Europe – Where it all started All sardines originally came from Europe They were the epitome of European quality Sardines were gourmet, expensive and delicious Then things changed Mass production gave way Sardines were imported from polluted waterways Imitation sardines like brislings and sprats entered the market Quality went down, taste declined with it People started associating sardines with bad taste Thank goodness for BELA works hard to change people's perceptions of sardines BELA She swims freely and is sustainably wild caught in non-industrialized European waters She revived the age old art of canning and preserving fresh fish is fresh, premium quality, super healthy and delicious BELA BELA swims freely in European waterways She knows no borders and speaks many languages She’s a vegetarian and a building block of our oceans She is wild caught by net – the purse seine Local fishermen bring her to market in a basket BELA is carefully washed and cleaned by hand And then cooked - one of the only sardines that are cooked prior to canning She is packed by hand in Portugal within hours of the catch and is never frozen (who likes being frozen!?) Once she is safely nestled in her can, she is bathed in organic, culinary oils or sauces - all sourced locally. Only the best for ! BELA Once she is cooked twice and bathed in oils, she takes her longest trip – 7 days on an ocean liner towards America and our local markets BELA works hard!
