signal within the barrel.

d. Detonation of the pyrotechnic pro-duces propellent gases which force thestriker and firing pin back to the originalposition. When the projector is held verti-cally, the weight of the striker is sufficientto pull it down to its original position.

is a small hand-operated and hand-sup-ported projector that consists of a barrelassembly, breech assembly, latch assem-bly, and firing pin assembly (fig. 10).

b. Barrel Assembly. The barre l as-sembly is the main portion of the projector.

It contains a pin and barrel. The barrel iswelded and riveted and has a spring andejector housing located on the rear portionof the barrel. It also has a locking hookcentrally located on the barrel.

c. Breech Assembly. The breech as-sembly is located within the rear sectionof the projector. The breech assembly

53. Generala. Pyrotechnic Pistol with Pyrotechnic

Pistol Mount. The pyrotechnic pistol withpyrotechnic pistol mount consists of apistol and pistol mount (fig. 3).

b. Pyrotechnic Pistol Mount. The pyro-technic pistol mount (fig. 5) is used as aholder for the pistol. The pistol is retainedin the mount by lugs on the muzzle end ofthe barrel. The mount is provided with foursymmetrically p1aced helical springswhich absord the recoil shock. There is acushioning gasket located within the mountwhich absorbs the counterrecoil when thepistol is fired. The cover is provided foruse when the pistol is removed from themount.

c. Pyrotechnic Pistol. The pyrotechnicpistol (fig. 11) is a double-action, single-loading pistol used for projecting flaresor signaling between troops, from groundtroops to aircraft, from aircraft to air-craft, or from aircraft to ground troops.The pistol consists basically of two groups,the barrel group and the frame group.

d. Barrel Group. The barrel group (fig.12) consists of a pin, latch, lock, springs,and barrel assembly.

e. Frame Group. The frame group (fig.13) houses the firing pin, safety, springs,hammer, pawl, slide, and bearing. Whenthe trigger is depressed, the slide movesforward. The pawl is pinned to the slideand is spring loaded to keep the nose of thepawl raised. As the slide moves forward,the pawl engages and rotates the hammerrearward against the action of the spring.The projecting part of the pawl engagesthe bearing at a critical point, which actsto depress the pawl and release the ham-

c. Barrel Assembly. Assemble the ejec-tor and spring into the housing, located onthe rear section of the barrel. Snap thelink open and insert prongs through thehousing and into the ejector.

Final inspection, to insure that the mate-riel is complete and serviceable, is per-formed after the materiel has been re-paired and assemb1ed in Ordnancemaintenance shops for return to user.Final acceptance will depend largely uponthe care exercised during repair proce-dures. Therefore, it is imperative that thein-process inspections in paragraph 42b(2)be performed carefully during repair.

a. Visual. Visually inspect the materielfor missing, bent, or otherwise damagedcomponents. Determine that applicablemodification work orders (MWO’s) havebeen completed.

b. Function. Hand function (cycle) mate-riel through the normal operations, todetermine that materiel functions prop-erly.

CHAPTER 7

AMMUNIT ION

61. GeneralAmmunition for use in pyrotechnic pis-

tols and projectors is issued in the form ofcomplete rounds of fixed ammunition. Acomplete round consists of all the ammuni-tion components required to fire the pistolor projector once. The complete roundconsists of a primer, a delay element,propelling charge, and a pyrotechniccharge, all contained in a cartridge case.The term “fixed,” used in connection withammunition fired from pyrotechnic dis-chargers, signifies the propelling chargeis fixed (not adjustable) and that the roundis loaded into the discharger as a unit.

62. Classificationa. Dependent upon use or the effect pro-

duced, ammunition fired from pyrotechnicdischargers is classified as aircraft il-lamination signals, aircraft parachuteflares, and projectile air burst simulators.

b. Aircraft illumination signals (fig. 20)were originally intended for signaling fromaircraft-to-aircraft or from aircraft-to-ground. The use of ground projectors alsopermits their use by ground troops. Thesignals are manufactured to produce, uponfiring, a single colored star or two starsof the same or different colors. The doublestar signals are also available with a tracerelement of the same color as one of thestars. The colors of stars and tracers aregreen, red, and yellow. Early models ofthe signals (without “A1” suffix designa-tions) are available and are assembledinside of a paper case with a brass head;other models (with “A1’’ suffix designa-tions) are assembled inside of an allaluminum one-piece or two-piece case.Some of these signals, with brass headsand aluminum cases, may be encountered.Later models “A2” suffix designations)are of one-piece rimmed-case construe-tion with a steel closing cap.

