LIBERTY BELL

THE LIBERTYBELL

1776,to call the citizens ofPhiladelphia together

to hear theDeclaration of

Independence readout loud

In 1751, thePennsylvania

Colony’s Assemblydeclared a

“Year of Jubilee”and commissioned

the bellto be put in the

Philadelphia StateHouse.

Inscribed on theLiberty Bell is

“PROCLAIM LIBERTYTHROUGHOUT THE

LANDUNTO ALL THEINHABITANTS

‘Grounds for APPEAL’MANOR I

facing north or south, with shaded patios, grills

and outdoor seating areas!

Let Freedom SingThis Fourth of July, celebrate

both our nation’s history andthe history of some favoritepatriotic songs:

“America” (“My Country ’Tis ofThee”). This song’s lyrics, set to themelody of “God Save the King,”were written by the Rev. SamuelFrancis Smith, who debuted it atan Independence Day celebrationin 1831. It was used as thecountry’s anthem for decadesuntil “The Star-Spangled Banner”was officially given that honorin 1931.

“America the Beautiful.”According to Katharine Lee Bates,an English professor who wrotethe words of this stirring tune in1913, the lyrics were inspired bya prairie wagon ride she took upPikes Peak in Colorado, where shegazed upon the breathtakingbeauty of the countryside below. The music was composed in 1882by Samuel Augustus Ward.

“Yankee Doodle.” This upbeatditty dates back to pre-Revolutionary War times, whenBritish officers sang it to mockAmerican militiamen. But in trueAmerican style, this parody hasbeen embraced as a patrioticclassic and also influenced theworks of George M. Cohan andJohn Philip Sousa.

Mr. Wilson at VolunteerLuncheon 2013

“THANK YOU, Mr. Wilson, for Being Such aGOOD TEACHER!”

(November 2003 - May 2016)While memorials are rare in this newsletter, so was our

first Leader Dog who moved into our lives withhis person, Lillian Hosmer, back in June of ’08.

He patiently endured as we violated everynon-petting/non-addressing rule when they walked by,

and, oh!, how he loved play dates with adoring fanswhen his ‘business suit’ (harness) could be removed! His visiting friends as a Therapy Dog Volunteer in our

Health Center made even more lives happier.

July 2016A Prayer for Veterans

Proud of our nation, they answered her call -Defending the freedom and safety of all.

On land or on sea, or in jets high above,They went out of duty and honor and love.

But however they served, Lord, wherever they went,Please bless them and help them to know what it meant.

And help us to thank them this ‘Liberty Day’ -For we owe them far more than we ever could say.