c. The projectile airburst simulatorM27 (fig. 21) is used in training to simulate

the high burst of artillery projectiles, andproduces a smoke puff at the top of itsrise of approximately 650 feet.

d. The aircraft parachute flare M9A1(fig. 22) is intended for aerial reconnais-sance. Upon firing, the flare case is pro-jected from the pistol and, after a 2.5-second delay, ignited candle and para-chute are expelled from the case.

e. The projectile air burst simulatorM74 (fig. 20) is intended primarily forumpires, to simulate air burst of artilleryfire for training troops. Simulators ofearlier manufacture have an aluminumbody and brass base; simulators of latermanufacture have an all aluminum case.

63. Identificationa. General. Ammunition and ammuni-

tion components are completely identifiedby the painting and marking (including anammunition lot number) on the ammunitionitems and on all original packing con-tainers; refer to figures 20 through 23.

b. Model. To identify a particular de-sign, a model designation is assigned atthe time the item is classified as anadopted type. This model designation be-comes an essential part of the standardnomenclature and is included in the mark-ing on the item. The present system ofmodel designation for a standard item con-sists of the letter “M’’ followed by anArabic numeral, for example, “M9.” Mod-ifications are indicated by adding the letter“A” and the appropriate Arabic numeral.Thus, “M9A1” indicates the first modifica-tion of an item for which the original modeldesignation was “M9.” Items standardizedfor use by both Army and Navy are desig-nated by ‘‘AN” preceding the model desig-nation.

c. Ammunition Lot Number. When am-munition is manufactured, an ammunitionlot number, which becomes an essentialpart of the marking, is assigned in ac-cordance with pertinent specifications.

The lot number is stamped or marked onevery loaded complete round and on allpacking containers. It is required for allpurposes of record, including reports oncondition, functioning, or accident, inwhich ammunition may be involved. In anyone lot of ammunition, the componentsused in the assembly are manufacturedunder as nearly identical conditions aspracticable.

d. Painting. The ammunition describedherein is coated with a colorless lacquer.In addition to the lacquer, aircraft illu-mination signals have colored bands orcolored bands of letters painted aroundthe case, in colors corresponding to thestars and tracer assembled within. Toprovide a ready means of identification,the closing disk on the projectile air burstsimulator M27 is painted white.

e. Marking.(1) On the body (stenciled unless other-

wise indicated):Descriptive nomenclature includ-

ing model number.Ammunition lot number including

64. Care, Handling, and PreservationWarning: Pyrotechnics must be handled

with appropriate care at all times. Theexplosive elements in primers and expell-ing charges are particularly sensitive toundue shock and high temperature. Boxescontaining pyrotechnics should not bedropped, thrown, tumbled, or dragged.

a. Ammunition is packed to withstandconditions ordinarily encountered in thefield. Care must be observed to keep pack-ings from becoming broken or damaged.All broken packings must be repaired

immediately and careful attention given tothe transfer of all marking to the new parts.

b. Since pyrotechnics are adversely af-fected by moisture and high temperature,due consideration should be given as indi-cated in (1) and (2) below.

(1) Do not break the moisture-resist-ant seal until the pyrotechnic is tobe used.

(2) Store pyrotechnics in a dry, well-ventilated place, out of the directrays of the sun, and protectedagainst excessive or variable tem-peratures.

c. Do not attempt to disassemble thecomplete round or any of its components.

d. Before loading into the discharger,

the round should be free of sand, mud,moisture, frost, snow, ice, oil, grease,and any foreign matter.

e. Do not handle duds, as they are ex-tremely dangerous. They will not be movedor touched but will be destroyed in placein accordance with TM 9-1903.

65. Authorized RoundsThe ammunition authorized for use in the

pyrotechnic pistol AN-M8, hand pyrotech-nic projector M9, and ground signal pro-jector M1A1 is listed in table V. Standardnomenclature, which is used in the listing,completely identifies the ammunition, ex-cept for ammunition lot number.

66. Preparation for Firing prevent injury to personnel or damage to materiel.

a. Rounds should be free of foreignmatter, sand, mud, moisture, frost, snow,ice, or grease when being loaded into theweapon.

b. Rounds with cracked, dented, or de-formed cases or loose closing tops shouldnot be fired.

c. In discharging signals freehand (with-out pistol mount) from aircraft, or fromthe ground, care will be exercised to aimso that no damage results to the aircraftor friendly ground troops.

d. Overhead cover should be provided

After removal from packing materials,rounds of ammunition for the weaponsdescribed herein are ready for firing.Rounds prepared for firing but not firedwill be returned to their original condi-tion and packings and be appropriatelymarked. Such rounds will be used first insubsequent firings, in order that stocks ofopened packings may be kept to a minimum.

67. Precautions in FiringThe precautions

should be closelyin a through h b e l o wobserved, in order to

when firing. When discharging the weaponfree hand (without pistol mount), the firer'sbody should be below the level of the muzzleof the pistol or projector.

e. When firing projectile air burstsimulators over the heads of troops, theweapon should not be aimed at an ele-vation of less than 45 degrees to insuresufficient height of burst. Personnelshould not face toward the point of burstof the simulator.

f. Due to the powerful recoil, two handsshould be used when firing the aircraftparachute flare M9A1. Never fire thisflare from a grounded aircraft.

g. Misfires will be handled in accord-ante with paragraph 19 and AR 385-63.

h. Appropriate precautions should beobserved when firing in wooded or otherareas containing objects in the line of fire.In such firing, injury to the firer oradjacent personne1 may result shouldthe signa1 or flare strike a branch,overhead wires, or other object thatwould prevent its normal flight andfunction.

68. Packing and Markinga. Packing.

(1) The types and quantities of signalsand flares packed in wooden boxes,as well as pertinent data, are shownin table VI.

(2) Complete data are published in SM9-5-1370.

b. Marking. The information in (1)through (10) below is marked in black onpacking boxes of pyrotechnics (fig. 23).

CHAPTER 8DESTRUCTION OF MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE

69. Generala. Destruction of the ground signal pro-

jector MlAl, pyrotechnic pistol AN-M8,or hand pyrotechnic projector M9, whensubject to capture or abandonment in thecombat zone, will be undertaken by theusing army only when, in the judgementof the unit commander concerned, suchaction is necessary in accordance withorder of or policy established by the armycommander. When the projector or pistolis in the possession of Ordnance mainte-nance personnel or in storage, destructionwill be in accordance with FM 9-1 andapplicable portions of the information inb, c, and d below.

b. The information that follows is forguidance only. Certain of the proceduresdescribed require the use of explosivesand incendiary grenades, which normallymay not be authorized items of issue to theusing organization. The issue of these andrelated materials and the conditions underwhich destruction will be effected arecommand decisions in each case, accord-ing to the tactical situation. Of the severalmeans of destruction, those most generallyapplicable are:

Mechanical. Requires axe, pickmattock, sledge, crowbar, or sim-ilar implement.Burning. Requires gasoline, oil,incendiary grenades , or o therf l a m m a b l e s ,Demolition. 1Requires suitable ex-plosives or ammunition.Gunfire. 1Includes artillery, ma-chine guns, rifles using rifle gre-nades, and launchers using antitankrockets. Under some circum-stances, hand grenades may beused.Disposal. Requires burying in theground, dumping in the streams or

marshes, or scattering so widelyas to preclude recovery of essen-tial parts.

In general, destruction of essential parts,followed by burning will usually be suf-ficient to render the materiel useless.However, se1ection of the particularmethod of destruction requires imagina-tion and resourcefulness in the utilization of the facilities at hand under the existingconditions. Time is usually critical.

c. If destruction to prevent enemy use is resorted to, the materiel must be so badlydamaged that it cannot be restored to ausable condition in the combat zone eitherby repair or cannibalization. Adequatedestruction. requires that all parts essen-tial to the operation of the materiel, in-cluding essential spare parts, be destroyedor damaged beyond repair. However, whenlack of time and personnel prevents de-struction of all parts, priority is given tothe destruction of those parts most difficultto replace. Equally important, the sameessential parts must be destroyed on alllike materiel, so that the enemy cannotconstruct one complete unit from severaldamaged ones.

d. If destruction by demolition or gun-fire is directed, due consideration shouldbe given to the observance of appropriatesafety precautions.

70. Destruction of Ground Signal ProiectorM1A1, Pyrotechnic Pistol AN-M8, orHand Pyrotechnic Proiector M9

a. Method No. 1-by Mechanical Means.Using an axe, pick mattock, sledge, orother heavy implement, thoroughly smashthe projector or pistol. Elapsed time: about1 minute.

b. Method No. 2-by Burning. Place theprojector or pistol on a pile of combusti-ble. Pour gasoline over the combustible.

SHIPMENT AND STORAGE

71. Shipping Instructionsa. Responsibility. When shipping the

projector or pistol, the officer in chargeof preparing the shipment will be respon-sible for furnishing materiel in a service-able condition and properly processed forshipment, including the preparation ofArmy shipping documents.

b. Preparation for Shipment. Personnelwithdrawing the projector or pistol fromstorage for shipment must not removepreservatives other than to insure thatthe materiel is complete and serviceable.It is has been determined that preserva-tives are not adequate, they must be re-stored prior to shipment, as prescribedin paragraph 73.

c. Army Shipping Documents. prepareall Army shipping documents in accord-ance with AR 725-5.

Prepare DD Form 6 for all ship-ments received in a damaged orotherwise unsatisfactory condition.Projectors or pistols received forstorage and already processed fordomestic shipment must not bereprocessed, un1ess inspectionperformed on receipt of materielreveals corrosion, deterioration,etc.Completely process projector orpistol upon receipt directly frommanufacturing facilities or whenpreservatives have been renderedin effective.Projector or pistol to be preparedfor limited storage must be givena limited technical inspection andprocessed as prescribed in para-graph 73. The results of the in-spection and classification will benoted by attaching tags indicatingany deficiencies.After inspection, replace or repair

all missing or broken parts. If re-pairs are beyond the scope of theunit and materiel will will be in-activated for an appreciable lengthof time, place materiel in limitedstorage and attach tags specifyingthe repairs needed. The reports ofthese conditions will be submittedby the unit commander for actionby an ordnance maintenance unit. When materiel is inactivated, itwill be processed in accordancewith paragraph 73.

b. Inspection During Storage. Performa visual inspection periodically to de-termine general conditions of materiel.If damage or corrosion is found on anypart, repair or reprocess as prescribedin paragraph 73.

c. Storage Site. The preferred storagesite is indoors.

73. Cleaning, Preservation, Packaging,and Packing Instructions

N o t e . P r i o r t o c l e a n i n g , d i s a s s e m b l e t h e g r i p s ,b a r r e l a s s e m b l y , a n d f r a m e a s s e m b l y .

a. Cleaning. Clean all surfaces by oneof the methods indicated in (1) through (3)below, whichever is applicable or avail-able at installation. It is of utmost import-ance that all parts be spotlessly cleanedprior to application of preservatives andpackaging.

(1) Dip-tank method (metal accesso-ries only). Place metal parts in ametal perforated basket and sub-merge and agitate for approxi-mately 1 minute in a tank contain-ing dry-cleaning solvent or volatilemineral spirits. Remove and sub-merge into a second tank contain-ing clean solvent. Agitate for about1 minute and remove. Submergeinto a third tank containing a sup-pressor or fingerprint removeroil (type A) to remove all acids.Remove and dry the parts thor-oughly with dry compressed air

(provided with special moisturef i l ter t raps) , infra-red lamps,heating oven, or by wiping the partwith clean lint-free cloths.

(2) Scrubbing method. Clean all partsby scrubbing with cloths soaked inthe solvent (1) above, by wipingwith clean, solvent-soaked cloths.When the solvent-soaked clothsused for the first scrubbing oper-ation become too dirty for furtheruse, discard them and use cleansolvent-soaked cloths. Clean clothsmust be soaked with clean solventfor the final wiping operation. Ap-ply fingerprint remover oil (typeA) and dry thoroughly as pre-scribed in (1) above.

(3) Vapor degreaser method (metal ac-cessories only). Tanks containinga heated solution of trichlorethyl-ene or perchloroethylene (type II)are used mostly for degreasingitems that are very greasy, oily,and grimy and not readily cleanedby the dip-tank method (1) above.Place parts in a metal perforatedbasket and submerge just below thevapors in the tank for about 2 or 3minutes until all the oil or greasemelts and runs off items in thebasket. Remove basket and applyfingerprint remover oil (type A) toitems and dry thoroughly as pre-scribed in (1) above.

Warning: Personnel operatingvapor degreasers are cautioned notto breathe the vapor fumes.

b. Preservation. Remove fingerprintsand apply a coat of oil (PL special), gen-eral purpose lubricating oil to the metalportion of the projector and pistol.

c. Packaging.(1) Ground signal projector M1A1.

(a) Put the projector in a type 1 bar-rier material bag and securewith heat.

(b) Put bag and contents into fibercan container.

(c) Assemble top to container andseal with tape.

(2) P y r o t e c h n i c p i s t o l A N - M 8with pyrotechnic pistol mountM1.

APPENDIX II

MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION CHART

1. PurposeTo allocate specific maintenance operations to the proper echelon on the basis of time,

tools, and skills normally available to various echelons in combat situation and influencedby maintenance policy and sound maintenance practices as authorized in AR 750-6.

2. Explanation of ColumnsThe maintenance allocation chart designates overall responsibility for the maintenance

function on end item or assembly. Repair and/or overhaul of major assemblies is desig-nated by authority of the Army Commander representative, except for the specific repairsubfunctions listed in the maintenance allocation charts. Deviation from maintenanceoperations allocated in the maintenance allocation chart is authorized only upon approvalof the Army commander representative,

SERVICE To clean, to preserve, and to re-plenish lubricants.

INSPECT To verify serviceability and todetect incipient electrical or

mechanical failure by scrutiny.REPLACE To substitute serviceable as-

semblies, subassemblies, andparts for unserviceable com-ponents.

REPAIR To restore to a serviceable con-dition by replacing unservice-able parts, or by any other actionrequired utilizing tools, equip-ment and skills available, toinclude welding, grinding,riveting, straightening, adjust-ing, etc.

OVERHAUL To restore to a condition compa-

rable to new by disassemblingthe item to determine the con-dition of each of its componentparts and reassembling it usingserviceable, rebuilt, or new as-semblies, subassemblies, andparts.

SYMBOL “X” The symbol “X” placed in theappropriate column indicatesthe echelon responsible forperforming that particular main-tenance operation, but does notnecessarily indicate that repairwill be stocked at that level.Echelons higher than the ech-elon marked by “X’’ are au-thorized to perform the indi-cated operation.

BASIC ISSUE ITEMS LIST

Section I.

1. General

This appendix is a list of the basic issueitems that are required for stockage byfirst echelon. It includes accessories, at-tachments, and component assemblies withquantities thereof, which constitute themajor end item of equipment; and the firstechelon accessories, tools, supplies, spareassemblies, and repair parts accompany-ing the equipment, all of which constitutethe major end item for issue to users.

2. Explanation and Definitionsa. Source, Maintenance, and Recover-

ability Code. This column lists a code thatindicates the selection status and sourceof supply of the repair part or item, thelowest echelon capable of installing therepair part, and the recoverability aspectsof the repair part. An example of this codeis P, O, R. The P indicates that the itemis a mission stockage list repair part thatis procured and stocked on a nationalprogram basis, the O indicates that therepair part is authorized to first and sec-ond echelons, and the R indicates that therepair part is an expendable, recoverableitem. When repair parts supply respon-sibility has been assigned to a technicalservice other than Ordnance, the basicnumber of the supplying technical serviceis listed in the first position of the sourcecode, for example, 11 for a Signal Corpsitem. Refer to paragraph 3 for an explana-tion of all codes appearing in this manual.

b. Federal Stock Number. This columnlists the Federal stock number which hasbeen assigned by the Cataloging Division,Defense Logistics Services Center.

c. Description. This column lists theFederal item name (shown in capital let-ters) and any additional description re-quired for supply operations. The ab-

breviation w/e (with equipment) when usedas a portion of the nomenclature indicatesthat the major item or major combinationincludes all armament, equipment, acces-sories, and repair parts issued with theitem. The technical service number is alsoincluded for reference.

d. Unit of Issue. This column lists theminimum quantity that will be supplied.Where the unit of issue is shown as ft, in,etc., such as for bulk materials, the requi-sition should indicate the exact amountthat is required.

e. Quantity Authorized. This columnlists the quantity of the listed item author-ized for stockage by first echelon.

f. Illustration. This column indicatesthe figure number of the illustration thatdepicts the item.

3. Explanation of Codesa. Technical Service Number. I t ems

not coded in this column are considered(9) Ordnance items.

Code Explanation12 Adjutant Generalb. Recoverability. When no code is in-

dicated in column 1(d), the item is expend-able and not recoverable.Code Explanation

R Indicates a repair part or assemblythat is expendable and recoverableand is economically repairableand, when available, is furnishedby supply on an exchange basis.

4. Suggestions and RecommendationsNotice of discrepancies and recommen-

dations for additions and deletions of repairparts and special tools should be forwardedon DA Form 2028 direct to CommandingGeneral, Headquarters, US Army WeaponsCommand, Rock Island Arsenal, RockIsland, Illinois, ATTN: AMSWE-SMM.
